If you haven’t already noticed, I am completely and utterly useless with photo editing and manipulation. I take photos, I don’t make them. BUT… I am starting to think it could be a bit of fun to mess around with some of my shots. So I googled Photoshop only to find out that it costs a hell of a lot of money and considering I might play with it once and decide it’s not for me, I don’t think that idea is going to work. I don’t really know what I’m asking here? Can anyone suggest a more budget concious way of finding out if I’m into the whole photomanipulation thing? Should I take a class? Or is there a free trial of something I can download? Or something else? Bear in mind I am the most extreme kind of amature with this kind of thing. I clap my hands if I successfully crop something! Your advice? P.S. I’m a goody two-shoes and don’t go in for pirated software.

Does anyone know if there is a special formula for that perfect photo? Does a blue sky + river + reflections = a perfect photo, or is it the person holding the camera. I have seen loads of wonderful photos on this site, they all seem to have different content but are superb in their own right. I suppose I have just answered my own question in that last sentence. I have tried to copy some of these compositions but never quite manage it, that reflection in the water is never quite sharp enough or that sky is not quite the right shade of blue or the correct intensity. Anyway I suppose i will just have to carry on trying, and not get to despondent when I look at all the perfect photo’s

I’ve been looking around on redbubble and I’m starting to think I might have become obsessed with the site, I love to see what everyone else produces and I was blown away with a lot of the photos of different places in Australia… all of you are making me want to go there just so I can have wonderful images like yours. The amazing colors in all of your shots astound me! The reason I am writing a blog now is because I wanted to know what other people think as to what makes a good photograph? What are certain things that pull you in to the photo? What attracted you in the first place… What do you like most about black and whites? and what are somethings that you would like to see more of? I have this aching feeling of wanting to go out and shoot something… I guess I’ve just become inspired by all of you! (This site really is wonderful!) Any suggestions to help a fellow photographer to improve are more than welcomed and appreciated. Thank you!

I have wanted to own or run a gallery for some time now mainly to display and sell local artist’s work, but because of the economics of my home town, the fierce competition of the larger cities around me, and the fact that I am a poor photography student with a family and no money, It has never been practical. / The other day I was walking through Wal-Mart (American retail super-center run by under paid needy workers) and I noticed they had new lcd monitors set up at the end of the isles for POS (Point of Sale) demonstrations. These POS screens also had speakers which I had not seen before in a POS. / What I saw in my head was this; A gallery that caters to the artist and the customer by offering an experience I know I have never had at a gallery: You walk in to the gallery and it looks much like a normal gallery, 10 or so 19 inch digital picture frames, each with sound so that the artist can display their work with their interpretation in their voice, or their choice of music, poem, noise, etc. (some of these I know you would be dealing with copyrights). / Depending on technology you might also be able to place your order for what ever size print you like right there at the frame. Preferably printing would be done in house so that the artist could see that the prints are what they need to be, but that would only be if there was enough demand to pay for it. I think that artist control of finished product is a must if this idea is going to work. In a conventional gallery the artist brings the finished piece into the gallery, so there is nothing that can really go wrong. With my idea the artist is letting a third party print their work, and I would want it to be exactly how they want it. / Please let me know what you think of this idea. If you don’t like it, please tell me why or what you would change. If you do like it, please tell me why and what you would change. Thank you for your time and comments, Shaun

