Green Heron falling easy prey to the Sigma 50-500mm, after he landed literally 10 yards away from me. Got images of him catching three fish and a dragonfly. I have been stalking this guy for over a year now, finally got a few keepers. Taken with Nikon D300 and Sigma 50-500mm.

Lake Martin, at Cypress Island, Louisiana, is a refuge for many water birds, including the great white egret and the great blue heron pictured here, along with moss-draped cypress trees from which the place gets its name.

The pastel colors of the sunlit background was the main focus in this painting. The cast of the sun rendered a pale hue to everything. Even the mood of the heron seemed affected. The original is painted in water mixable oils on 16”x20” hardboard.

A large white heron, the Great Egret is found across much of the world, from southern Canada southward to Argentina, and in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It’s the largest egret in the Old World, and thus has garnered the name Great White Egret. In the New World, however, the white form of the Great Blue Heron is larger. In the United States, the Great Egret used to be called the American Egret but that was hardly appropriate, since its range extends beyond the Americas and indeed farther than other herons.
