A mature Little Blue Heron twist his head as if he is waiting for a reply from someone. Since he’s dressed to kill in full plumage, it’s no guess he’s in the mating mood…LOL

Snowy Egrets (Egretta thula). Photographed at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Titusville, Florida. A threatened species, the Snowy Egret is a medium-sized, white heron with a slender, black bill, black legs and yellow feet. The area of the upper bill, in front of the eyes, is yellow but turns red during the breeding season. Showy, recurved plumes are present on the back during the breeding season. The snowy egret is much smaller than the great egret. This species was among the most sought-after of all herons and egrets for its delicate, recurved back plumes, used to adorn women’s hats. In 1886, plumes were valued at an astounding $32 per ounce, twice the contemporary price of gold. Plundering for plumes began about 1880, peaked in 1903, and continued until 1910, when outraged citizens forced the passage of laws that reduced the slaughter. Herons that utilize pursuit or chase behaviors, like the Snowy Egret, are more specialized and selective than searchers. These behaviors are energetically expensive requiring Snowy Egrets to spend proportionately more time feeding than other species. Thus, they may be particularly sensitive to environmental influences which impact prey density and availability. Sources: / The Birds of North America Online / USGS.gov More Photography: /

In mystical symbolism, the heron, stork and crane represent much the same things – they are all solar and water birds that are said to be able to predict the weather. They represent vigilance and are valuable as destroyers of reptiles. / In Greece, the heron was sacred to Athene and Aphrodite, carrying their messages to humans. In both China and Japan, the white heron is teamed with the black crow to symbolize solar-lunar powers. Ancient Egyptians associated the heron with the rising Sun and the return of the resurrected god Osiris. It signified regeneration of life. In the Celtic cultures the heron symbolized both the Sun and the underworld and was connected to solar healing deities, but was also a messenger of death for Pwyll, king of the underworld. / Magical attributes of heron are the ability to watch patiently for results. The dignity of movement and methodical procedure in matters. Gaining dignity and self-confidence for facing personal problems. / “From the stately heron I learn dignity, / Patience to wait for proper timing. / By example, I see the sense of methodic planning. / One step at a time, personal problems are solved.” DJ Conway / The great blue heron is considered the king of the marsh and reflects an innate wisdom of being able to maneuver through life and control life circumstances. This shot was taken after he scared away the Bald Eagle, apparently moving in on his fishing territory along the banks of our Naches river. Great Blue Heron thinking of you Pamela ;)
Two of the 21 Great Blue Herons we watched for days at Lake Estes. Wow….it was pretty amazing to see so many of them hanging out in the trees and on the shore….their coloring is so unique….blue….or grey….or somewhere in-between…. Gray or Blue
