Nakalele Blowhole truly a miracle of nature. A shelf of lava rock on the north shore of Maui eroded by the punishing sea until the waves created a vent that spews like a geyser off and on and when the llight of late afternoon hits the spray the miracle of rainbow color becomes apparent.

Polynesia is the birth place of surfing, wave sliding. Still today the islands are the object of every surfers obsession, the power and beauty of the pacific swells.
A cleat left from a jetty long since eroded and swept away by the tides on a South Maui Beach with the sacred island of Kahoolawe bathing in the light of the rising sun.
. Large swells hit the south shore of Oahu every summer to the delight of Honolulu surfers. Sandy Beach is famous for its pummeling shore break and death defying boogie boarders, body surfers and skim boarders. . / A larger version can be seen on YOUTUBE . .

An enormous Humpback skims past my kayak revealing it’s scared tail.
As I crawled from my tent with blurred eyes, I could see that the sun was going to rise perfectly behind Alau Island. This image was unplanned, yet a perfectly wonderful stroke of luck.
The Old Salt Barn on Ka’ono’ulu Ranch is fixin’ to fall down any day now, the owner told me. And so I made this old building my priority. Shooting HDR style, was able to capture the full glory of the UpCountry Maui sunset.
Okay, so there I was in my little kayak slowly cruising near the Pali (cliffs) of Maui, when out out the shallow water came the biggest fish I have ever seen! I must have pee’d in my pants. My camera was in my hands already, but the auto-focus was jumping all over the place. It was sort of a slow-motion nightmare, except that it was really cool after I realized that this hummer wasn’t actually going to land in my teeny little boat. I managed to get one photo. Whew.
‘Oheo Gulch, on Maui, is the place I go and camp in my tent, when the congestion of modern-day life gets me down. ‘Oheo is spiritual, full of life, and will energize one’s soul. I made this image in near darkness, after all the tourists had gone home. I layered 5 long exposures—from about 4 seconds to a minute, or more. The place is difficult to capture by camera, but I think I have come close on this one. A large canvas of ‘Oheo Twilight hangs in my own home.
This photograph is a sunrise shot taken at Halona Cove on O’ahu’s eastern shore. The sun appeared to be rising straight out of Haleakala or “House of the Sun” on Maui. Halona Cove is also known as “From Here to Eternity” Beach. This is the location where Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster embraced in the surf in a memorable, steamy scene from the movie of that title. This Hawai’ian man named Dwayne, from Lahaina Maui, has captured the imagination of many “malahine wahine” (women). His striking eyes and firm build represent the features of Hawai’ian royalty from generations past.
The mighty Humpback Whales are making their way back to Maui, for the birthing and mating season. The swim from Alaska, where they have been feeding for the past 8 months. I made this image last year, and just dug it up from the depths of a long-lost hard drive. It is time to get the kayak out again, for more excitement with my big buddies. The nearshore waters of Maui County are a national marine sanctuary.

I thought you may enjoy seeing the beautiful sunset over the island of Lana’i on the horizon, which Jacob and I watched last night from an elevation of about 4000 feet above sea level from Ulupalakua, Upcountry on Maui, Hawai’i. i ‘Okika Honohono / Lovely Orchids blooming at Bully and Kappy’s home / Hana Maui Hawai’i There are many wonderful websites with information on Orchids. There are many groups, clubs and societies and over 20,000 varieties. Many orchids have succulent characteristics. They store water and nutrients in pseudobulbs, leaves and/or other parts of their anatomy. Fresh orchids and other tropical flowers create a unique tropical atmosphere perfect for a traditional or modern wedding theme here on Maui and are very beautiful woven into Haku Lei. Hardy terrestrial orchids include some the rarest & showiest perennials for the garden. These deciduous plants are indigenous to the temperate zones Eurasia and North America. They require woodland conditions for cultivation, preferring shade to part-shade and rich, well-draining soil; somewhat moist. Hardy orchids bloom at 3 – 6 years of age, depending upon the species. And bitter was the darkness that befell the bloomless rose. Only after this earth has been bathed in its holy baptism / shall it become the glorious garden it was truly meant to be.” excerpts from The Prophet’s Candle by Daniel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / This is a composite of two images taken at the same coastal location on Ke’anae Peninsula at the same time stitched together with Smoky City Design – The Panorama Factory software. / Shooting Date/Time 16 April 2007 20:32:35 / Flash Off Shutter Speed 1/250 Aperture10.0 ISO 400 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Sunset Polo Beach Wailea Maui Hawai’i “There is a Wisdom like a brooding Sun, / Bliss in the heart’s crypt grown fiery white, / The heart of a world in which all hearts are one, / A Silence on the mountains of delight. / A Calm that cradles Fate upon its knees; / A wide Compassion leans to embrace earth’s pain; A Witness dwells within our secrecies, / The incarnate Godhead in the body of man. / Our mind is a glimmering curtain of that Ray, / Our strength a parody of the Immortal’s power, / Our joy a dreamer on the Eternal’s way / Hunting the fugitive beauty of an hour. Only on the heart’s veiled door the word of flame Is written, / the secret and tremendous Name.” ~ poetry by Sri Aurobindo This is a composite of two images stitched one over the other, taken at the same time in the same location on a beautiful evening on Polo Beach at sunset. The luxurious golden sands on this lovely beach are bronzed with the evening light and the dramatic skies were spectacular with a wonderful view of the ‘Au’au channel and Kahalewai, West Maui.
