  • The only song I thought of when I did the HDR processing was “End of the World” by REM. It’s the end of the World as we know it and I feel fine… I took my Camera to Miranda Fair (our local shopping centre) today, because I was hoping to catch a few glimpses of the big storm brewing over Sydney. Instead I ended up with this.

  • This work has been featured in the recent redbubble book The City . “The Big Smoke” also was announced the winner of the Breaking the Rules V: Straight vs Crooked Challenge in the Photography 101 Group Looking at the Sydney CBD from the rooftop parking at Broadway Shopping Centre. In the distance you can see the smoke coming in from backburning operations on the north side of the City. Please also visit my website alexkess.com . Cheers and Thanks, Alex

  • The Province of British Columbia is considered the jewel of Canada, i would have to agree.

  • Captured along the Mount Evans Wilderness in Colorado, this is one of those waterfalls that kind of sneaks up on ya outta the blue, and if you blink, you actually miss it. I really don’t much in the way of long exposure shots, but after being happy with how this one came out, I am going to start doing them more. Hope ya all like it! I would love to donate 100% of the sales of this work during the next 60 days to the Phoenix Appeal in support of the burning bushfires in Australia! • Autumn Travels Shot in Alluvial Fan area of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado What a scene that just glowed…and I mean GLOWED. It made your jaw just drop open. I am fortunate in that no one else was there, and was lucky to be able to take about 100 shots of this scene alone, playing with composition and such, and custom white balance settings, and in this one, something similar to a sunset setting was used. Let me know what ya think! Can ya hear the rustling of the leaves?? / —-John

  • A beautiful shot of a maple trees in the fall with the contrasting sky above. Taken in true Infrared to highlight the foliage and contrast the sky. The leaves were a bright yellow. Rendered as a duo-tone. Location: Gatineau Park, Quebec, Canada. Canon G2 with Infrared R72 filter, / HDR , 3 frames, bracketed., processed with Photoshop CS3 Also appears in the calendar Reflections of the Seasons

  • MUCH BETTER VIEWED LARGER SOLD POSTER TO UNKNOWN BUYER ThankYou For dropping in and viewing my latest work, for those who Favourite I am Honoured Isn’t it wonderful when you get up early, set your camera on a tripod and that great photographer in the sky blesses you with that magic moment ! The roadside Pearsons Lookout, on the Castlereagh Highway just south of Capertee village, gives a view over the expansive Capertee Valley / Surrounded by the wonders of World Heritage listed wilderness, the Capertee valley is the world’s second largest canyon. Capertee is 1 kilometre longer than the Grand Canyon, but not quite as deep. Sandstone cliffs dominate the escarpment, drawing down into a deep chasm carved into the environment over millions of years. With tranquil vistas and serene mountain landscapes the Capertee Valley is abundant in flora and wildlife. Under the sandstone layer stretches an enormous layer of coal and oil shale. Rising majestically out of the valley floor is a monolith in size and spectacle. The impressive peak, Pantoney’s Crown, beckons the keen walker to climb its summit. From the top a 360° panorama, of the dramatic and breathtaking valley. The Capertee valley is located in The Gardens Of Stone National Park The Blue Mountains if a World Heritage Area , a few hours by road west of Sydney and are a must when visiting Sydney. Equipment: Nikon D300, / Technique: GET UP WAY TOO EARLY take 5 bracketted images then run it through Photomatix Pro. Then tidy up image lightly in Capture NX. See Also / Grandeur /

  • THIS IS A BIG IMAGE VIEW LARGER FOR BEST RESULTS This shot was taken from Echo Point in the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area at sunset, it was created from 5 bracketed images using a Nikon D300 fitted with a Nikon 18-200mm. No filters were used. The rock formations to the left are known as “The Three Sisters” the image was taken at sunrise looking past the Sisters certainly have a great view. The Blue Mountains are located 2 hours west of Sydney by road, also by train for visitors to Sydney, there are also organised day trips via motor coach that will take you to the area for the day…. though if you have the time spend a few days in the area. You can see all the attractions, have a devonshire tea in one of the many teahouses, or sit on the edge of the valley that seems to go on forever, and listen to the birdlife. Bushwalking is a must !

  • Published in DIGITAL PHOTO magazine. There exists a whole row of abandoned buildings along Mormon Row, a phtotgraphic delight, if you don’t mind sharing it with a whole bunch of other photographers ! Deservedly popular , backed up as it is by the amazing Teton mountain range. The town of Jackson is nearby. / The Mormon people were evicted when the National Park was created. I decided to give this the HDR and Orton treatment, to bring out the texture of the wood, and add a little drama to the scene. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D,mounted on tripod, polarising filter, iso 100, f22, 1/30 sec, cloudy WB, RAW file, processed in Photomatix, with further adjustments in PS CS3, and a little Orton applied. Finished with LAB colour to oomph it up a bit ! • The Giant Redwood National Park, California, USA, contains the tallest living things on earth, evergreen trees that grow to 350 feet. For me personally, not the most beautiful tree, biggest isn’t always best, but it is pretty overwhelming and magical to walk through on one of the many popular trails that exist here, and to gaze upwards, a neck-breaking experience ! I feel they are best seen in the mist, adding an air of mystery ! / My fave trees ? The Scots Pine and the Silver Birch of course ! Shot on my Canon EOS 20D,mounted on tripod, f11, 1 sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in Photomatix, single file pseudo HDR, adjusted in Adobe Camera RAW, then in CS3 I applied the Orton effect to emphasise the textures on the trunks, reducing the opacities for the final result. • I have fallen in love with our National Parks here in the states after viewing Ken Burns series. I had no idea after just spending time in the Great Smokey National Park how special these parks are and the work that went into creating them. Thank you to all the people that went before and now who had the foresight to protect for us from ourselves to protect these wonders of such spiritual magnitude for us to enjoy. / Tennessee Leica V-Lux 1 HDR in Photomatix, 3 exposures PBS PREVIEWS: NATIONAL PARKS | Extended Preview | PBS
