I posted a piece on how to do t-shirts a while ago. I deleted it when I realised that a lot of my ideas were wrong, but I think that I can offer some useful advice this time. The template posted here at RB is what I’m using now. If you haven’t worked with it before the simple way to eliminate the white rectangle and red lines is to click on Select – top left – then All, then go to Edit and Cut. That wipes everything off. I have saved the template in that fashion now. I had a lot of trouble with fonts. Everywhere I looked on the net I found instructions on how fonts could be added to the Gimp menu and I couldn’t make any of them work. My final solution was: a – make sure every font I wanted was loaded into my Windows font folder; / b – uninstall Gimp and the GTK Runtime Environment which it requires; / c – reload the latest versions of each, available here. Maybe I just got lucky, but it worked. All fonts now available. I had created another problem for myself by creating my own template, but this wasn’t an issue until recently when RB changed the production method for the T’s. Effectively I had put all my messages on a white background rather than a clear background. / I found the answer on this page, which gives instructions on how to make any colour transparent in Gimp. If you’re starting from scratch in Gimp and want to do a text T, it’s very simple (he said, having banged his head long and hard over this problem). Once you have the template open and prepared as I described earlier, click the bold T (for Text) on the control panel. This will open a box which will show options like fonts, colour – click on each to display the full range – size of text, and alignment. Click on the point of the template where you want the words to appear. This will open a small window – as you type, the words will appear here and also on the template. The template display will create a yellow boundary around your words. I find it easiest to start in the top left corner and then move the text to where I want it by clicking on the four-arrow icon. This should turn your yellow boundary to white, and the text will move as you desire. Hope this helps. PS: I’ve just used the colour to clear technique to create a negative version of my Amaze T shirt, Amaze T2. ADDENDUM: I posted this piece, Programs I Use, in the forums some time ago. I’ll link to it here for your further consideration.

2 Feb 07 was the launch day of RedBubble.com! Happy Birthday RedBubble! It’s been an incredibly busy year – thanks to all for your support and patience as we continue to build RedBubble. For me personally the most heartening thing over the last year has been the myriad of individual stories we hear in the RedBubble office. People selling their art for the first time. People rediscovering their creative passion. People forming new friendships. When we launched RedBubble on 2 Feb 07 this is what we wrote: People are inherently creative. Deep down, most of us love to come up with new ideas, express who we are, or take a different perspective on the world around us. This is particularly true of children. Remember chalk on the footpath, crayon on the walls, or a painting stuck proudly to the fridge with a magnet. Kids love stories, they love learning about new things, they ask obvious yet somehow overlooked questions. So why don’t many of us focus on our creative interests as adults? Is there something about the process of growing up that changes us, that convinces us to be serious and sensible? Do we lose the ability to be creative? Or does it just get buried amidst the responsibilities, worries and priorities of adult life? Look closer, though, and you’ll see sparks of creativity in adults everywhere. Since starting our RedBubble journey, we’ve been amazed at how many of our close friends have “confessed” to a secret creative hobby, a little spark of creativity that few else know about. Look at the statistics and the picture is clearer still. Over 2.5 million Australians regularly take part in some sort of creative or cultural activity. Almost 90% do this entirely for free, for the simple enjoyment of it. A fortunate few earn a living from it, but most keep their creative spark alive in their own time and without sharing it with the world. RedBubble was founded with a burning desire to improve this situation. And there are some major social and technological trends helping us out. New technology has placed the creative tools of professionals in the hands of amateurs. With digital cameras, editing software, low cost hardware and more, it is easier than ever to produce your own creative content. Truly, the line between professionals and talented amateurs is blurring. And the traditional distinction between producers on one side and consumers on the other fades away – now you can be both! Another important trend is the way that the internet helps side-step the tyranny of distance and lower the cost of distribution. For a country as huge and remote as Australia, this is life-changing. No longer can you be held hostage by limited product ranges, poor information or high costs. If it’s available elsewhere on the globe, you can find it, read about it and buy it in no time at all. Witness also the growth of MySpace and YouTube, riding an internet-powered wave of self-expression and connectedness. Not to mention the millions of blogs out there. For some it’s about fame and the chance of being discovered. But for many, it’s simply about expressing themselves or hanging out with others who share their interests. Yet, plenty of people have held back from self-expression online. Creative talent does not necessarily go hand in hand with technical savvy. And many people don’t feel comfortable sharing their deeply personal creative work in existing online environments. So we asked ourselves: why isn’t there an online home for creative people? A place where they can belong to a genuine creative community, express their thoughts, get inspired, and collaborate with others? And why shouldn’t they be able to turn their creative passion into real objects for themselves or others, without worrying about hassles like producing, marketing, selling, and shipping? And so the concept for RedBubble was born. And the more we thought about it, the more excited we became about making it a reality. We wrote a business plan, left our jobs, scraped together funding, and built a talented team. Eight months later, here we are with the first version of RedBubble alive and kicking. Where RedBubble goes from here is up to you… One year later and this first RedBubble entry still holds true. With your support our vision is well on the way to being realized. Today RedBubble has a little under 38,000 members and about 600,000 works. The site is international with 33% of our visitors from the US, 31% from Australia, 16% from the UK, 5% from Canada and the balance from Germany, France, The Netherlands, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Italy, Norway, Belgium, Sweden and Israel. When we did the numbers in January our estimate is that RedBubble is the second fastest growing arts site on the Internet. And perhaps the most exciting thing is that year one was about learning how to walk (well fell over a lot). A year later and we’ve worked out how to walk – so 2008 should be an even more productive year for the evolution of RedBubble! Justin and I will post more on the 2008 planning in the next week. - Peter P.S. I was just looking at my public profile page here on redbubble and was thinking about how I have changed since I had written about myself (I think i need to update it). Since I have been on redbubble I have come on leaps and bounds not just in my photography but also as a person, my confidence with life in general has grown. When i first came to rb I saw myself as just a housewife (not that there is anything wrong with that of course) who took pictures of her children and here I am less than a year later and I have put a book together, had 3 images accepted for a book on black and white photography and have just been accepted to do a degree in photography at my local university (I start in September). More importantly though I have made some wonderful (virtual) friends here who inspire me with their work and comments as well as several people who are pushing me forward ‘behind the scenes’ (ie bubblemail). So i just wanted to say a huge thank you to all those who have been a part of this and a huge thanks to those working hard behind the scenes at Redbubble – this is a great community to belong too. I would love to hear from you about what RB has done for you:) Thanks for reading.