Hey there, fellow RedBubblians… Once again I am browsing through hundreds of folios, numerous pictures, wonderful writings and great art… And over and over again I am thinking “How did they do that?” ... “What did they do to their cameras/pencils/papers/pens/canvas/lights/computers/add-form-of-art-here to get this effect?” ... “What the heck can I do to my own art to get better?” I love all your kind words on my photos, and pictures. In my very own portfolio, those are my best ones. Compared to your works I have seen, they are crap… I want to get better. I want to learn about lighting, ISO, Shutterspeeds, DOFs, etc. I want to know, what I can do with my pictures, in my situations when I shot them, to improve the effects, to get the pictures clearer, to just make them more beautiful and more on par with what I WANT them to be. / I can’t manage on my own. In thus, this is a plea to all RedBubblians out there, who can give advice and critique. When my pictures are really bad, tell me – but also tell me what I can do to make them better, so I can improve my works in themselves. / I do know, that some pictures, the quality itself is bad – the negative scans only are 72dpi on those that I shot with film. I couldn’t get bigger ones (the lab said, I don’t need bigger ones – I said I do, they said they won’t do it, since I am not a professional grinds teeth). I have a handful on there now, that I shot with a digicam as well. A friend of mine bought a new camera and gave me his Canon D10 to play around with. Good thing is, that all my Canon lenses fit on that one as well. / I won’t give up on film! I do like the excitement to wait for the results too much. But I also realize, in order to improve my film works, I need to improve my understanding. And with the trial and error, it is just cheaper using Digital (I spent a FORTUNE just for developing lately and the successrate to get nice pictures was horrible). But that’s just rambling. To get back to the point: Feel free to tear my pictures apart, tell me, what to do, what to change, how to snap, to snap better. Play Nice – Advice :c) Thanks all for reading and thanks even more for maybe even reacting. Best wishes from Vienna, Giovanna

Hi! I have recently taken some awesome shots of guys doing extreme things on bikes. (My husband is a BMX rider and trainer) I have looked around the web and being in the BMX scene have seen a few mags and shots that other photographers have taken and my shots seem to be just as good. I was wondering whether anyone had some tips as to how to go about selling my images to magazines/organisations for use? I am very new at all this so would welcome any advice. Thanks.

I just wanted to share some really cool brush resources for those of you interested in adding some plugins to your Photoshop software. I have used some of them and they rock! All are freeware and some cite that you must give a link back to them in order to use them. The following is a comprehensive list of ALL of the websites where I have downloaded brushes from. Any of my pieces that feature a brush from one of these sets will be linked back to this journal for proper crediting. Brush gurus: 50ml Brushes Seishido Pixel Chick Damned in Black Dubtastic Juuichi Aquired-taste Photoshopsupport.com’s Brush Page I hope you all find these as useful as I have! If you need help installing these, check out my Photoshop Tip #1: Where to get brushes? journal entry. These are my pieces which use any of the above dingbats/fonts (will add as I create more):

