A Celebration of Motherhood and the Devine / I drew this work when my son was quite young (he is now 16-2008) / I was experimenting with different patterns and pen work, so it is quite sketchy. / It kind of evolved into something that looks Medieval somehow. / The Hare is one of my magical creatures that I feel familiar with- Hares, Bears and Cats. 1 sale to date- Art Card TOP TEN PLACING IN CHALLENGE CAFE “MOTHERS”

The Bateleur Eagle The Bateleur occurs throughout the savanna and open woodland regions of Africa south of the Sahara. In South Africa, the species once graced the skies of the Transkei, the Eastern Cape, the Karoo and the south Western Cape but sightings in these areas are no longer common. The Bateleur eagle eats carrion, reptiles, and small mammals like rats, / hedgehogs, squirrels or young hares. When attacking snakes, the bird raises its crest and spreads its wings. This, together with long, scaly legs, ensures that, should the snake strike, it will hit either feather or scales, neither of which will pass venom into the bird’s blood stream. The voice of the Bateleur eagle is quite distinctive. The most frequent consists of short repeated barks ‘kau-kau-kau’, followed by one or two long shouts of ‘koaagh’. In the wild this call is made while perched. Its scream of anger is completely different. 2006 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In the lowveld wildlife reserves, where the Bateleur probably occurs at maximum density in an ideal habitat, it is quite numerous. Outside of protected areas, the Bateleur is vulnerable to poisoned bait. The birds have been eradicated from virtually all South African farmland due to indiscriminate attempts to control jackal.
RB’s challenge “Substance of things not seen” inspired many questions of how to convey and/or observe what we cannot see, let alone create a piece of art. / Then, while listening to our CD player shuffle, this song played…Colors of the Wind / You think you own whatever land you land on / Earth is just a dead thing you can claim / But I know every rock and tree and creature / Has a life, has a spirit, has a name / You think the only people who are people / Are the people who look and think like you / But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger / You learn things you never knew / You never knew / Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? / Or ask the grinning bobcat why he grinned / Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains? / Can you paint with all the colors of the wind? / Can you paint with all the colors of the wind? / Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest / Come taste the sun-sweet berries of the earth / Come roll in all the riches all around you / And for once never wonder what they’re worth / The rainstorm and the river are my brothers / And the heron and the otter are my friends / And we are all connected to each other / In a circle in a hoop that never ends / Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? / or let the eagle tell you where hes been / can you sing with all the voices of the mountain / can you paint with all the colors of the wind / can you paint with all the colors of the wind / How high does the sycamore grow / If you cut it down, then you’ll never know / And you’ll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon / For whether we are white or copper – skinned / We just sing with all the voices of the mountain / Need to paint with all the colors of the wind / You can own the earth and still / All you’ll own is earth until / You can paint with all colors of the wind. Not leaving well enough alone, I ventured into googling and found an amazing photograph (hven.swarthmore.edu) of a Wind Bubble and began searching more of the Stellar Winds ~ this all seemed to fit, so I sketched a female figure being blown by the wind and layered it atop the Wind Bubble, editing a little more with the Redfield fractilius plug-in to bring the force of the wind alive with evidence of its power, though unseen… “Thought is the Wind, knowledge the sail, and mankind the vessel. ” August Hare

Yule / Winter Solstice Yule is the Celtic Festival of the birth of the sun. Winter Solstice is the shortest day and the longest night, but from this day forward the light will grow rather than diminish and the year turns once again towards the Waxing half of the year. In the darkest of nights there is still the silver star of hope and a promise of regeneration. The traditiona of bringing in the Holly,Ivy and Mistletoe at this time of the year is to symbolise that although the land looks cold and dead, life still persisits and the green of Spring and Summer will come again with the stregnthening of the Sun.
Painting inspired by a glimpse of a hare in the hazy morning sun.
I did this piece for the “Mid-Autumn Festival” (also known as the “moon festival”). The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar (usually around mid- or late-September in the Gregorian calendar), that is September 14, this year. Chinese celebrates this festival by gathering family members together for a big meal, we have very beautiful lanterns (children love them), we have moon cakes and a lot of fruit while we gaze at the nice and round moon with our loved ones.
This iconic image of a black hare running across a moonlit sky against a background of birch trees is my signature image.
This painting is dedicated to fellow Redbubble Artist Helena Nelson-Reed for in truth it would not have come about but for her suggestion and comments allso its in thanks for the friendship and support she has shown me and as i have said befor and will keep doing so i greatly admire her work and recomend anyone who does not know her work to take time and visit her gallery Run fast run free you bound / in the wind showing such greate flare / always wary with eyes roving / man is about with trap and snare / fox as well ready to bound / as you dance and prance / nare a care in the world / on hind legs you stand / ready to box male to male / for the right to mate / you bring a smile to my face / as in springs first bloom / you leap high to the sky / mad as a march hare / i think not just sheer joy / at the start of a new summers day
Bunny is usually a term used to describe a rabbit or hare. The term is a diminutive of “bun”, a word of Scottish origin that in the 16th and 17th centuries was a pet name for rabbits, squirrels and sometimes young women or children. Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae. They are sometimes affectionately known as bunnies or bunny rabbits, especially by children. There are seven different genera in the family classified as rabbits, including the European Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), cottontail rabbits (genus Sylvilagus; 13 species), and the Amami Rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi, an endangered species on Amami Oshima, Japan).Rabbits are clearly distinguished from the related hares in that rabbits are altricial, born blind and hairless; many also live underground in burrows or warrens. Indoor pet rabbit can live 6-12 years, they can even become good friends with cats and dogs.

I lay in a dry ditch, camera at the ready as this Hare hopped past me. He hadn’t seen me, hadn’t smelt me, and didn’t know I was even there, he spent ages with his back to me, just nibbling at the sweet grass. The sun shone relentlessly on me and I hardly dared to breath. He was close, really close and the first click of the camera’s shutter was going to scare him away. The smallest movement from me caught his attention, was I a fox? should he run? maybe if he just kept still the danger would pass. Trying to get the camera to focus on him and not the blades of grass between us was tricky, at times like this you wish you’d paid the extra money and bought a quieter lens. Now or never…click… like a clap of thunder the shutter did it’s thing and he bolted for safety. Leaving me lying in a ditch on the edge of those summer meadows, alone again.
