  • Mark, an American soldier, gave his life for his fellow countrymen in the war in Iraq. The only one of his unit to survive the initial blast, he battled for life as he was flown back to the United States for medical care. His family flocked to his side and surrounded him with love in his final hours. Not long after his arrival in America, he died on home soil in the arms of his loved ones. His mother Kim, my husband’s first cousin, wrote this poem, “Is it you?” as she struggled with grief and loneliness for her young son. She asked me if I had a dragonfly photo to accompany her poem which relates the tale of the dragonflies that seem to hover near her in a show of consolation. This image is our collaboration, our joint effort, in memory of Mark Graham who defended the cause of freedom with steadfast determination and a valiant heart. May he rest in peace and may the angels surround him and his family now and forever. (100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation; see another image, “Is it you?” in this portfolio if you’d like a green dragonfly. It will print better in the card size). Taken from the Mark W. Graham Foundation website, here is additional information about the foundation to which all funds from the sales of these images will be donated: “The Mark W. Graham Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides support for young people of character and military families in crisis. It honors the legacy of Mark Graham, a fallen soldier whose strength of character and gift of service to his country are an inspiration to all who knew him. Mark was a Lafayette, La., native and his death opened the community’s eyes to the reality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make in their fight to keep our country free. He was married to Stephanie for a little more than a year when he died. Mark was 22 years old.”

I would like to express my deepest thanks to all the heroic people who work to restore power after a storm. I took this shot of men from Entergy who were working in blinding rain after Gustav hit Louisiana to help us get some normalcy back into our lives. They are unsung heroes who do their work under the most strenuous conditions, sometimes under cover of dark and sometimes far away from the comfort of their homes. This particular crew was 300 miles away from their home; God bless them all. Miraculously, we have power again, only two days after the storm hit! That’s a record! We usually have to wait at least a week. Air conditioning never felt so good as it does tonight! Thank you, Entergy! You’re the best! I would like to submit this photo to the group “Angel Wings and Poems” because these men are truly angels in service to mankind!

  • John Wayne Syndrome
    by H M Bascom

    US$6.65–US$152.00

In all of John Wayne’s (born Marion Robert Morrison) films there are three kinds of people: the hero (played by Wayne); the bad guys (that Wayne must kill); and the victim (which Wayne must save). There are only two options in situations like this: (1) surrender or (2) fight. Surrender was never an option for John Wayne’s character. It is a very simplistic view of the world which until recently served as the model for American foreign policy. His entire work can be described as the glorification of the American hero and the perpetuation of American ideals. . . . In his best roles he epitomized the national virtues of rugged individualism and that pioneer heritage that right and justice must always triumph over evil. • You light up my life!
    by Bonnie T. Barry

    US$4.99–US$114.00

This card was created in tribute to the heroic men and women who work for power utility companies. They go out into the most horrendous weather to restore power to homes and to help people get their lives back to normal after natural disasters. This young man was cutting through a huge tree that fell over power lines. He was standing on a slippery slope under the branches with a chain saw trying to disentangle the mess when the giant pinchers that were holding a big portion of the tree in a tight grip over his head loosened and almost dropped the tree right onto him. Shouts and waving from his coworkers got his attention; he scurried out and the pinchers were readjusted tightly around the branch overhead before he resumed the cutting. It was a scary thing for me to witness but something I’m sure these people are accustomed to experiencing. I entitled this card “You light up my life” because these men do that literally—restore light to homes darkened by the storms that blow through with regularity everywhere.

  • This statue of Alfred the Great, the only English king accorded the honour of that title, was commissioned from the eminent Victorian sculptor Sir (William) Hamo Thornycroft to mark the 1000th anniversary of Alfred’s death. It stands looking West up the present-day High Street in Winchester, Alfred’s capital in his kingdom of Wessex. Thornycroft (1850 – 1925) was a leading member of the so-called New School of sculpture in late Victorian England and was consequently a great inspiration to other sculptors and artists of his day. His heroic statues are held in high regard. Major public works include the Gladstone Monument next to St Clement Danes in London’s Strand, Oliver Cromwell in front of the Houses of Parliament and General Gordon in the Victoria Embankment Gardens.
