A shot for an assessment where we went to a recycling centre and had to find materials to shoot. I decided to do something vaguely fashion-ish, and found these little circle pieces of plastic, turned them into that hat with the help of superglue and staples, made the necklace out of twine and these cool little beads i found there, and found those diamond thingies which i used as a mobile for the background. I wanted a kind of old-school 70’s look, because the hat reminds me of that whole disco-era style. I shot this on a Large-Format camera, and used the old trick of putting a piece of stocking over the lens which gave the photo a nice soft-focus look, which is something completely different to what I’d usually do. The result being a nice complexion on her skin and making the photo look as though it was shot 30 years ago. She kinda looks like Marcia Hines or Donna Summer which is kinda cool.

This photo represents individualism, an increasingly present phenomenon in our societies, resulting from many factors of which: materialism, globalization, capitalism, the break down of the family… / Every person wants to rely on her self and provide for herself and be self sufficient. Bearing the existence of the other is getting harder and harder. / In fact, individualism is the social outlook that stresses independence and self-reliance. Individualists promote “the exercise of one’s goals and desires, while opposing external interference upon one’s choices, whether by society, or any other group or institution” (Wikipedia). The ladder in the photo, which represents an external connection with the world, is cut out. This leaves no room for any external interference. Moreover, the pause of the girl shows how she is closed on herself and she is turning away from the ladder, rejecting any outside contact. / She is holding a sunflower very carefully, she owns it, and it is her own sun, her inner light. The sunflower represents her goals and desires, to which she is much attached; hence the name of the picture “Mine”. However, I would like to say that individualism leads to the extinction of the species. Collectivism is the essence of life and we should work on preserving it and appreciating it.
