Its long pointed bracts arch with a particularly pleasing curvature. Its fan shaped clumps, up to 12 feet high, thrive as well in Hawai’i as in its native Costa Rica and Panama. Full sun, ample water, warm air, high humidity, and good soil are all it needs. However, in blooming season, March to May, is short; current research is aimed at expanding its period of availability. Rainbow heliconia resembles giant lobster claw. However, its unopened bracts form a jagged herringbone pattern, its “cheeks” are smaller and its yellow colouration is greenish rather than bright.”: Text quote from the book titled Exotic Tropicals of Hawai’i by Angela K. Kepler It is a beautiful greeting card. We have many varieties of Heliconia blooming on Maui. If you are interested in a particular variety or colour simply drop me a note and let me know. Mahalo!

  • Tropical Heliconia
    by Marilyn Harris

    US$4.09–US$93.48

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Tropical Heliconia These are a close relative of the banana family, quintessentially tropical with large banana like leaves producing flowers that immediately remind you of a tropical paradise. Very few plants can evoke the tropics with such brilliance as the exotic Heliconias. This tropical plant which is a native of Central and South America is also found in some Southwest Pacific islands and its abundance in Southeast Asia is breathtaking. Heliconia has many more common names such as ‘Wild Plantain’, ‘Lobster Claw’ and the widely used ‘False Bird of Paradise’. This exotic evergreen plant blooms in the spring through summer and autumn. It can die back in winter but will bounce back in the spring more vigorous than ever. The leaves are similar to the banana plant and the flowers which are really bracts can be seen in yellow, pink, red, sometimes green and any number of variations on all of these colours. The most spectacular are the vibrant red and yellow of Heliconia rostrata. These flowers are lobster claw like in appearance and adorn the plant in a pendulous fashion. Heliconias can grow from 2ft to more than 20ft. Canon PowerShot A650 IS / 12.1MP – 6x Optical Zoom – 4x Digital Zoom

    by chrispua

    US$4.66–US$106.40

I saw three ants crawling on a Heliconia flower. And they seems to be following the leader. When I finally work on it on my photoshop, I figured, why not make their natural habitat seems like it’s from out of this world. So now the ants have been transported to a Fantasy Land. • Beautiful Fracture
    by Janet Fikar

    US$4.09–US$93.48

This is a tropical flower named Etlingera Elatior Red from the Heliconias Rhizomes family. I shot this beauty while hiking through the rain forests on the big Island of Hawaii. They are very large stock flowers that are native to the tropics. I removed this one from its background, applied the Fractalius filter and then added the flood filter. / /
