  • To be precise, Caleana major (Flying Duck Orchids) Australian native terrestrial orchids which grow in sandy alkaline heath-land on the east coast. The flowers are only ¾” (2cm) long, two flowers on a n 8” (20cm) stem and with only a single spear shaped leaf at ground level. The flowers of this species are actually upside-down to the normal orchid growth habit. Do you like their little pigtails? When disturbed, the flowers drop their heads, lift their tails and curl up. This is to trap any pollinating insect inside until released perhaps hours later or even overnight. Because of their small size and drab colouring they are difficult to find. This pair was discovered while I was hunting Sun Orchids. Lucky me! These li’l quackers were photographed in the wild, along the Ocean Drive Fire Trail in the Queen’s Lake Nature Reserve , at North Haven, NSW, Australia, on a beautifully overcast autumn afternoon. Visit my Aussie Wildflower collection in my BubbleSite for more native orchidian delights. Fuji S9600: Super Macro, f/5.6 @ 1/52sec, Manual focus, Tripod, Timer. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. UPDATE: 31-08-08 / I have just printed this on Canon Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss Satin and it came up a treat! UPDATE: 11-7-09 / This pair of ducks was awarded 3rd Place in the Australian Native Plants Group’s Native Terrestrial Orchids Challenge. Enjoy! WILDFLOWERS: ORCHIDS / (Click the links!) • This striking portrait profile of an Australian Larus novaehollandiae (Silver Gull) was photographed along the breakwater at North Haven , NSW, Australia, on a winter afternoon. I made the shot in 2006 using my old workhorse the Fuji S5500 4Mp at high resolution jpg and with the colour setting to Chrome which emulates Fuji Velvia film. The bird allowed me to get very close which helped greatly in obtaining the lovely detail and better control over the whites. Fuji S5500: 1/1000sec @ f/8, ISO 100, hand held. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3 for very minimal tweaking. Visit the Aussie Birds collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more fine feathered friends. UPDATE: 6-11-09 / My handsome Gull made it to the TOP TEN in the Alphabet Soup Group’s Best of G Challenge. UPDATE: 14-11-09 / Handsome Johnathan has been FEATURED in the Colour and Light and North Coast Photographic Forum Groups. Enjoy! AUSSIE BIRDS – The Gull Family / (Click the links!) • Southwest Harbor, at the mouth of Somes Sound in Acadia National Park, offers a protected haven for a large fleet of pleasure boats and ready access to the Gulf of Maine and the archipelago of islands to the south and west. In this image, the harbor is filled by the late afternoon sun and the vestiges of a recent thunder storm lingering in the sky.

  • Sometimes being an early bird pays off, as was the case when I went to photograph the lighthouse in Grand Haven, Michigan. As the sun came up, the clouds seems to magically part and create beautiful colors and such special sun rays that danced across the sky and silhouetted the stately lighthouse structure and elevated walkway. It was a real pleasure to behold!

  • The 18th century Castle Bridge over the River Crana, Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland, late summer. / Fujifilm finepix s9600 / Slight amounts of levels, curves and usm. I was tempted to desaturate a bit, but the grass really was this green.

  • Grand Haven, Michigan. It was a cold and slippery walk out to the end of the pier, but seeing the icy side of the outer lighthouse made the effort worthwhile.

  • I went in search of this photo based on a painting by Lorusmaver. / Lorus & I collaborate on images. / Lorus often paints interpretations from my photos. Here the roles were reversed, Lorus had produced this fine artwork & it inspired me to search for the view. I decided on this view from the other side of the breakwater, being early morning the light was better & the remains of trawler nets was more impressive cuckmere Haven / southdowns / sussex panasonic fz50

  • I decided to enter the Birdhouse contest so this photo was done exclusively for Backyard Photography and birdhouses. So out in my I drag my camera again…..Framed it out a wee bit and overflowed the greenery. Razzle dazzle a few little stars and there you have it…. Hope you enjoy it.

  • Featured in Happy Haven Photography , October 15th, 2009 / Featured in Amazing Orton Effect , December 4th, 2009 Oughterard is one of the most touristic villages in Connemara, co. Galway, Ireland. Very authentic and picturesque and simply gorgeous. The river Owenriff is passing through the entire village, it actually divides it in two, a north and a south side. Here you find a nice spot at that river.
