  • This is a compilation I have done with Rebecca Zachariah after our trip to Rwanda. In a nation of shattered souls post genocide, hope remains in the form of new life. These people have witnessed death on massive scale. You can see how precious they consider life from this shot. ALL PROCEEDS TO HEAL AFRICA HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! • This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. I was totally overpowered by her intensity. After I took the shot and showed it to her she smiled and thanked me. It still gives me a shiver to look at it now. HEAL Africa calendar available now!!! too late :)

  • The eye perceives light it only when it is mixed with darkness. Light itself is invisible yet our eyes see nothing without it. Light actualizes the form within being. When the single reality of pure light falls upon physical realities, they become visible, manifesting an endless array of color and dimension, a garden of rich and varied hue. Many spiritual paths teach that what unfolds in the surrounding world and within the realm of personal experience is not a black and white drawing with clearly defined endings and beginnings, no matter how obvious it may first appear. Life is far more interesting than that for every happening unfurls a shifting spectrum of color and interpretation. Its always up to us whether to aacpet and flow with something as it is happening, and looking no deepr than the surface, or to plumb deeper for multiple levels of meaning and wisdom. Its always a toss up, and there’s no right or wrong answer in these choices. This painting speaks of embracing the mixture of light and dark in life, the kaleidoscopic unification of the opposites that is life. Intergrating and balancing is the way to healing and wholeness. / Text and image copyright Helena Nelson Reed

  • The Healing Light
    by Sophie Shapiro

  • A wierd contradiction happens in Africa. People are so very poor, the only clothes they can get are those given away by charity or sold for a pittance by second hand dealers. Such organisations or traders get their clothes ultimately from the charity bins you and I donate to. Therefore people living in abject poverty wear outfits with brand names emblazoned on them such as: Timberland, Nike or Ralph Lauren. The same names people in the west pay a lot for. Ironic? Yes. Amusing? Yes a little. I came across this beautiful young girl in the ruins of broken lava, homelessness and chaos. She was wearing a light blue dress and carrying a burberry hand bag. Classic. And there’s a trucker cap. / Hey, doin’ good needn’t mean you can’t be cool at the same time. • As with ‘Burberry girl’ looks can be deceiving. Beauty in poverty hits you between the eyes in Africa. This was taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo. If you have seen the film ‘Blood Diamond’ then you will have a good understanding of what it’s like in D.R. Congo. The film was sadly accurate. – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Black & white photography

We are all marred by life in some way or another. This image is about overcoming. Overcoming illness (emotional and physical) and destruction of all kinds. This image is about hope and restoration. This image is about healing. Most importantly, this image is about wholeness. / / / In that day I will restore / David’s fallen tent. / I will repair its broken places, / restore its ruins, / and build it as it used to be. • The model in this pic was experiencing her first fully nude shoot. Whilst she admired the shots she had seen in my portfolio and really wanted to do it she was very scared. Her boyfriend had pressured her not to do it and she felt that society may judge and brand her. So it took enormous courage for her to go through with the shoot. On the day she commented on feeling so free and so beautiful within. I think this particular shot depicts the joy that can come from choosing our heart over our fears. • Come in from the rain
    by amarica

    US$3.42–US$91.20

“If you can’t stand the pain, / then come in from the rain,” / that’s what I heard him say, / but I didn’t know it’s meaning. I got lost along the way, / somewhere between tomorrow and yesterday. / And his words echoed in my brain, / but I still didn’t know the meaning. / / I thought I saw him today, / but it was just a memory of his face, / And then a stranger walked away. / It was then I realized his meaning. I felt the rain upon my face / washing the pain away… / Now my heart could mend again, / when I understood the meaning. My heart and mind washed clean, / I let him fade away… / He wasn’t worth the pain / the answer now was clear…that’s the meaning. ^This artwork was inspired by the poem Come in from the rain I wrote many years ago after losing someone I loved dearly who did not return that love. I found I could grow through and recover. It taught me the meaning of the mental cleansing and the metaphorical healing of the spiritual rain that gives us new beginnings and lets us wash away the pain. • Evolution
    by Marny Barnes

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Stock pic of BG provided by Don Wright. http://www.eyefetch.com/image.aspx?ID=651251 “The childhood memories(or flashbulb pictures as they are commonly referred to) of my parents are all larger than life, looming demons of fury. Twisted angry faces, lunging at me quicker than I can get away from them, hands grabbing me, hitting me, HURTING me. Huge features…the point of view from the child who is physically much smaller than they are. I always try and remember that when I am dealing with my daughter. Get down on the floor…don’t tower over her when I’m angry. Fear is not want I want her to remember me by. / / It’s in me though…there have been moments of pure rage and fury when I have wanted to pick her up and force her to do my bidding. I walk away…I give myself a time out instead of giving her one. I found her in my arms once with that look on her face….she was scared. / I wanted to throw up. / I live everyday comparing myself to my parents. I’ve learned everything I should NEVER do from them. / If I do the opposite of what they would have done we might just be O.K. /

