  • 'Iliki' Spirit of Aloha
    by Karin Taylor

    US$4.70–US$125.40

‘Iliki’ Spirit of Aloha is a mixed media production on canvas textured paper using ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal. My darling ‘Illiki’ was inspired by James Michener’s novel ‘Hawaii’ and the beautiful young hawaiian girl who is one of the charming characters early on in the story. I was completely swept away during the reading of this incredible novel, highly recommended reading :D I think that the song Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole really relates to the story …. as his melancholy voice is so melodically accompanied by the ukelele….. it reminds me of the story of Iliki the young hawaiian girl, who leaves her island when still very young…. forever she haunted the mind of the young minister missionary who tended her and taught her in his first days on the island, he forever wondered how she was faring in the civilised world, having been taken away on a ship by the white men. He felt a certain special kind of fatherly love for this girl, and it tore his heart that she was so clever and cottoned on so well to the new english language, and customs he would teach her, as well as the scriptures…but she was a wild thing, and never one to be ‘pigeon-holed’ or contained… he set her free and never saw her again. Here are the lyrics to Israel’s version of the song, i feel that is how the young missionary felt, even as he grew old on the island of Hawaiia, waiting hoping wondering with every ship that pulled in, whether the young girl Iliki would be aboard and he would welcome her return, sadly that day never came tho: SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW Ooooo oooooo ohoohohoo / Ooooo ohooohoo oooohoo / Ooooo ohoohooo oohoooo / Oohooo oohoooho ooooho / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo Somewhere over the rainbow / Way up high / And the dreams that you dreamed of / Once in a lullaby ii ii iii / Somewhere over the rainbow / Blue birds fly / And the dreams that you dreamed of / Dreams really do come true ooh ooooh / Someday I’ll wish upon a star / Wake up where the clouds are far behind me ee ee eeh / Where trouble melts like lemon drops / High above the chimney tops thats where you’ll find me oh / Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly / And the dream that you dare to,why, oh why can’t I? i iiii Well I see trees of green and / Red roses too, / I’ll watch them bloom for me and you / And I think to myself / What a wonderful world Well I see skies of blue and I see clouds of white / And the brightness of day / I like the dark and I think to myself / What a wonderful world The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky / Are also on the faces of people passing by / I see friends shaking hands / Saying, “How do you do?” / They’re really saying, I…I love you / I hear babies cry and I watch them grow, / They’ll learn much more / Than we’ll know / And I think to myself / What a wonderful world (w)oohoorld Someday I’ll wish upon a star, / Wake up where the clouds are far behind me / Where trouble melts like lemon drops / High above the chimney top that’s where you’ll find me / Oh, Somewhere over the rainbow way up high / And the dream that you dare to, why, oh why can’t I? I hiii ? Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo / Ooooo oooooo oooooo

  • Hybrid dolphins (Wolphins) Information from the Wikepedia Encyclopedia Online : / In 1933, three abnormal dolphins were beached off the Irish coast; these appeared to be hybrids between Risso’s Dolphin and the Bottlenose Dolphin.[3] This mating has since been repeated in captivity and a hybrid calf was born. In captivity, a Bottlenose Dolphin and a Rough-toothed Dolphin produced hybrid offspring.[4] A Common-Bottlenose hybrid lives at SeaWorld California [5] and another one lives at Discovery Cove in Orlando. Various other dolphin hybrids have also been reported in the wild, such as a Bottlenose-Atlantic Spotted hybrid.[6] The best known hybrid however is the Wolphin, a False Killer Whale-Bottlenose Dolphin hybrid. The Wolphin is a fertile hybrid, and two such Wolphins currently live at the Sea Life Park in Hawaii, the first having been born in 1985 from a male False Killer Whale and a female Bottlenose. Wolphins have also been observed in the wild.[7] / Wolphin

  • Ke ala i Kahiki , meaning ” the way to Tahiti”. This collage gives tribute to the maiden voyage of the “HOKULE’A”. A ship designed and sailed according to traditional Hawaiian way-finding (navigating only by the stars, Sun, wind and currents.) Which gave birth to the “Polynesian Voyaging Society” and what some call the beginnings of a Polynesian Cultural Revival, in 1976. / Such a feet, whilst being a brave adventure, is but a re-introduction of what was an integral part of Polynesian society, such voyages between Hawaii and Tahiti in ancient times was not by chance, but purposeful and common place, as was it else where in Polynesia and through out the Pacific. / “Hokule’a” is Hawaiian for “Star of Gladness” and gladness it was for many Hawaiians, in which what was rekindled was a link to their ancestors and distant cousins and thus a greater vision and awareness of being Polynesian. / The significance of this event can not be understated and must be placed along other notable and life changing events of the 20th century. / This Collage shows the “Hokule’a” and her crew crossing the equator toward Tahiti, lead by a pod of nai’a (dolphins). Green and verdant Tahiti stands, the sun rises as the moon above bids farewell. A visit to http://pvs.kcc.hawaii.edu/index.html would feed the imagination concerning the triumph of this voyage and all that has sailed in wake of the “Hokule’a’s” first voyage.
