If you’re interested, there’s a new group for all your Art Deco images Art Deco was a popular international design movement from 1925 until 1939, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts and film. This movement was, in a sense, an amalgam of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, functional, and modern.

i showed my art this past sunday at a community open house for my friend’s massage therapy business….it was an interesting day…i connected with several new people and made some real heart connections….and…i heard some amazing life stories….one in particular has stuck with me and it feels like it is meant to be shared….i will tell it as best i can in my own words to honor the persons involved…. a woman shared with me that she is a breast cancer survivor…when she was sick, her mother was 92 and not doing that well, so she never told her about the cancer. one day her mother asked her, ‘do you think there is really a heaven?’....the woman replied, ‘yes i do….you have been teaching me that all my life!!!’ (apparently the mother was very religious) the woman then said to her mother….’why don’t you just come back and tell me when you get there?’ and the mother asked her, ‘do you really think i can do that?’ ‘yes i do’, was the woman’s reply. on the day the woman went in to have her mastectomy, her mother was not doing well at all, but nothing was said to the woman about it. when she came out of surgery and woke up, her husband was white as a sheet, and told her, ‘your mother died.’ she smiled and said, ‘i already know that.’ while in surgery, she had seen her mother dancing with her father, who had passed in the 70’s, and her mother had said to her….’there is a heaven, it’s wonderful over here, and you will be just fine, little one’......(the woman was the youngest of 5 children). and later, a family member told the woman that on the day her mother died, as she was in and out of consciousness, she rubbed her left breast and tears streamed down her face…..it was the daughter’s left breast that was cancerous…... the woman told me that this whole situation was the greatest gift of her life….. how many of us would say that about having breast cancer & going through chemo and mastectomy surgery? it was such a heartwarming story and another reminder to me that in this life, we always have a choice as to how we see the journey and the so-called ‘obstacles’ we encounter…..we can choose to see ourselves as victims…..or, like this woman, we can see the bigger picture and know that all is well, everything is for a purpose, and know that all of life is a gift and a blessing….. thank you so very much to this beautiful woman, whose name i do not even know, for touching my life in such a profound way and for expanding my awareness that perception really is everything.

How wonderful to wake up this morning (in a terrible rush I might add … I am such NOT a morning person!) and find that two of my pieces have been featured. The always wonderful group of Image Writing from “I don’t know how she does it each day” Cora and Anne Marie has shown favor to my piece Light from the Window which is a continuing story that must wait a few more days for its conclusion … SMILE! I am going to a Christmas Party tonight … woohoo! Perhaps I will see Anna there and that mysterious “Gentleman Caller”. Got you curious? Click on the link and go on thru parts 1-3 If that mystery is not enough, then explore with me where that heavenly music is coming from …. The beautiful and talented Ushna told about her delight group C.O.R.E who have honored me once again with a feature of Music for the Gods I am so blessed and take a look at all the pieces featured … I am honored to be in such GRAND COMPANY! Thank you all. / —Judi

