Two long months! Where could I go? ” / ** / Nothing’s changed! / When I was about 7 or 8, I felt tempted to add colour to the illustrations, by G. van Raemdonck , in the book: “Alleen op de Wereld” (Alone in the world), the Dutch translation of Sans Famille and now, more than half a century later, I’ve been doing the same. / In the 50’s with coloured pencils. In 2007, with oil paint. / * / (There *is a modern interpretation of the story. But I’d rather not know about it. View here! / More here.... / ... / About the film version / ... / MORE HERE

  • / Based on the drawing / illustration done by G. van Raemdonck, in my well-worn, well read-to-me, as a young boy, favourite book: Alleen op de Wereld (Alone in the World). / Where English-reading children, of my generation might have (all) read Treasure Island, or followed the adventures of Biggles, a lot of my generation grew up with: Alleen op de Wereld., if they read, or could be read to, in Dutch. / / This book was given to me when I was a baby. Read to me several times over by my mother, starting when I was too young for the very sad bits in the book. / ......... / In 2005, I enjoyed searching for the original French version (Sans Famille), among the second-hand books, for sale, along the River Seine, and, via my daughter, being told that Hector Malot had lived in one of the side streets, near-by. / ......... / The book has lost its cover and, when I was about 8 or so, I used coloured pencils to ” improve ” the illustrations by van Raemdonck. / Now I’m doing that again, but with oil paint, on canvas.

  • portrait of robin barker / ...and there’s a biiig wave and Robin dives deep to avoid being battered by the weight of the water; she manages to come out the other side taking a big breath when she resurfaces. When she reaches the rocks she sees a bright blue flash – ‘oh it’s you’ she says. Robin picks up a small rock and manages to break open a sea urchin and watches the Big Blue Groper gorge on it’s innards. Until now Hector hasn’t been caught by the evil fishermen because he has had a magic spell cast over him that makes him sense danger – there are also two magic mermaid witches who taunt spear-fishermen. The two mermaids deter the men with spear guns by blinding them with the reflections of pearl shells and telling the beautiful blue groper to ‘run away, run away’.
