Taken at South Shields, the Groyne Lighthouse is a well known landmark and the lighthouses in the distance mark the entrrance to the Tyne Docks. / It was very windy and the sand was shifting and a lovely golden colour, it was a glorious day, well any day you can spend at the beach is glorious :-)

This picture was taken on March 8, 2008; a very rainy foggy day in Sambro, NS. This was fitting weather for a small fishing community remembering their five friends, neighbours and family members lost at sea 20 years ago. On March 8th, 1988 the fishing boat “Bonnie Lou II” was lost at sea and the five fisherman on board were never found. Had the men survived the storm the sight of this lighthouse, which stands at the entrance to Sambro, would have welcomed them home.

On a wet evening in Whitby this long exposure manages to smooth out the water and soften the detail in the sky. I have converted this to black and white but it wouldn’t have made much difference if I hadn’t. This long-exposure captured the mood of the evening well. Because of the weather conditions the town was deserted and quiet. The rain had reduced visibility and the only thing that can be seen on the horizon is the light from a distant boat which had been accentuated by the long-expsoure.

Another in the Masters series. / This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895. I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb. I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.

This image was taken just after the first I posted and you can now see the ship a little clearer but still silhouetted against the fast rising sun. We all stood in awe watching this scene and wondering what this ship would look like as it then disappeared behind Nobby’s Lighthouse and reappeared on the other side of the breakwall before coming into harbour … wait for more!! / / /

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Bonnet Island Lighthouse at Hells Gate Macquarie Harbour, West Coast Tasmania, Australia. The narrow 120 metre entrance to the huge Macquarie Harbour was discovered in 1815. Within a year, timber cutters moved in. Navigating the narrow entrance and its sandbar was an essential hazard in getting the timber to Hobart. / A signal station was erected near Cape Sorell in 1822 to indicate conditions entering the harbour. It was manned by convicts from the newly established penal settlement at Sarah Island. / The conditions were so bad at the new Sarah Island that the convicts named the entrance to the harbour Hells Gate. Other records indicate the name was used due to the enormous rush of the tides through the entrance to the harbour which can create very dangerous conditions. / In 1891, a light was exhibited from two white six sided wooden towers, one on the western side of Entrance Island, and the other on Bonnet Island. Also, a breakwater was constructed at Hells Gate to check the sandbar, and in 1899 a light was constructed a Cape Sorell. / The Strahan Marine Board purchased a dredge in 1909 and continued to improve the entrance so that many large vessels could enter. / The Entrance Light was powered by gas until 1977, when solar panels and batteries took over. / The weatherboard cladding was renewed in 1989. This is an old aircraft gun sitting on the harbour wall in Scarborough in North Yorkshire, almost protecting the benches as it once protected the harbour. Beyond is the lighthouse, Scarborough seafront rising towards the town and the Scarborough Belle’s sculpture diving into the gathering storm clouds. Best viewed large Converted into infrared in PSP
