I have taken this moon with a 60 to 300mm Sigma and a 2X converter. But it was still to far away, so I cropped the image and increased it in Paintshop! I also HDR’d it to bring out more detail. This is for the bordem competition on the subject of dust! Framed Print /

Featured in the European Everyday Life group, 17th December, 2008. / Featured in the Nautical group, 16th December, 2008. Located near Portesham village in Dorset, England, on the highest point of the Blackdown area is Hardy’s Monument. There are excellent views of the Dorset coast from this location. / This is not a memorial to the poet Thomas Hardy – it is to Vice Admiral, Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769 – 1839). Hardy lived in the nearby village of Portesham. During the battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Hardy served as Lord Nelson’s flag captain. / The monument is 72 feet high.
In a solitude of the sea / Deep from human vanity, / And the Pride of Life that planned her, stilly couches she. Steel chambers, late the pyres / Of her salamandrine fires, / Cold currents thrid, and turn to rhythmic tidal lyres. Over the mirrors meant / To glass the opulent / The sea-worm crawls—grotesque, slimed, dumb, indifferent. Jewels in joy designed / To ravish the sensuous mind / Lie lightless, all their sparkles bleared and black and blind. Dim moon-eyed fishes near / Gaze at the gilded gear / And query: “What does this vaingloriousness down here?”. . . Well: while was fashioning / This creature of cleaving wing, / The Immanent Will that stirs and urges everything Prepared a sinister mate / For her - so gaily great - / A Shape of Ice, for the time fat and dissociate. And as the smart ship grew / In stature, grace, and hue / In shadowy silent distance grew the Iceberg too. Alien they seemed to be: / No mortal eye could see / The intimate welding of their later history. Or sign that they were bent / By paths coincident / On being anon twin halves of one August event, Till the Spinner of the Years / Said “Now!” And each one hears, / And consummation comes, and jars two hemispheres. Poem by Thomas Hardy In memory of them all Music – Titanic / James Horner – Hymn To The Sea Painting in acrylics 25th December 2008

i ‘Okika Honohono / Lovely Orchids blooming at Bully and Kappy’s home / Hana Maui Hawai’i There are many wonderful websites with information on Orchids. There are many groups, clubs and societies and over 20,000 varieties. Many orchids have succulent characteristics. They store water and nutrients in pseudobulbs, leaves and/or other parts of their anatomy. Fresh orchids and other tropical flowers create a unique tropical atmosphere perfect for a traditional or modern wedding theme here on Maui and are very beautiful woven into Haku Lei. Hardy terrestrial orchids include some the rarest & showiest perennials for the garden. These deciduous plants are indigenous to the temperate zones Eurasia and North America. They require woodland conditions for cultivation, preferring shade to part-shade and rich, well-draining soil; somewhat moist. Hardy orchids bloom at 3 – 6 years of age, depending upon the species. As in Bathsheba Everdene, from Thomas Hardy’s “Far from the Madding Crowd”...within a short time of arriving at her aunt’s house, Bathsheba has the neighbouring young men at her feet…independent, beautiful and intelligent, she rises quickly when she inherits her uncle’s farm, then shocks everyone by deciding to manage it herself…..her three suitors are each determined to marry her.. / “The book (which I have read a zillion times), has been described as an early piece of feminist literature, since it features an independent woman with the courage to defy convention by running a farm herself. Although Bathsheba’s passionate nature leads her into serious errors of judgment, Hardy endows her with sufficient resilience, intelligence, and good luck to overcome her youthful folly”.wiki Watercolour on Arches Not Paper / Katharine / Sylvia / The Riddle / Illusion / The Wish / Virtue / The Party / The Beauty / The Star / The Night / The Temptation / The Quiet / The Plea / Le Maquillage
When exactly nine years had passed since this gracious being appeared to me, as I have described, it happened that on the last day of this intervening period this marvel appeared before me again, dressed in purest white, walking between two other women of distinguished bearing, both older than herself. As they walked down the street she turned her eyes toward me where I stood in fear and trembling, and with her ineffable courtesy, which is now rewarded in eternal life, she greeted me; and such was the virtue of her greeting that I seemed to experience the height of bliss. It was exactly the ninth hour of day when she gave me her sweet greeting. As this was the first time she had ever spoken to me, I was filled with such joy that, my senses reeling, I had to withdraw from the sight of others. So I returned to the loneliness of my room and began to think about this gracious person. Dante (La Vita Nuova III) Dante first met Beatrice when he was nine and she was a year younger…he was entranced with her, but they did not meet again until nine years later..he went home and wrote what is considered to be one of the worlds greatest romantic poems, “La Vita Nuova”... many painters have recorded their meeting on the bridge…however there is only one (presumed) portrait of her…I discovered it after I painted this and there is no resemblance.. / Dante thought her angelic…I hope you think the same of my Beatrice...