Okay, so you’ve seen some amazing work online and wondered where the artist got all those astounding background effects or how they did that cool layered effect. Well, as surprising as it may sound, some of those effects were done using a very common Photoshop preset: Brushes. You may be asking yourself, don’t I already have brushes installed with my Photoshop CS3 (or CS2) software? Well, yes, you do. But those are the basics. There are a ton of awesome people out there in internet land who are making additional brushes (and other plugins) for you to use with your software. These plugins are very easy to download and install. I will try to give you a short rundown of what to expect when installing these brushes. For more information as to how to use them or for more detailed installation information or installation for a MAC OS, please consult the very wonderful Photoshopsupport.com, a very neat index of everything Photoshop! (Please note: The following instructions are very, very simplistic because I wanted even the novice Photoshop user to be able to use these tools. I know there are a bunch of different ways to do these things (even some that are easier), but I wanted to put it in basic terms without all the fancy language and extra steps because I remember how it was when I first started teaching myself to use the Adobe programs. Plus, this is not intended to be a full fledged tutorial.) The first step is to download some really cool brushes from an online provider. Some brush sets you will have to pay for, others are free with some restrictions, and others are completely free. Make sure you read the website’s policy before you use them. You can view my Photoshop CS3 (and CS2) Brushes journal entry to visit the websites where I have downloaded most of my brushes from. Most of them have free areas or are completely free and all you have to do is link back to them. Once you have chosen the brush set to download, simply download it to your computer. Because the files are normally saved in a Zip file, I start off by downloading the file to my Desktop first and then moving them over after (this is to avoid confusion). However, if you feel comfortable unzipping them right into the proper file, then by all means go-ahead-with-your-bad-self! After you have downloaded the Zip file to your Desktop, you will need a program (such as WinRAR, which is what I use) to unzip the file. At this point, you may be asking where you unzip the file to? Well, inside the Zip file may be a read me (.txt) file and other junk (which may be of interest to you) and there should also be a brush (.abr) file, which is the one you want to unzip. You can unzip the brush file onto your Desktop and then move it over manually, or you can unzip it to the Photoshop directory itself. Regardless of which method yo use, your ultimate goal is to get that .abr brush file into a specific folder in your Photoshop program’s file. For brushes, the file you will want to place your .abr brush files into is the “Brush” file within the “Presets” file. So, how do you get there? Open your My Computer and find the drive which has the folder “Program FIles”. Now, open “Program Files” and then find the folder labeled “Adobe”. Next, open the “Adobe” folder and you will see ALL of the Adobe programs, which are installed on your system. Locate the “Adobe Photoshop CS3” (or CS2) folder and open it. Find the “Presets” folder and open it. Finally, you will see a folder called “Brushes”. Open it. You can now see ALL of the brushes that are installed to use with your Photoshop program. This “Brushes” folder is where you want to place all of your downloaded .abr brush files. So, the quick breakdown to find the “Brushes” folder is: Program Files >>> Adobe >>> Adobe Photoshop CS3 (or CS2) >>> Presets >>> Brushes Once you have unzipped the files or drag-and-dropped them into this file folder, you can close the folders. You will also need to re-start your Photoshop program in order for the brushes to be finalized and installed and ready for use (sometimes, you have to re-start your computer as well). After you have re-booted your software, open a blank file and click on the “Brush Tool” or simply press its keyboard shortcut ( B ) to activate it. Now, right click anywhere on the page and your brush palette should appear (this is where you control the brush size/hardness, etc.) and in the upper right hand corner you should see a little black triangle with a circle around it. Click on that little triangle/circle icon and…. whaaaaa-la! Your newly installed brushes are there just waiting for you to experiment with them! All you have to do is click on a preset and it will ask you if you would like to load those brushes. Click “Ok” and they will appear in your brush palette waiting to be used and abused! So, go have fun with your new brushes and get creative! The last step, of course, is to add your comments below! Add your brush tips (pun intended) below so that we can all learn from each other! Cheers!

I am certainly no expert at making tee shirts. I know there are others out there who are the real experts. So I’m just going to share a few helpful hints that came out of my struggles to get two tee designs uploaded on RB. Here’s what I did: Opened Photoshop Elements (or any other image editing program) and set up a new empty page. Set the dimensions to 2400 width x 3200 height with a transparent background. IMPORTANT NOTE: If the background is not transparent, it will not work! If you are one pixel off on the dimensions, it will not work! You cannot transpose the pixels either (NOT 3200 width x 2400 height) as it will not work! Transferred (copied) an image to the blank/transparent background. Added text to complete my design. Saved image as a .png file. NOTE: Other file extensions (such as .jpg) will not work! It must be a .png file! Uploaded to Redbubble with a default color and a default style. This will be the color and style (short-sleeve, long sleeve, etc.) you want to display on the page to showcase your design. NOTE: If you forget to choose the defaults, it will not work! Should I have a contest to see who can guess all the things I did wrong when I first tried to upload a tee shirt design? LOL! Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have problems or further questions. I can’t talk about these filters in any sort of technical way, but I can explain what I bought, and how good they are at allowing you to shoot dawn and sunset without losing all your sky detail. I started off with a set of Cokin P filters. The filters sit in a plastic holder, that attaches to the front of your lens by way of an adaptor ring. The ring needs to fit the front element of your main landscape lens. When I used the Canon 20D the Cokin P was fine, with no vignetting, but once I bought the full frame Canon 5D, my lens had to be closed down to 24mm wide. This was unacceptable to me, since I like wide landscapes. Looking into various other filters meant spending quite a bit more money, however, all the reviews showed Lee filters to be ideal. There are a couple of companies here in Oz that sell them, and after wasting time ordering and paying in advance to an overseas company, only to find that they were out of stock, with no idea of a delivery date, I asked for a refund and contacted Mediavision in Sydney. Geoff was very helpful, and gave me a quote for a foundation kit, wide angle adaptor ring, a set of 3 neutral density soft graduated filters, and a full 0.6 ND filter. Postage was only slightly extra, and I had them in my hot little hands within the week. Geoff also sent a Lee catalogue. / Mediavision Australia / Sydney Office:- 4 Monash Road,Gladesville NSW 2111 / Phone:(02) 9816 4055 Fax: (02) 9816 1661 / Melbourne Office :- 22 Yertchuk Avenue,Ashwood Victoria 3147 / Phone:- (03) 9807 5133 Fax:- (03) 9807 7814 When I go to the beach, I take a bag with just filters and holder. They all have their soft cloth or soft vinyl bags, and it’s easier to slip them in and out of there without having to take off my backpack. Before dawn I’ll generally just have the adaptor ring and holder on the lens, with no filter. As the sun gets closer to jumping up from under the horizon, the filters are brought into play. Usually I’ll add the 0.6 first, if there’s not much cloud around, and once the sun has risen, the 0.9 will be added on top. The soft graduation means that you can slide the filter up and down, even slightly below the horizon, and it doesn’t leave a solid line. I haven’t been in a situation where I think I’d need the hard grad, to be honest. The holder turns easily if you wish to switch to portrait mode, just remember to turn it back when you go back to landscape mode! Because I live in Queensland where the sun is especially bright, all year round, it’s important to have these filters to make the most of a good sky. It’s near impossible to capture sky detail AND foreground detail without them. I don’t shoot in the daytime if I can get away with it, usually we pack up and leave the beach within 30mins after sunrise. I believe that you can still make good use of the ND grads all through the day, but I don’t have any real experience of that. Even shooting waterfalls can be easier when using ND filters, because it cuts out some of the light that might otherwise over-expose your image if you’re trying for silky water. The only problems we’ve all had is when the sea mist is particularly bad. In that instance we are constantly looking for ways to clean the filters, and still haven’t come up with a satisfactory solution. If anyone can help, we’d be much obliged! I hope this helps, as I said, not techy, but may be helpful for anyone looking to know what to buy….. cheers This has also been added to the tips and advice forum of All Seascapes Group forum