  • A week in 5DmkII heaven
    by Travis Easton

I just got back today from a week down at Lake Tyers (near Lakes Entrance, Victoria) with my family, my first trip away with my 5DmkII. Where do I start, the experience of shooting with this tool was absolutely amazing and liberating, and the contrast from shooting film (Velvia 50 usually) could not be more pronounced. For a start it just does so much more feature wise. It took me a few days just to finish reading the manual and working out how everything worked. I’m still a little slow and clumsy and seem to accidentally reset half the parameters every five minutes but I’m getting there. Yesterday I went down Royal Cave at Buchan and was not permitted to take a tripod into the cave, I did anyway but there was only one spot that was big enough and we stopped in long enough for me to use it. Anyway I set the ISO to 6400 and aperture to f/2.8 on my lenses and basically from what I can tell on the LCD monitor everything worked hand-held without flash a result utterly inconceivable with my old setup. I’ve also never had much success with wildlife and birds. I either optimized for landscape or wildlife with landscape usually winning. Sometimes I’d take a 400 speed film but I found the changing film process so time consuming that by the time I did it my companions were either annoyed and or the wildlife had gone so eventually I stopped bothering. Now I just set the shutter to 1/250th, center weight the metering, let the camera decide ISO and motor drive away, something I never did with film due to the expense. Witnessed one of the most amazing sunsets on Monday night over a perfectly calm Lake Tyers (after dinner and putting the kids to bed). The reflections were amazing and the sky glorious. I bracketed everything, experimented with filters way more than usual and with the instant feedback worked out the best way to do it, even getting a number of great bird silhouettes against pink sky and lake in the process. On Wednesday (my family free adventure day) I traveled a few hundred kms through mountains and dirt roads to get to Erinundra plateau and after initial disappointment over a closed road, decided to do the walk anyway and hiked the 6km to get to the start of the off-track section (another 6km). First Creek Falls were apparently very popular a few years back after being featured on the cover of a guide book but from what I can tell seem to have reverted to a completely pristine state again due to the road closure (I found no sign of previous human presence whatsoever). On the arduous walk in I was very worried about how poorly my shots would work out due to the extreme light and shadow conditions caused by the cloudless blue skies but the weather completely closed in just as I got there giving the most glorious even light on the still pumping (due to recent heavy summer rains) First Creek Falls. I spent a few more adventurous hours exploring the precipitous gorge and falls below the main drop but unfortunately had to leave all too soon at 6:00pm so I could reach the road again in daylight hours. A huge day, as I got up at 5:30am and didn’t hit the sack until 1:30am but enormously satisfying and rejuvenating. In retrospect I am wrapped at the National Parks decision to increase the difficulty of access to this area as it seems to have preserved this delicate and wild area very successfully. For a few of my technical thoughts, the three programable custom setting on the dial C1, C2 & C3 are indispensable on this highly configerable camera (once I worked out how to use them), I just wish there was a C4, C5 & C6 as well. The most annoying thing I found with the camera was it’s inability to shoot three bracketed images off one shutter press in combination with a 2 second shutter delay (to eliminate body shake on my tripod). Am I the only one out there that does this? To me this is such a standard and obvious way to operate a camera that I am dumb founded that (as far as I can tell) it is not possible, having to press the shutter three times and waiting 2 seconds between each plus processing time just seems silly. If anyone else has worked it out please let me know. I would also love to see a five bracket option, i.e. 2 under, one on, 2 over for all those hard core HDR users out there. To my great surprise I completely filled my 16gig card and never got around to shooting off the last 5 frames on my film camera but wow what an amazingly liberating experience it is to finally be shooting with amazing glass on an amazing camera. Unfortunately my computer has a nasty virus on it at the moment and I will have to wait until it is re-imaged before I can download and consequently upload my shots so you can see whether all my talk has actually converted into anything worth while. I know all this stuff is probably no big deal to all you long term digital users but for me it has been an amazing week of photo heaven which has opened up the possibilities for photographic creativity enormously and I am very excited about this and the possibilities this brings to the future. Have a good one, will start posting soon. Trav

