I’d walked the beach near our house every morning for weeks and never took any notice of this oddly shaped stone lying in the sand – until one day when I came down and the tide was in so much more than usual that the sea had stretched out and created a pool around the stone – forming this beautiful reflection. It seemed oddly backwards that on this bright, clear autumn morning, walking along a serene stretch of beach with the inviting sea at my side I should find, bathed in the glorious comforting warmth of sunrise, a heart of stone…

This rosebush was a gift from my husband on Mothers Day about 3 years ago. It is my favorite. The color of the roses are sooo bright when the sun hits it, it looks like it’s on fire!. And it always tugs on my Heart Strings….

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant in the family Asteraceae and native to the Americas, with a large flowering head (inflorescence). The stem can grow as high as 3 metres, and the flower head can reach 30 cm in diameter with the “large” seeds. The term “sunflower” is also used to refer to all plants of the genus Helianthus, many of which are perennial plants. What is usually called the flower is actually a head (formally composite flower) of numerous florets (small flowers) crowded together. The outer florets are the sterile ray florets and can be yellow, maroon, orange, or other colors. The florets inside the circular head are called disc florets, which mature into what are traditionally called “sunflower seeds,” but are actually the fruit (an achene) of the plant. The inedible husk is the wall of the fruit and the true seed lies within the kernel. The florets within the sunflower’s cluster are arranged in a spiraling pattern. Typically each floret is oriented toward the next by approximately the golden angle, producing a pattern of interconnecting spirals where the number of left spirals and the number of right spirals are successive Fibonacci numbers. Typically, there are 34 spirals in 1 direction and 55 in the other; on a very large sunflower you may see 89 in one direction and 144 in the other. source: wikipedia

Acrylic and India ink on canvas. I was working on this painting when my wonderful cocker spaniel / old English sheepdog mix named Rembrandt became sick and passed away in the course of only one week. During this time a heart-like shape developed in the center that wasn’t there when the painting began. I feel this subconsciously evolved as my heart ached over the situation. This painting literally has my tears mixed into the layers of paint, ink and tissue paper that formed this tribute to my dear old friend.

I used the magnificent interior of MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) for the background of this shot. It’s an architectural paradise…wonderful nooks and crannies…marble and granite. The heart is one of many original pieces scattered throughout Union Square which I shot and superimposed. FEATURED in San Francisco~ thanks to the hosts! Inspired by the famous Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett song.
