Shot this back in November, 2004, when the grass was much greener, and there was water in the dam. There’s only been water in that dam one other time since then, and it lasted around 6 weeks….this is a nice reminder of what we used to have…. Sold this a number of times pre-redbubble, mostly A3 size, and it won me a $1500 prize from the Brisbane City Council, as well the John Herbert medal at APSCON 2005, and also a number of other smaller prizes. This was sold december 2008 on redbubble as a matted print. My backyard pond, frozen solid. This pond is home to nutria, beavers, ducks, herons, and other water loving birds.
Kept waiting for this guy to float by so I could catch him, and he did right in front of me. It was a long wait though, but I think it was worth it. Hope you like! In quiet light, a golden glow / lasting a hundred perfect heartbeats… Artist’s notes: I have had the wonderful chance of seeing herons actually sunning themselves like this. In fact, there was one day that absolutely struck me with awe about the playfullness of these birds. I was working with a sheetrock crew, and the house we were at was on the banks of the Columbia river. We’d had a series of strange weather incidents in the valley, all of which flooded the river, and actually made a huge mess of it with countless trees/logs, branches, etc. being swept down the mountains and into the water. So for a couple of days, there was an endless log jam floating down the river. I was taking a break at the house during one of those days, and noticed herons standing on the logs floating down the river. They had their wings held out like in my picture above, and they were facing the sun. They would float down just so far, then turn and fly back up river. Next thing you know…here they’d come again… on a new log. All day long these herons kept repeating that cycle, catching rides on the logs while they could…and sunning themselves in the process. I thought that was so interesting and cool. Plus, I love herons anyway…so, it just seemed fitting to add one to this piece. :) (Original, 11×17 300dpi) / FULL VIEW RECOMMENDED* —-—- Stock Credits: model: mjranum-stock http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/art/Little-Black-Goth-5-59785430 / Boat and water: sxc.hu http://www.sxc.hu/photo/937674 / wing brushes: faeth-design http://faeth-design.deviantart.com/art/Wing-Brush-74055731 / textures: my own ©2007-2008 Aimee Stewart, Foxfires / My artwork and photos do not belong to the public domain
The Great Blue Heron sits almost motionless, despite the raging falls. Almost unseen. Waiting. I sit waiting too, watching … these grand creatures of water and wind. Moments, hours pass. Mist from the falls graces my face. Great Blue fishes; I sit in awe and wonder from the old wooden footbridge. Flight, almost flight, colors dance against the backdrop of the water. Heron Dance. Image altered post processing, giving piece an oil painting effect. Below is the real, actual photo, prior to post processing and reduced to fit: /
The Great Blue was wading in still waters before taking flight under the footbridge where I was standing, then landed in the water, climbed on this rock. Please look at the size of the wet Heron Print on the rock! Outstanding! Photo taken Montpelier VT, Summer 2008
Too quickly, the Great Blue Herons will begin their migration. Perhaps this particular juvenile will return and grace us with its presence next summer. My heart and soul rejoices with the breathtaking return of these birds each year. Autumn migration has begun … we are beginning to see other feathered friends on their long, arduous, journeys south. Photo taken on the North Branch of the Winooski River, Montpelier VT. September 16, 2008.
I truly doubt the negotiations went all that well….unfortunately for the fish.

The water is a mix of salt and fresh water, creating a very interesting environment for Great Blue Herons. I watched this bird for some time, as it fed on very small fish. I loved the bird against the marsh grasses when it decided to move on. The reflection in the tidal pool was definitely a bonus. The image was captured at Campbell River on Vancouver Island, Canada, using a Nikon D700, Nikkor 600 mm lens and 1.4 teleconverter on a Gitzo monopod.
Inspired by my time spent down at the cove near my home; a place where it’s calm and peaceful and I am inspired with each visit.
