“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked. / “Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” / “How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice. / “You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.” / Alice didn’t think that proved it at all: however, she went on: “And how do you know that you’re mad?” / “To begin with,” said the Cat, “a dog’s not mad. You grant that?” / “I suppose so,” said Alice. / “Well, then,” the Cat went on, “you see a dog growls when it’s angry, and wags its tail when it’s pleased. Now I growl when I’m pleased, and wag my tail when I’m angry. Therefore I’m mad.” / “I call it purring, not growling,” said Alice. / “Call it what you like,” said the Cat The Cheshire Cat explains his logic on why he thinks he is mad by comparing himself to another animal – a dog. To him, all animals are, well, animals. Thus they all should be judged by the same standard. If a dog growls when it is angry and wags its tail while happy, then all animals should behave in the same way. However, as a cat, he does the opposite; therefore he must be mad, as he obviously does not conform to what he defines as normal behavior. But clever little Alice responds by stating, “I call it purring, not growling.” In essence, she is telling the cat that according to her belief system, his behavior is normal. This is because in her culture, dogs and cats are animals, yet they are different; unique. They cannot be compared. The Cheshire Cat, seeing things only from his point of view, answers tersely, “Call it what you like.” This is not surprising as within each society or culture, each member has constructed a definition based upon his or her own ‘particular and personal reality’; it becomes a standard that they apply to themselves and to others. In my opinion, the notion of madness is not a ‘concrete concept’, but a ‘subjective perception’. The exchange between the Cheshire Cat and Alice demonstrates that madness is a judgment derived from one’s own understanding, not anyone else’s. So if I am indeed mad, then it is a madness of my own making; defined by my own beliefs of what I perceive madness to be. Or is it? Is the definition I use to make this determination my own, or one I have taken from the society in which I live? If I told you I were mad, what would you think? What is madness to you? I doubt your perception equals mine. So then, why does it matter? Why should I care what you think? Especially when it comes to deciding whether or not I am a sane and sound member of society. That how I act or think should be judged by standards and morals upon which no one can agree. That what I say or do should be held accountable to what someone else thinks is right. That I should accept your derision of me based on a subjective perception rather than a concrete concept. / / Why should I think myself ‘mad’ when I cannot conform to a belief system that is not my own nor anyone can clearly define. I don’t think I should. Do you?

  • “If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?” – from Alice and Wonderland

In Bourke I ‘produced’ my version of “Alice in Wonderland”, using a few unrelated Walt Disney songs to enhance the show. / / I had been determined to emulate all the things that my primary school teacher, in Gouda had done. / / In his production of De Wonderbloem (The magic flower), I had had a minor role. I think I was ‘leader’ of the little folk or something. / / It was nice to make contact with the (then) girl who had had a major singing role, via www.Schoolbank.nl She was the daughter of a local minister and was involved with the teaching of music, at a tertiary level, in Rotterdam. ** /

A flock of Corellas have moved in at work, there goes our serene workplace and most likely our plants. They are totally mad, while I’ve been constructing a rock retaining wall, they take off in a burst of noise and feathers{can’t count how many times I’ve dropped a rock in fright} Then they come straight back in the same style ,hanging upside down out of the trees, shredding the palm fronds. Then they get on the ground and have birdie punch ups. They do what corellas do best, destroy, deafen you and crack you up.I did’nt realise what they were doing in this shot, until I got home and put it up on the puter. The one getting his foot bitten started the blue!!!!

  • “The Mad Hatter” / 2005 / Medium: Oils / Airbrush / Ink / / 3ft X 4ft on Canvas. – This painting was painted between the months of September – December of 2005. The title of this painting comes from the character in this hit classic, “Alice in Wonderland.” I was trying to go along on the themes of that movie. The image in the center is made up of grapes, cherries, apples, a banana, a pair, nudes, a squid, a carrot, and two elephant heads. Together, this image makes a loose image of the Mad Hatter. The blobs on the border of this canvas, is made up of dried goo (gesso) and creates such a great texture. One some of these blobs have small drawings, such as the caterpillar modeled after the caterpillar in the movie. / This painting has received lots of feedback. I had it displayed in some of the local bars, and while it was up had many offers. At the time, I did not want to sell the piece, but its time to make room for new works, and sell the old. So it is now for sale. This piece is an original. There are no prints or copies. My asking price for this work is $ 6,300.00 But I will take offers. You can place an offer or request to see more pictures of this image, by contacting me via e-mail at jhaverty@student.umass.edu Thanks for looking! / John Haverty
