Ok, ok first of all, everyone breath. Cool. Now let’s check. Melbourne experiencing four seasons in one day? Check. Shane Warne caught out again? Check. Running my own business continuing to be challenging? Check. Darren Stones steering the good ship RB around icebergs with a confident if not somewhat alcohol induced flourish? Check. Some people on some distant journal thread arguing about freedom of speech as if RB is the most vital instrument for world peace on earth. Whilst slandering, vilifying and taunting each other with racial, overworked cliches from behind psuedo names? Check. So nothing new or unusual about today then? Un check. What the… Check this… Today in seperate orders people have bought… 1 canvas print of shoe woman plus 20 cards of shoe woman 150 cards of mother & child 25 cards of Possibility II 25 cards of the congo skipping kids & a further 26 of these 20 cards of this beauty 5 cards of these guys 5 cards of these little ones 2 cards of this chap 2 cards of this dude 2 cards of this princess 5 cards of this piece of possibility and 2 cards of this beautiful, precious boy I don’t know anything much about freedom of speech, flags, philosophy or anything like the stuff that’s been going on here this week. But I’ll tell you all ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING. These purchases will save lives. These people live on less than a dollar a day. They live in slums, gutters and sheds made of flattened alluminium cans. The love, they laugh, they dream – they dodge bullets, they run as fast as they can from rapists usually unsuccessfully, they starve and they cry. Every cent of revenue goes to them and the brave souls who live in a war zone to help them. They couldn’t give a rats about flags, and virtual slanging matches. They live on the real edge. I didn’t cry once in Africa. Right now I am sitting here drowning in tears. Maybe change is possible? Even the tiniest bit?? Thanks RB – thanks whoever. EDIT: SEEMS LIKE A GOOD TIME TO DEBUT THIS FELLA. Oh and thinking of turning some of these into Chrissy cards if anyone’s interested.

  • I don’t know if this is factual, fictional, or a bit of each, but the most commonly circulated story about how the ladybug got its name is quite interesting. According to that account, quite a long time ago in Europe, a small farming village was experiencing unprecedented problems with insects that kept devouring the crops. Faced with certain ruin, the peasants fell to their knees and began to beg the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary to send help in their calamity. Their simple faith was soon rewarded. The farmers began to notice a change in the crops. The dying foliage started to revitalize and greenness once again appeared on the landscape. Something was definitely reversing the devastation. As they looked closer, the farmers noticed small red bugs with black dots festooning their tiny concave, shell-like, bodies. Like soldiers called in to battle, they were eating the culprits—destructive aphids. “Our Lady’s bugs, Our Lady’s beetles,” the grateful villagers proclaimed. Eventually, as the small insects became a familiar part of their lives, the people shortened their name to ladybugs, the term by which they are still known today and perhaps one of the reasons why they are so well-loved. Whatever the case, ladybugs are the allies of farmers; they are tiny soldiers that patrol the fields making sure there will be food on the table for everyone.

  • Before our President elect was official, the current administration reacted to the knowing that they were almost out of power, by enacting measures to take Wolves off the Endangered species list, allowing power plants to operate near national parks, loosen regulations for factory farm waste and make it easier for mountaintop coal-mining operations. / I am agitated by all these efforts, however my greater concern is for the WOLF, as it was nearly eradicated here in the 20th century, remarkably recovered by sincere and persistent efforts, only to be threatened once again by the powers-that-be… As the Mourning Moon rises, we give thoughts to brother Wolf / whilst a mighty pen has warranted their sudden deaths to engulf A totem called upon for protection and strength to be taught / is in need of our right actions, not just words – to be fought From each sacred direction the mighty wolf pack calls / for their survival, as others’ face extinction with their fall From the Northern lights an airborne shooting hunt ensues / upon Ice-leapers’ lair, so a governors’ ego does not bruise In the east, paper stained with crude oil and blood / seals Dawn-treaders fate with powers’ arrogant flood To the south ignorance is bliss, to simply remove / Sun-chaser to another place with hunting skills to prove In the west, talk is cheap as habitat quickly disappears / so the Night-stalker fades into the shadows of souvenirs A pack of human voices is needed now to howl / in this eleventh hour, working together – on the prowl. • / Strawberry tart is the second in the series “Delicious”... Watercolour on Sennelier Not Paper… In the description that accompanied “Blueberry Tart” I referred to the work of a famous American artist called “Wayne Thiebaud”, who stated that his subject matter came out of a genuine experience from his life, from the American world, in which he was privileged to be. He went on to say that it was the most genuine thing which he had done. His subject matter is a commentary on the abundance that is a part of American society and the longings and desires ( e.g. all those cakes in a row) that go along with it. Like Thiebaud, this new series is definitely a reflection of my particular experience… it is at once a commentary on the richness of our culture and at the same time a reflection of my daily life… in addition to being a painter, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen… my belief is that since I have to cook to feed my family I had better do it well, (I have an abhorrence of wasted time), so to that end I have almost as many cookbooks as art books, in fact I have a collection of several hundred cook books… I have mentioned before, that there is a peacefulness, a feeling of rightness when I sit down to paint food… although all painting brings me pleasure, there is a special joy when I paint food… it is as though it is what I was meant to do ... The strawberry is rough like a slave’s arduous life / Vermillion, green, and fuzzy like an inscripted pathway / It tastes like the first candy bar in a child’s life / It looks like a cold soda on a hot summer day / Sounds like the Sirens decepting voice J. • / “Lemon Curd and Blueberry Tart” is part of the “Delicious” collection..Watercolour on Arches Not Paper… Featured in Light in the Darkness…. This new series is definitely a reflection of my particular experience… it is at once a commentary on the richness of our culture and at the same time a reflection of my daily life…food is essential to life…suffice it to say we can’t exist with out it ... Painting food has a long history and according to Kenneth Bendiner in the comprehensive “Food in Painting”, is a separate classification of Art…He “underlines the central importance of 16th century innovations in food subjects and the great influence of 17th century Dutch art in the development of food imagery”. / He explains, with examples of paintings by the likes of Rembrandt, Chardin, Manet, Warhol and many others, how “food images can be purely symbolic, surrealist, and an element in allegories…he also shows the optimistic, human centered Renaissance spirit of food painting, and the way abundance, success and fulfillment pervade this art”. “But the illusion fails, and time returns us / to noisy cities where the blue / is seen in patches, up between the roofs. / The rain exhausts the earth then; / winter’s tedium weighs the houses down, / the light turns miserly—the soul bitter. / Till one day through a half-shut gate / in a courtyard, there among the trees, / we can see the yellow of the lemons; / and the chill in the heart / melts, and deep in us / the golden horns of sunlight / pelt their songs”. excerpt…Eugenio Montale / / (Click image to link)