Attention all Photographers! I am writing an article on the subject of photo sharing sites & would very much appreciate your help in my research for this topic. I’m taking a poll on how many of us have accounts with several other photo sharing or photography related sites, and if you believe you are “addicted to photo sharing” like I am. It will only take a few seconds for you to answer these three one-word-answer questions: 1. How many photo sharing or photo related sites are you a member of? 2. Approximately how much time per week would you say you spend on these sites (combined time rounded up)? eg. 5-hours, 10-hours, 20-hours, 30-hours 3. Do you consider your online photo sharing as “addictive” in nature? (yes or no) PLEASE NOTE: No names will be used in the article – I’m only looking for usage numbers as a data basis for the article. / / Thank you VERY much in advance for your help! Cheers, S. / ___________ Wikipedia Photo sharing is the publishing or transfer of a user’s digital photos online, thus enabling the user to share them with others (whether publicly or privately). This functionality is provided through both websites and applications that facilitate the upload and display of images. The term can also be loosely applied to the use of online photo galleries that are set up and managed by individual users, including photoblogs. The first photo sharing sites originated during the mid to late 1990s primarily from service providing online ordering of prints (photo-finishing), but many more came into being during the early 2000s with the goal of providing permanent and centralized access to a user’s photos, and in some cases video clips too. This has resulted in different approaches to revenue generation and functionality amongst providers. My personal favourite Photo site (and I’ve got memberships with 9), is definitely RedBubble because the talent here is very high, there are no fees to join, you can give and receive peer to peer comments, challenge yourself via groups, create you own professional looking website & the site isn’t riddled with advertising! No other site has all these positive attributes. And the best bonus is that RedBubble allows me to showcase and market my artwork!

I am doing a photo shoot for a lady who needs a good headshot for her business. She does not like to smile but has had some palsy on one side of her face that left one side of her face paralyzed so her face is not symmetrical. My question is that I have one small softbox and one shoot through umbrella. How can I situate and light her to enhance the better side of her face while still showing her entire face? Just angle it or shadow the side that is paralyzed? / Any tips would be appreciated.
