Shot this back in November, 2004, when the grass was much greener, and there was water in the dam. There’s only been water in that dam one other time since then, and it lasted around 6 weeks….this is a nice reminder of what we used to have…. Sold this a number of times pre-redbubble, mostly A3 size, and it won me a $1500 prize from the Brisbane City Council, as well the John Herbert medal at APSCON 2005, and also a number of other smaller prizes. This was sold december 2008 on redbubble as a matted print. A small English village, Hanley Swan in Worcestershire. It boasts a duckpond with a nesting platform. I was camping near there last summer and took a walk to this village. To my pleasant surprise I found this Heron, he was looking rather pleased with himself and in no mood to take flight …......... Copyright 2008 Richie Dean PhotoArtMaster and Adobe Photoshop

  • In Quiet Light
    by Foxfires

    US$3.99–US$91.20

In quiet light, a golden glow / lasting a hundred perfect heartbeats… Artist’s notes: I have had the wonderful chance of seeing herons actually sunning themselves like this. In fact, there was one day that absolutely struck me with awe about the playfullness of these birds. I was working with a sheetrock crew, and the house we were at was on the banks of the Columbia river. We’d had a series of strange weather incidents in the valley, all of which flooded the river, and actually made a huge mess of it with countless trees/logs, branches, etc. being swept down the mountains and into the water. So for a couple of days, there was an endless log jam floating down the river. I was taking a break at the house during one of those days, and noticed herons standing on the logs floating down the river. They had their wings held out like in my picture above, and they were facing the sun. They would float down just so far, then turn and fly back up river. Next thing you know…here they’d come again… on a new log. All day long these herons kept repeating that cycle, catching rides on the logs while they could…and sunning themselves in the process. I thought that was so interesting and cool. Plus, I love herons anyway…so, it just seemed fitting to add one to this piece. :) (Original, 11×17 300dpi) / FULL VIEW RECOMMENDED* —-—- Stock Credits: model: mjranum-stock http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/art/Little-Black-Goth-5-59785430 / Boat and water: sxc.hu http://www.sxc.hu/photo/937674 / wing brushes: faeth-design http://faeth-design.deviantart.com/art/Wing-Brush-74055731 / textures: my own ©2007-2008 Aimee Stewart, Foxfires / My artwork and photos do not belong to the public domain

  • The Great Blue Heron sits almost motionless, despite the raging falls. Almost unseen. Waiting. I sit waiting too, watching … these grand creatures of water and wind. Moments, hours pass. Mist from the falls graces my face. Great Blue fishes; I sit in awe and wonder from the old wooden footbridge. Flight, almost flight, colors dance against the backdrop of the water. Heron Dance. • Pride
    by David Friederich

    US$4.48–US$102.60

Featured in You’re Accepted and All Countries~Wetlands, Ponds, Lakes, and Rivers I captured this image of a male great blue heron on the shores of Vancouver Island near Campbell River in Canada. I thought the bird showed his beauty and pride in the photo. Wikipedia says, “The largest North American heron, with a head-to-tail length of 91–140 cm (36-55 in), a wingspan of 167-201 cm (66-79 in), and a weight of 2–3.6 kg (4.4-8 lbs), it is blue-gray overall, with black flight feathers, red-brown thighs, and a paired red-brown and black stripe up the flanks; the neck is rusty-gray, with black and white streaking down the front; the head is paler, with a nearly white face, and a pair of black plumes running from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like; it also has plumes on the lower back at the start of the breeding season. The bill is dull yellowish, becoming orange briefly at the start of the breeding season, and the lower legs gray, also becoming orangey at the start of the breeding season. Immature birds are duller in color, with a dull blackish-gray crown, and the flank pattern only weakly defined; they have no plumes, and the bill is dull gray-yellow.” Nikon D300, Nikkor 600 mm f4 lens with 1.4 teleconverter, ISO 400, f11, 1/800s.

  • Too quickly, the Great Blue Herons will begin their migration. Perhaps this particular juvenile will return and grace us with its presence next summer. My heart and soul rejoices with the breathtaking return of these birds each year. Autumn migration has begun … we are beginning to see other feathered friends on their long, arduous, journeys south. Photo taken on the North Branch of the Winooski River, Montpelier VT. September 16, 2008.

  • Heron
    by Tim Yuan

    US$3.99–US$91.20

  • Mother and child Great Blue Heron as night falls . . . I thought of the song, “Help me make it through the night” while I worked on this piece. I’d be remiss if I didn’t give my husband Tommy credit for this photo. He saw the mother and child as he was driving in St. Mary Parish. He pointed them out to me, turned the vehicle around, and positioned the truck so I could get this shot. Without his keen eyes, I would have missed this endearing scene. Thank you, Tommy; I couldn’t do it without you!

A great blue heron flies so close to the surface of a lagoon in Oregon that its wingtip nearly touches the reflection in the water. Late afternoon autumn light helped with the image.

  • Nankeen Night Heron II
    by Tom Newman

    US$4.66–US$106.40

Nankeen Night Heron taken at Melbourne Zoo Australia. / The Nankeen Night Heron, Nycticorax caledonicus, also commonly referred to as the Rufous Night Heron, and in Melanesia as Melabaob, is a medium-sized heron. It is found throughout much of Australia except the arid inland, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Melanesia. The Nankeen Night Heron stands about 60cm tall. It is not strictly nocturnal. It often feeds during the day, especially during wet weather. The bird is dependent on a diet of small fish, reptiles, insects and sometimes eggs. It can be seen around freshwater rivers, lakes, bulrushes, estuaries, harbours and in residential fishponds for goldfish. The species breeds in the period from September to April, building a nest platform out of sticks. It nests communally, near water. Two to five light green eggs are laid, with a 22-day incubation followed by a 42-49 day fledging period. / Widespread throughout its large range, the Nankeen Night Heron is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
