Mauna Kea, 14000 ft up, after three nights of snow. By the way, this was taken out the window of a moving car. I wasn’t driving, I promise!!! Snow means plenty of light: ISO 400, f/16, 1/2500 sec! See other works from this expedition: Altitude Summit
” ‘O Savai’i ‘o le motu moni o le ōlaga faigatā o Sāmoa.” The island of Savaii is a relatively unspoilt and beautiful place, clean and inviting. This photo is of a beach fale’ ( samoan hut/house ) upon a beach on the north coast of Savaii, the largest of the Samoan islands. If you ever go there, don’t go looking for the hotels in the islands with their conveniences, go to the villages, met the people support the local economies and stay in their Fale’s, to know a place, you must meet and know its people. I can’t wait to i go back!
For most of the 20th Century, the Kekaha Sugar Mill was the centerpiece of agriculture on Kauaʻi’s west side. The sugar mill had a major influence in Kekaha’s development, including banking, employment, transportation, housing and utilities such as water and electricity. The mill employed several generations of local families. It closed in 2000 when the entire sugar industry in Hawaiʻi collapsed. The mill was purchased in 2005 by mainland investors who sold off its heavy machinery to other mills as far away as Africa.
Sunrise over the Crater at the 10,000 ft altitude was at 5:40 AM. It’s amazing when you think about the sheer mechanics of the whole situation. Very humbling and an experience not to be missed if you are on the Island of Maui.
Beauty is Eternally Free / Hamoa Beach Maui Hawai’i I picked some fresh Plumeria blossoms and a branch of blooming Bougainvillea and tossed them onto the luxurious black sand of Hamoa Beach and was only able to get a couple of shots when a wave came in and carried them out to sea. From the atoms of the world, / He created a multitude of mirrors; / into each one of them / He cast the image of His Face; / To the awakened eye, / anything that appears beautiful is only a reflection of that Face. / Now that you have seen the reflection, hurry to its Source; / In that primordial Light the reflection vanishes completely. Do not linger far from that primal Source; / When the reflection fades, you will be lost in darkness. / The reflection is as transient as the smile of a rose; / If you want permanence, / turn towards the Source; / If you want fidelity, / look to the Mine of faithfulness. / Why tear your soul apart over something here one moment / and gone the next?” ~ by Jami ~ Translation by Andrew Harvey and Eryk Hanut Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

Sunset Polo Beach Wailea Maui Hawai’i “There is a Wisdom like a brooding Sun, / Bliss in the heart’s crypt grown fiery white, / The heart of a world in which all hearts are one, / A Silence on the mountains of delight. / A Calm that cradles Fate upon its knees; / A wide Compassion leans to embrace earth’s pain; A Witness dwells within our secrecies, / The incarnate Godhead in the body of man. / Our mind is a glimmering curtain of that Ray, / Our strength a parody of the Immortal’s power, / Our joy a dreamer on the Eternal’s way / Hunting the fugitive beauty of an hour. Only on the heart’s veiled door the word of flame Is written, / the secret and tremendous Name.” ~ poetry by Sri Aurobindo This is a composite of two images stitched one over the other, taken at the same time in the same location on a beautiful evening on Polo Beach at sunset. The luxurious golden sands on this lovely beach are bronzed with the evening light and the dramatic skies were spectacular with a wonderful view of the ‘Au’au channel and Kahalewai, West Maui.
