The ancient stone circle at Callanish on the Isle of Lewis in The Outer Hebrides is over 4,000 years old and one of the oldest such structures in the world. Though smaller than Stonehenge it is considerably older and is awe-inspiring to visit. Normally seen in sunshine, here we have a photograph taken beneath an umbrella as a storm passsed overhead giving this magical place an altogether unworldly quality.
Always spectular at this spot on the most northerly point of Isle of Lewis where the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea meet. The waves that come into these weather-beaten cliffs can truly awesome. / The waves in this image are around 50 feet high and lap the top of the cliffs in places. It was truly a remarkable site that you almost see the White Horses running through the waters. Location Info: / Butt Of Lewis or Rubha Robhanais / Nearest Town: Port Nis, Isle Of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland / OS Grid: 152360,965990
Seascape image taken at Dail Mhor, Isle Of Lewis. This place never ceases to impress and you can always get an image no matter what the weather. Probably my worse ever trip to the Western Isles in the Outer Hebrides. Virtually no light the whole time, it rained virtually ever minute and the wind was blowing the rain into horizontal direction that made it impossible to get any photography done. / However, this one I did manage to get and was so chuffed with the result. It is a 13 second exposure of the waves crashing into this small cove. Location Info: / Dail Mhor or Bagh Dhail Mor / Nearest Town: Carloway, Isle Of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland / OS Grid: 121600,945145 This is an updated image from the original uploaded. There were several aspects of the scene that needed to be attended to (i.e. a rock cloned out on the extreme left) so I took the plunge and made the adjustments. I think the scene is now stronger due to these adjustments. This image is no longer available as an open edition

The shipping forecast had it spot on – “Malin/Hebrides, South Westerly Severe Gale force 9 increasing Storm force 10, occasionally Violent Storm force 11”. / A good day to leave the boat in the marina and go exploring by land! Easdale is a particularly exposed piece of coast on the west of Scotland, where the sea has an uninterrupted run from Nova Scotia. To give you an idea of scale, the rocks in the foreground are a metre in diameter, they aren’t pebbles. Coincidentally, this ‘beach’ is where my wife and I had our first open water scuba dives .. fortunately the sea was a little calmer then!
A huge menacing cloud approaches Kyleakin Harbour. / The ruined castle dates back to the twelfth century. Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, mounted on a tripod, with polariser attached to the lens, then a single RAW file was processed in Photomatix, again in Photoshop CS3 for a few adjustments. Shot in aperture priority mode at F22. / As always in the Highlands of Scotland, things were too transitory to do a five exposure HDR, the wind came along and ruined the reflection !! Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
Kinloch war memorial. Lewis. Despite the long list, there are only 17 family names here. Also, the memorial lists which croft the fallen came from. This allows you to see the cost of war to some families and the small, scattered communities of the Western Isles. This image has been featured on the Red Bubble home page.

Idyllic weather and a fabulous scene, viewed from Elgol towards the Cuillin Mountains, across Loch Scavaig. / I loved the way the sun turns the rocks to the colour of melted honey !! / One of my absolute fave places on Earth , there is so much here for the photographer !! Shot on a Canon EOS 40D with a polarising filter attached.
The old Telford bridge at Sligachan on the Isle of Skye, with Marsco over the central arch. The Isle of Skye is off the west coast of Scotland.
Another image from a recent trip to the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. The clouds came in quickly covering the sun, but not before putting on quite a performance with the light!

The Chapel by the Loch is based on a small sketch made during a visit to the Outer Hebrides off north west Scotland. I have a good visual memory and can recall images quite a long time after I saw them. In fact like a good wine they often improve over time. It was late evening (it hardly goes dark in mid summer up there) and the Loch was almost completely silent apart from the odd sea bird.. you could also just here the faint plop of the sea as it broke in tiny ripples on the shore. It had been a warm day and a sea mist was rolling in.. obscuring the horizon.. and slowly the faint orange orb of the moon emerged through the gloom.
Tobermory Not the ‘classic’ view of Tobermory, but I was pleased with this one, nonetheless. Someone evidently spends a lot of time caring for this beautiful garden, and with that view, who can blame them. Tobermory is the ‘capital’ of the Isle of Mull, the 2nd largest of the Inner Hebridean islands and the 4th largest of the Scottish islands. Mull has been inhabited for around 8000 years, but Tobermory was established as recently as 1788 by the British Society for Encouraging Fisheries. Due to its proximity to Oban, it was never a big success as a fishing port, but many yachtsmen (and photographers) have had reason to thanks its founders! Date: 19th August 2008
