  • The ancient stone circle at Callanish on the Isle of Lewis in The Outer Hebrides is over 4,000 years old and one of the oldest such structures in the world. Though smaller than Stonehenge it is considerably older and is awe-inspiring to visit. Normally seen in sunshine, here we have a photograph taken beneath an umbrella as a storm passsed overhead giving this magical place an altogether unworldly quality.

  • Seascape image taken at Dail Mhor, Isle Of Lewis. This place never ceases to impress and you can always get an image no matter what the weather. Probably my worse ever trip to the Western Isles in the Outer Hebrides. Virtually no light the whole time, it rained virtually ever minute and the wind was blowing the rain into horizontal direction that made it impossible to get any photography done. / However, this one I did manage to get and was so chuffed with the result. It is a 13 second exposure of the waves crashing into this small cove. Location Info: / Dail Mhor or Bagh Dhail Mor / Nearest Town: Carloway, Isle Of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland / OS Grid: 121600,945145 This is an updated image from the original uploaded. There were several aspects of the scene that needed to be attended to (i.e. a rock cloned out on the extreme left) so I took the plunge and made the adjustments. I think the scene is now stronger due to these adjustments. This image is no longer available as an open edition

  • The best way to appreciate this image is to click play on the above YouTube clip, click View Large and sit back to enjoy! Always spectular at this spot on the most northerly point of Isle of Lewis where the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea meet. The waves that come into these weather-beaten cliffs can truly awesome. / The waves in this image are around 50 feet high and lap the top of the cliffs in places. It was truly a remarkable site that you almost see the White Horses running through the waters. Location Info: / Butt Of Lewis or Rubha Robhanais / Nearest Town: Port Nis, Isle Of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland / OS Grid: 152360,965990

  • The shipping forecast had it spot on – “Malin/Hebrides, South Westerly Severe Gale force 9 increasing Storm force 10, occasionally Violent Storm force 11”. / A good day to leave the boat in the marina and go exploring by land! Easdale is a particularly exposed piece of coast on the west of Scotland, where the sea has an uninterrupted run from Nova Scotia. To give you an idea of scale, the rocks in the foreground are a metre in diameter, they aren’t pebbles. Coincidentally, this ‘beach’ is where my wife and I had our first open water scuba dives .. fortunately the sea was a little calmer then!

Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, mounted on a tripod, with polariser attached to the lens, then a single RAW file was processed in Photomatix, again in Photoshop CS3 for a few adjustments. Shot in aperture priority mode at F22. / As always in the Highlands of Scotland, things were too transitory to do a five exposure HDR, the wind came along and ruined the reflection !! • A sunbeam appears suddenly after a day of rain. / Torrin is a small crofting village that sits in the shadow of the hill called ‘The Blaven’ on the shores of Loch Slapin. For me, one of the best places on the Isle of Skye, also known as ‘The Winged Isle’, owing to its shape. also ‘The Misty Isle’ because of the persistent rain and cloud experienced here ! How nice to retire to the warmth of a cosy cottage in such weather ! Shot on a CANON eos 20D mounted on a tripod. f22, 1 sec, cloudy WB, iso 100. Processed in PS CS3 levels and curves adjustments. • Continuing my series World from Above with a view of the medieval Kisimul Castle which lies on a rock in Castlebay on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra. Historic Scotland site Taken just before landing at the island’s beach airport. At the start of my 2007 tour of the Outer Hebrides, we left cloudy Glasgow to fly to sunny Barra on the only scheduled flight in the world to land on a beach with the timetable dictated by the tides! I can highly recommend this amazing trip in a Twin Otter prop plane seating just 15 passengers, and the first officer doubling up as steward! “If it had been clear leaving Glasgow, we would have taken the scenic route a wee bit lower over the Sound of Mull…,” apologised the pilot. He made up for it by doing a circle of Barra before landing. Please enlarge to appreciate the light, etc. better. • Captured freehand in the Blackhouse Museum at Arnol, Isle of Lewis. Smoke from the peat fire in the centre of the main room is caught in the light from the only window. Historic Scotland site The museum is well worth a visit to get insights of what life was like in this typical old stone house. The so-called blackhouses did not have a chimney but the peat smoke rose up through the thatched roof. This had the added advantage of keeping the roof from rotting or rain from coming through. This is my homage to the generations of islanders who lived in these houses. Addtional information from Ranald: “The tar from the peat smoke made everything inside black, hence the name. The beasts were often kept at one end of the house, where the floor sloped down. The heat rising off them kept the smoke away. A very clever system.” Nikon D1X, Nikon 18-70 F3.5-4.5G. • This renovated stone house and byre must be the most photographed house on North Uist (Uist a Tuath). Situated overlooking Vallay Beach (Tràigh Bhalaigh) an amazing sandy bay. Many hundreds of these simple old stone houses stand abandoned throughout the Isles. Some are now being renovated – at considerable expense – often as holiday homes with all mod cons. This does not seem to be an original “blackhouses” which had no chimneys or large windows and were built without mortar but rather in a cottar’s whitehouse with thatched roof. • I couldn’t really choose just one special Scottish place as there are so many but I love the Hebrides and Berneray is one of my favourite islands so this shot represents them all – wide open spaces, beautiful scenery, rugged coastlines, gorgeous beaches, barren hillsides and such welcoming people. Turquoise blue waters over the sound from Berneray to North Uist. Beautiful weather, but unfortunately not really warm enough to swim at just around 13°C. This was taken to the west of the ferry terminal and the causeway that joins the two islands. Nikon D200. Sigma 18-200mm. f/16, -0.7 steps. 1/160s, ISO 100, 26mm. • Suisinish is an abandoned village reached after a rough hour- long walk from Kilbride, near Torrin, Isle of Skye. / This old cottage is too modern to have been one of the dwellings where the folk were evicted to make way for the sheep, which were more profitable to the greedy landowners of the time. Many of the families were separated, and forced to emigrate to America, Canada, and Australia. / I cannot begin to feel their anguish. / There are many ruins scattered around the Brae (hillside), evidence of a thriving, close-knit community torn apart by human greed. Maybe this bulding was built early in the twentieth century, I have no idea and can find no information. / Back to the present….. / There was quite a wait for some usable light, a chilly fierce wind was blowing, rain was brewing, nothing new ! We sat in the shelter of one of those deserted ruins, eating a cheese piece, ( sandwich ) and a cheering cup of hot coffee from the thermos, reflecting on how ‘they’ lived then, compared to us nowadays, and watching the sheep that are now the only inhabitants of this beautiful place. / Rowan trees were planted in the belief they kept evil spirits away, and it is considered very bad luck to cut one down, even today ! This cottage is surrounded by them, I guess the magic didn’t work. A three shot HDR. CanonEOS 40D mounted on tripod, iso 100, auto wb, f22, RAW files converted in Photomatix, and touched up in Adobe CS3. / A little Orton also applied to ‘pop’ the texture of the stone. / A slight vignette added. • Standing above the village of Talisker, you get a tremendous view to the beautiful Cuillin mountains. / I got very lucky with the light here, on a day when the / sun and clouds were playing cat and mouse. Towards evening, the sun broke through long enough to capture the light falling on the village of Merkadale below. / Talisker is famous for the distillery where many visitors go to taste the Malt Whisky. / I confess to being a heathen…....I prefer a nice Cabernet Sauvignon !! Shot on my Canon EOS 50D, on tripod, polarising filter, iso 100, cloudy wb, f16, 1/25sec, – 1 exposure compensation to retain that dark moody sky, canon 17-85mm IS lens set at 85mm, RAW file processed in Camera Raw, then levels/curves/ selective colour/ in CS3. / Sharpened with Intellisharpen. • The Faerie pools are very photogenic, and I like them best on a ‘bad’ weather day, when you can attempt to capture the mood of the surrounding dark and brooding mountains. This view is looking towards a famous climb, called “Stovepipe Gully”. / The rocks are slippery, not an easy place to set up a tripod, and I have been observed by more sane folk than myself, crawling on hands and knees for the best vantage point ! / There is a trail/walk alongside the burn and various pools that goes quite some way into the hills, amidst very grandiose scenery….....but prepare for wet feet, the ground is amazingly boggy here …...... and those rocks you have to clamber over to get your shot ? EXTRA slippery !! This is a three RAW HDR, shot on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted on the tripod, polariser fitted, to lose two stops of light for the blur effect, f27, underexposed by half a stop, then a +2EV and -2EV from that reading, iso 100, auto wb, processed in Photomatix, then in Adobe CS3 with various tweaks to colours etc., and where the water was burned out by the HDR process, layered in parts of the original 0EV file.
