  • This is actually two photos. I had to hold the camera to shoot each hand. Joined them together in photoshop where I also messed with the image to bring out some tones, deepen the blacks etc. I had just seen an exhibition of Bill Henson’s and was basically trying to copy the luminous style he manages to achieve with analogue methods.

Bill Henson is an artist that uses photography as his medium.

Bill Henson’s artwork is beautiful. / The artwork I have seen of his perfectly conveys the delicacy, fragility and beauty of human life. I don’t have the words to describe how horrified I am that our society could construe his work as anything close to pornography. My chest constricts and I feel like crying when ever I think that my neighbours abhor such beauty. My sadness is for their loss, nothing more. We all see art in a context, the context of our own lives. / It is the viewer who sexualises these works, not the artist. If it is truly the case that the majority of us cannot look at a photo of a child’s body without sexualising it, that speaks volumes about the majority, not the artist. It also speaks very poignantly to the depth of society’s fear and sense of vulnerability toward those who would take advantage of our children. Those of us, the public, who have read and bought into the media hype, need to take a long cold shower and get over themselves. This whole affair truly, a very very sad reflection on our society. A link to The Australian’s gallery of supposedly “offending images”.... I’m glad they included the Landscape at the end… idiots. / http://media.theaustralian.com.au/multimedia/2008/05/23-henson/index.html

  • Pedophilia – Or Pedophilia Phobia?
    by hotbeetees

Freedom of artistic expression is vital to any society that calls itself democratic – except, I’d argue, where that freedom erodes democr…

The Bill Henson exhibition raid and pending obscenity charges present potentially far more danger to our society than pedophilia. Is there more to the agenda of our guardians of public morality than meets the eye? First published yesterday in my blog, The Boomtown Rap

  • Bill Henson’s photographs are currently in question. Here is an aesthetically anesthetized version ;)

  • The lure of the Abject

Bill Henson has stumbled into a fairly precarious position. The Australian Prime Minister describes the work as “revolting”

  • I got sick of people going on and on about Bill Henson’s work being pornography rather than art, so today I decided to put my money where my mouth is and support the man behind the art. Might do a few variations, dunno yet. Think of it as a test run, never done a t-shirt before so it could be extremely crappy haha! ;)

  • Halloween Costume I made for 2008. / I could have done a better job if I didn’t wait until the night before Halloween to make it. It came out pretty well anyway though, except I had to use red for his hair instead of orange because I could not find an orange feather boa or fun fur.

Sharon’s a good supportive friend of mine and has always offered me honest and thoughtful comments on my work! / Tonight I saw a photo of hers called Resting in Peace. / I really loved the simple comfort of the shot and a poem came to mind. / A poem I thought of many times as I walked between the gravestones not able to read their names of the deceased. / Check out her great photography and other works here:!Sharonahenson / ! “Who’s lying here” / “These stone with names too old to see and bones that lie below. / I wonder who that is that lies in the earth so cold. / Was he loved as a man who’s heart was full of love? / And did his family come an cry as they sighed his name. / I wonder who is lying there and was he ever loved. / Or was he buried without a soul to come and sing their praise. / What pity did he get from those that came to say good bye. / Or did they simply say thank God he’s no longer alive. / I look down at this grave so old and say who ever you are, I hope that your in heaven now and found a place with love.”

  • I was walking Molly yesterday after we had lunch in a cafe that / allows dogs to join their owners for very tasty food. Molly / usually orders chicken tenders (thin strips of fried chicken) / before we share vanilla frozen yogurt while chatting with / the other canines with a sophisticated palate. When I am / in a rush, I stop at Kentucky Fried Chicken for chicken / nuggets and a bisquit that she adores. We usually / park under a tree to eat our food. After lunch, we often / take a walk, but today was different. In one of the / alleys, we heard strange sounds coming from a beautiful / wooden trunk shown in this photograph. / Next to it was a note written in red ink / with large letters that read, “HELP!” “I am trapped / inside this wooden case. I am a good goblin / and do no harm. I make pretty pictures and write / loverly words. Please come to Froud’s ground floor / poop cupboard (what is a poop cupboard?) and when / you unlock this door, I will give you many socks / and a small dog with cheese on him.” He signed / the note, Gargle. Knowing that Goblins can be / nasty characters involved in pranks and thievery / I was hesitant to open this wooden door. When I / started to walk away, I heard the most alarming / wails that startled Molly and me. Goblins are / known to be rude, crass, bold and / they rejoice in causing chaos, spreading stains / and foul odors and causing mischief / every chance they get. Obviously there / is a reason why the goblin Gargle is locked / inside this case so I decided to investigate the / situation before creating a calamity. I plan to / travel to London to discuss with Froud what I fear / could be an infestation of goblins in Los Angeles / and possibly other cities where people are / not aware of the brilliance of Brian Froud / and the goblins he creates. I certainly did / not want Molly and me to be trapped in a / Goblin Realm that are found in damp and / dark corners where light never falls: under the / stairs, behind the refrigerator, or on the far / side of the curio cabinet under the Statue / of Elvis made from real sea-shells that / your aunt bought you from Boca Rattan. / Goblins are known to be the cleverest denizens of Faery / ever to cast havoc upon our world. For thousands of / years humans have been the victims of their / appalling tricks and annoyances, If you have not read any of Brian Froud’s books, I strongly / suggest you do a search on amazon or / any bookseller who carries his delightful books including / his pop-up books for young children. He is one of my / favorite authors of imaginative literature for children / of all ages. Froud is an English fantasy illustrator who lives / and works with his wife, Wendy Froud who is also / a fantasy artist. His work has been used as the / inspiration for creatures in films such as the / Dark Crystal and the Labyrinth starring David Bowie in / conjunction with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. He has also / worked with the American Writer Arie Berk on more / recent books, including Goblins and “The Runes / of Elfland”, and produced art books such / as Good Faeries/Bad Faeries. One of his / famous art books is simply titled Fairies. / Please view this in the large format.