  • I Am The Silence
    by Wendy Slee

I am the silence / That weaves its way through the blackened sentinels / And binds them together in a tapestry of emptiness. / I am silence…

Picture walking through the fire devastated land….. / there is nothing…. / Nothing left alive….. / How would it feel…..to be there alone…. / and where would your thoughts take you…? This is for the creatures of the land, the birds, bugs and wildlife and the domestic animals, that have suffered so much in silence…..and suffer still…. / I speak for them, from the heart of their silence….... / for / If you must cry “God help them”, or ask where God is in all of this, or pray to God to do something, then try standing in front of a mirror, look yourself in the eye and repeat your cries, but replace the name of God with your own….

  • The title of this painting is a play on words….see the poem on the left below by May Swenson….and like Robert Frost below, I ask the same question of myself very often and the answer is always a loud and resounding…no…no matter what life throws at me, it still worth it. Watercolour on Clayboard…in the Abstract Series… / 173 Views A voice said, / Look me in the stars / And tell me truly, men of earth, / If all the soul-and-body scars / Were not too much to pay for birth. Hello everybody !!! / I’m Fiery and since last year I have been using apophysis – fractal flame generator !! / My main ‘huge’ gallery is at devArt and I’m a very active member there – submitting art, writing tutorials, making resources, writing Art News, featuring many wonderful artists in my journals and ….well I know way too many people LOL… With winter season coming, we all going to be spending more time at home and more time at our computers. I got this silly idea, maybe I can ‘help-out’ with some apo things here on RB via my main account on devArt !!! For people, who use the programs I have some cool tutorials with different styles of fractals and I also have few beginners tutos, which will give you a fast crush-course in what the software does. / I’m not gonna upload those things on RB, as there is no ‘share-download’ function and you would not be able to read the tutorial file then. First lets start with software “how to’s” / apo-Install / / First lets install this program and then we can have a look inside. / The main Apophysis (with the full installation is at apophysis.org) >> Apophysis / The upgrades to Apo, usually are posted at sourceforge >> Apo-Upgrades / You can get newer versions, plugins, 3d version and the downloads are small and fast. Apo -what icon Im clicking / / This is a quick view into Apo, trying to describe what each function/icon does, this way you can learn the software faster and move on to the fun part, making fractals !!! Scripts / / When you just starting out in apo you not gonna be able to make intricate designs right from the beginning, since you will need to practice, but there is some nice tools which can help you out and they called scripts ;) This will run a set of commands, which generate a nice ‘starter’ for you and all the variations you need are placed already. There is few extra tutorials I did write, for my friends and watchers, which can help you, create half descent fractals in few different styles (I’m posting few sample thumbs to give you an idea, what type of images they will create). / You more then welcome to help yourself to them. / Crackle_on_Plastic_Script / Apo-Tuto_Spherical-Bubbles / Spiked_3D_Julian_tuto / Apo-Tuto_Disc-Julian / ! Tiles_Tuto / Click the links, they will take you directly to the tutorials Tutorial Rules for downloads: / - all tutorials are downloadable, all tutorials are copyright protected Fiery-Fire / - all of them are copyright protected (so they CAN NOT be shown, displayed, altered and reposted on any other sites by anybody else then Myself) / - if there are parameter files attached to them, you can use them and you MUST tweak them, so they don’t look like the original onces (change the math and display of the fractal, yes that includes the variations, not only the gradient). Do let Me know, if you find this useful and if you want to leave the comment here or on devArt, that will be greatly appreciated. / Until then – Happy Fractaling !!! / Click the links, they will take you directly to the tutorials