  • The Solstice...
    by Vanessa Barklay

The weekend that passed 13th-14th June 2009 was the Cairns Winter Solstice Celebration & Sustainable Lifestyle Gathering 2009 event, which was not actually in Cairns but just out of Ravenshoe, where I live, at an area called Sugar Bag Station near Mt Garnet, 3 hours from Cairns. I was not able to attend it even though I would have loved to, my friend Konrad went, he of the Celebrate! being an Individual…at my PaRtY! in Australia! You’re Standing In it…. Konrad will give me the story anyways…but for anyone who doesn’t know much about it, it is a Celebration of the Solstice, which controls history as far as man can remember back…Christmas itself is a Christian tradition placed over the pagan Solstice celebrations and this was common so most Christian traditions are steeped in Pagan celebration. The original Easter is the celebration of Spring really, Eostre, a goddess, the word estrogen, the female hormone comes from her name, the eggs and rabbits represent fertility and believe me the old Fertility Rite celebrations were pretty wild!! Mother Goddesses are all the main theme in them, famous mythical Greek Goddesses such as Demeter (and her mysteries) and Artemis (and famous brother Apollo) are all entwined into the Solstice story and to me it is absolutely fascinating stuff! I have studied the Solstice, not in an astronomy sense but the effects it has had on the ancient cultures and countries of the world and the powerful effect this has on our whole being and nature in general is worth a mention.. If you are thinking of something that means anything here, we could look at Stonehenge and the gatherings they have their on the Solstice, what does it all mean…this is ancient stuff, pre any other known religion and the basis for most pagan celebrations or celebrations of the Earth and the Gods each culture associates with the event as mentioned earlier. There is a Winter Solstice and a Summer Solstice and both are reversed when in the Northern Hemisphere or Southern. The Great Pyramid has an opening half way up one side leading out from the Grand Gallery, at the solstice a beam of light hits this opening precisely….many other monuments have this occurance too, Stonehenge again probably one of famous, one of the latest scientific findings which i would tend to think is spot on is that Stonehenge, when looked down on from the top resembles ancient images of the womans uterus, that being the whole area being celebrated in these Fertility rites. Astronomically, here is a quick run down of it from Wiki (Solstice) / -A solstice is an astronomical event that occur twice each year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is most inclined toward or away from the Sun, causing the Sun’s apparent position in the sky to reach its northernmost or southernmost extreme. The name is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, the apparent movement of the Sun’s path north or south comes to a stop before reversing direction. The term solstice can also be used in a wider sense, as the date (day) when this occurs. The solstices, together with the equinoxes, are connected with the seasons. In some cultures they are considered to start or separate the seasons while in others they fall in the middle. The English expressions “midwinter” (winter solstice) and “midsummer” (summer solstice) may derive from a tradition according to which there were only two seasons: winter and summer. Midsummer’s Day is 24 June, about three days after the solstice itself). Similarly 25 December is the start of the Christmas celebration, which was a pagan festival in pre-Christian times, and is the day the Sun begins to return to the northern hemisphere. Many cultures celebrate various combinations of the winter and summer solstices, the equinoxes, and the midpoints between them, leading to various holidays arising around these events. For the December solstice, Christmas is the most popular holiday to have arisen. In addition, Yalda, Saturnalia, Karachun, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Yule (see winter solstice for more) are also celebrated around this time. For the June solstice, Christian cultures celebrate the feast of St. John from June 23 to June 24 (see St. John’s Eve, Ivan Kupala Day, Midsummer), while Neopagans observe Midsummer. For the vernal (spring) equinox, several spring-time festivals are celebrated, such as the observance in Judaism of Passover. The autumnal equinox has also given rise to various holidays, such as the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. At the midpoints between these four solar events, cross-quarter days are celebrated.— The Winter Solstice here will be the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This event was huge this weekend, advertised world-wide, people I know were there were from everywhere, even Israel!! Here is the official website to the mentioned event Winter Solstice and from it…. -The New Solar year begins with the turning point of the Winter Solstice, as it has down through eons-an unending cycle of dark and light, waning and waxing, ultimately representing nature’s birth, death, and rebirth. The Winter Solstice is a time to affirm our spiritual ties to nature through celebrations and traditions that are thousands of years old.- So, there you go, embrace the Solstice, your Spirit and Nature as we all gaze into the Heavens next time and remember that you yourself are up there and part of it….in the Zodiac, an amazing array of 12 constellations that each and every one of us are made up of…...myself, I hang out in the Libran sector :O) I hope you enjoyed hearing about the Solstice, some you may not have known about, it happens around June 21 and I wanted to remind you about it… Vanessa :O)