  • Mark, an American soldier, gave his life for his fellow countrymen in the war in Iraq. The only one of his unit to survive the initial blast, he battled for life as he was flown back to the United States for medical care. His family flocked to his side and surrounded him with love in his final hours. Not long after his arrival in America, he died on home soil in the arms of his loved ones. His mother Kim, my husband’s first cousin, wrote this poem, “Is it you?” as she struggled with grief and loneliness for her young son. She asked me if I had a dragonfly photo to accompany her poem which relates the tale of the dragonflies that seem to hover near her in a show of consolation. This image is our collaboration, our joint effort, in memory of Mark Graham who defended the cause of freedom with steadfast determination and a valiant heart. May he rest in peace and may the angels surround him and his family now and forever. (100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation; see another image, “Is it you?” in this portfolio if you’d like a green dragonfly. It will print better in the card size). Taken from the Mark W. Graham Foundation website, here is additional information about the foundation to which all funds from the sales of these images will be donated: “The Mark W. Graham Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides support for young people of character and military families in crisis. It honors the legacy of Mark Graham, a fallen soldier whose strength of character and gift of service to his country are an inspiration to all who knew him. Mark was a Lafayette, La., native and his death opened the community’s eyes to the reality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make in their fight to keep our country free. He was married to Stephanie for a little more than a year when he died. Mark was 22 years old.”

  • WARNING: Viewer Discretion Strongly Adviced! This is my first wake-up call in my domestic Violence series. On my old art account I created this series and got quite attention for my work. But what is my goal with that? To manifest with my art that world peace starts at home and you can only end Domestiv Violence when you face the issue and cannot look away from this rapidly growing problem. Could you look away from this artwork? Does this completely caught your attention? It should since those are worlds millions of people hear right now in this very moment and even worse. Did you know: - Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime - The most rapid growth in domestic relations caseloads is occurring in domestic violence filings. Between 1993 and 1995, 18 of 32 states with three year filing figures reported an increase of 20 percent or more. - In a national survey of more than 6,000 American families, 50 percent of the men who frequently assaulted their wives also frequently abused their children. Slightly more than half of female victims of intimate violence live in households with children under age 12. Studies suggest that between 3.3 – 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually. And this is not even the tip of the Iceberg, those are just a few noted statistics, but it is fact that this is not even the half of all “happening” cases around the world. What drove me to make this series? A lot. Someone very close and myself come out of violent families. My life long I have been treated like the sun wouldn’t shine for me too. Years long I have been hid from reality and locked in darkness, I lost my childhood and my youth through domestic violence and I can say that today strong like a rock. My life today is a lot better, my wife gives me the love I never had and felt and I give her the same back in my adornment and service. Unfortunately many woman/children/men go through this hell this very moment but the only problem politicians care about is to build up the nuke stock in their rocket facilities. They rather care to invest more money in war and weaponary as to support families, women and children who deserve a chance to live a happy life like our human and religious right tells us. I want to catch your attention with this image to say to you as a brother of this world, that you have the same rights to live as any other person, your gender, your creed or race doesn’t matter since we are all the same human, the same valuable and same unique and under the face of God are we all the same. Our lifetime is important and how we recieve our family, friends and even our neighbours will not be unseen, the generations will copy your behaviour and treat others the same. So…could you look away? I have a major plan with thi series since I would love to expand this as big as I can (even public plans), the next days will crystalize if I can move someones hearts or not. So, if you look right now at this artwork, and got some free time, leave a comment, and tell me how you feel about it. I can’t and won’t look away.

  • To Let Go
    by Daniela M. Casalla

    US$4.28–US$114.00

To ‘let go’ does not mean to stop caring; / it means I can’t do it for someone else. To ‘let go’ is not to cut myself off; / it is the realization that I must not control another. To ‘let go’ is not to fix; / but to be supportive. To ‘let go’ is not to be in the middle / arranging all the outcomes; / but to allow others to effect their destinies. To ‘let go’ is not to be protective; / it is to permit another to face reality. To ‘let go’ is not to regret the past; / but to grow and live for the future. To ‘let go’ is to fear less and love more. ~ Author Unknown ~
