Dead tree in desolate environment.
On a forgotten beach strew with crumbling shells and other trinkets of the sea, one worn stone pillar stands strong against the endless tides. Clinging to its crown is a twin trunked tree, its few roots gripping, vise-like, to the rock beneath, its two trunks entwined, their branches in an embrace for as long as they live. They have come this far, through these hardships and trials. They shall weather out our years as one. Abel Tazman National Park, New Zealand / Pentax ME / 100ASA 35mm colour film
This pic was taken in Oaxaca this child was living on the steps of the court house in the Zocolo her father was missing presumed dead. Her mother made the baskets to sell to survive.

Mountain farmers in Tyrol, Austria.
Tezz is a homeless bloke who used to haunt the bottom end of the city, from Martin Place down towards the Quay, sleeping rough despite offers of accomodation from various charities. Tezz didn’t care much for charity. I chatted to Tezz for an hour or so, taking his picture with his permission. When I left I offered him $20. He declined.
The light is where you choose to see it… The original “path” was far from luminous with hope. It was scary and creepy. I chose to see my path in a different way, and now I can look towards light and joy. Finished in 3rd position of Top Ten in the Landscapes from the Inverted World challenge of the Inverted World Group on July 11, 2009

Shot from a moving car in El Salvador. Just a random, sweet shot. Seems there’s a lot going on there.
Port Arthur prison block, Tasmania. One of the first things that struck me whilst touring the prison was the biting wind, even though it was a summer day. The cell blocks had open windows with only bars across them. It beggars belief that anyone could survive in there in winter! Escape was virtually impossible but some prisoners were not discouraged by this, and tried to escape. Martin Cash successfully escaped along with two others. One of the most infamous incidents, simply for its bizarreness, was the escape attempt of one George “Billy” Hunt. Hunt disguised himself using a kangaroo hide and tried to flee across the Neck, but the half-starved guards on duty tried to shoot him to supplement their meagre rations. When he noticed them sighting him up, Hunt threw off his disguise and surrendered, subsequently receiving 150 lashes. As I stepped out of the block on a fairly bright summer day, the sky darkened, the wind increased, and it began to rain. This atmosphere, that I hope that I have captured here, added to how I felt regarding the misery, hardship, and deprivation, that the convicts had to endure Link Canon 40D 18-55 IS tonemapped
When we think of childhood, we think of carefree days playing with out friends, our toys and having a safe place where we are cared for. Spare a thought for those whose childhood is anything but what I have described, as in the case of this little boy who takes care of his sister when his mother is working. When we feel compassion in our heart, it is heard by God and it vibrates throughout the universe, so spare a moment to feel your compassion for all those litte children out there whose childhood is not bliss, whose stomachs are not full and whose thirst is never quenched. So that our combined compassionate voice may echo through universes and galaxies to be heard by God. So be it. /
These mothers have their children sitting on the side of the field while they toil picking beans, The heat is sweltering and yet their children do not complain.
This photograph of a grandmother and her two grandchildren reflect / the pain, struggle, unbearable hardship and grieving that characterize / most elders in African villages. Although, I traveled to Africa about twenty-five years ago, the burden on women through the generations / were etched in the many lines of their face reflecting a lifetime of sorrow and loss. Looking at these photos has evoked memories of / beautiful children with hopeful faces that faded over the years as a / consequence of emotional and physical burdens too heavy to carry / for any sentient soul. In a continent of 900 million people, women / account for half of the world’s population and half of its talent. The costs of not developing this talent are enormous. The inclusion of women in the male dominated African economy is essential for nations to embrace the global economy while achieving shared growth at home. / A group, 10,000 Women invest in education for women and believe / their actions may have the highest social and economic return / of any investment, when one considers the range of income and health / outcomes for such women and their families. Investing in girls’ / education leads to increased wages for individuals as well as faster / economic growth for a country. The organization pairs volunteer / sponsors to train women to read, write and learn tasks that can / generate income for their villages and families. The poor and / hopeless female villagers feel empowered and hopefully will not / suffer the despair reflected on the face of the elderly woman in / this photo who is responsible for the care of her grandchildren after their mother died of Malaria, one of the diseases that rob children of the care of their maternal and often paternal parent. In this case, the father worked to feed the family, but his efforts were inadequate given the resources he had to sustain their lives. He did not have enough / money to send his children to school, a scenario too often seen in Africa that creates the vicious cycle or poverty and death. Getta Rao Gupta, President of the International Center for Research / on Women, states that “We know that primary and secondary education for girls is crucial to their ability to shape the course of their lives. But for girls to succeed, the skills they gain in school must match the jobs available in today’s global marketplace. Yet That critical space – when girls transition from school to work – has been invisible to the financial and international development communities… alike and investments to ensure a smooth transition have been limited. More than survive, we want women to thrive.” Melanne Vereer Co-founder and Chair for Vital Voices Global / Partnership reinforces Gupta’s message when she says, “Around the world women leaders are increasingly driving economic, political and social progress. They are the catalysts of change of our time. We know from a growing body of research—from the World Bank to the World Economic Forum—that investments in women’s education and training pay significant dividends for society. Without women’s full participation, no country can prosper, but in order to tap their potential, women need the tools for effective leadership. There is no better investment for our world.” Reading many stories of women whose lives have changed dramatically / with the help of advocates to train them is a very positive step when / the problems facing African families seem to be / too overwhelming to surmount.
Victims of Alzheimer’s disease have to live in a growing maze of confusion every single day of their lives. Only the most recent memories are affected at the beginning, with the disease slowly working its way back to the older ones, until the victim finally loses her own identity and that of her surroundings… One day you will go out of the house and get a sinking feeling when you find yourself looking for that ironing board at the local playground. This shot was made as a tribute to my grandmother who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease during the last 15 years of her life, and had to go through all of these stages. It’s also an homage to my grandfather who took care of her lovingly and patiently for as long as he could, and finally decided to seek long term care for her when he turned 77 and it all became too much for him. I wanted my mom to be my model in this shot but I couldn’t get hold of her on that day, so I decided to take my sister instead. She graciously accepted to model for me and we drove to the local playground. Once there, she put on a bathrobe with big fuzzy slippers, mussed her hair, grabbed the iron that I had brought as a prop, and tried her best to look lost and confused… I had to age her face and hair considerably in Photoshop because she’s only 43 and didn’t really look the part.