Hello! This week RedBubble turned two. So I thought I’d celebrate by asking the Internet how a two year old should behave. This is what I discovered (courtesy of Nicki Heskin). A two year old: - Wants exactly what he wants when he wants it. / - Will not usually give in. / - Everything has to be done just so. / - Likes to give orders. / - Has trouble making decisions; wants to be inside but wants to be outside at the same time. / - Wants to continue doing whatever he is doing no matter what. / - Wants things to always be just the way they have always been; may accept new things but wants to keep the old things too. / - May begin to bite. That all sounds about right. I especially like the biting bit … it should be a fun year! Happy Birthday RedBubble! Peter P.S. From week to week we are enormously encouraged by the e-mails, BubbleMails and other messages we get from folks about how we are helping people re-kindle, celebrate, share and develop their creative passions. Over the last two years it has been our great privilege to be able to share the creative journey with you all. Thank you!

I admire my mother so much and she has just returned from around the world trip at age 76. I have just emailed her a poem I wrote about her and my father (who died at 41 years old) as a present for her birthday. I feel that this is the right time to share this with her. As a tribute to my love and admiration of my Mother and the importance she plays in my life I would like to share the poem again and a few photos of her life with my friends on RedBubble. Happy Birthday to my beautiful mother Joy Rose Slade! Mother Her mind incisive and fast / Her strength a mountain / Courage her middle name and her last / She taught me so much / My mother pragmatic from the start / Me philosophical by heart / When as a child I asked her what I should do? / She said I have given you a good mind, / so think for yourself. Her intellect so penetrating / She bought her books of law / Although she never started / Her mind was insatiable / Always begging for more. / At school in her exams / She was the top 8 in her state / So clarified, so defined, articulate and wise. She was so pretty, her hair so golden / Her features fine / My mothers name is joy / She was the same by nature / She sang to me as a baby / A voice like an angel…even more / She read to me as a child / and taught me the love of words / She drew pretty ladies / and gave me the love of feminine grace / and a passion for art. (Thank you) Her love of my father was passionate and rare / Their charisma together burned on my memory / My father admired and loved her so… / Admiration was the first ingredient of their love / Their IQ was identical and it was high / His inner strength danced with her courage / as his masculine beauty complimented / her feminine grace…so divine. As a young child I witnessed their love / built on passion and respect / My dad held my sensitive heart / in his gentle hand… / My mother shaped my strength / My father taught me nurture / and unconditional love / My mother taught me to stand up / and to spread my creative and intellectual wings / She made me strong enough / so I could be sensitive always. She possessed that rare quality: Courage / My mother was never afraid / to stand up and speak her mind / Conformity was never her mode… / Pioneer, revolutionary was more in line / and gave this to me as a birthright. / She gave me permission to flourish in / my own sunshine and not be afraid to speak / Be different and explore and live true / to my inner voice, my inner knowing… In my early thirties I interviewed her for my / autobiography and my heart swelled with / Pride at the person she was, / the history, the story and the wisdom / she had lived and passed on. / She told me I was the sensitive one / and softness she knew needed / protection and so she challenged me to / strengthen my inside and taught / me that I must look after my inner child (my inner child still dances) My mother encouraged me to pursue an education / To question, to explore, to flourish / To push the boundaries of convention, / To disrupt the wrong and unjust / and to pass on my learning and wisdom / She taught me not to settle for mediocre / and strive and struggle to reach my potential. When she saw my art begin to blossom / and the words explode from my mind as / a teenager she did not try to stop / them or control them… / With pride in her heart she encouraged / me to follow my heart and my dream / She placed no limits or restrictions / on my imagination. Oh that I love her there can be no doubt / She was my role model of woman / and showed me the dynamic / and pure love of a woman for a man / and she chose a beauty in my father. / I admire and I adore her / Inside my heart I know she loves me too / And this is the foundation of my esteem / …a woman of intellect, brilliance and generosity / Joy so beautiful…Joy so wise Although we do not always see eye to eye / We can communicate, challenge and provoke / and reach a better place then we started / We question each other and then we take flight / I am thankful always to my mother she taught / me acceptance of difference encouraged me to / be a freethinker and a creative… / And she taught me the best you can be in life is / kind. I called in to grab my mail at the Post Office today and they handed me a flat box. I didn’t remember ordering anything and I couldn’t see a return address. I mentioned to the man at the PO that I didn’t have a clue what it was. He gave me one of those knowing smiles and I realised with horror that he probably thought I’d ordered some porn or something and was trying to act innocent. I walked out of there with a very red face and was mortified LOL!! When I got into my car I couldn’t help myself and opened the box. / Inside was my very first Book Cover Yay!!!!! I had this big grin from ear to ear then had a thought. I walked back into the Post Office, went up to the man with the knowing smile, held my book up and said. “Well I know what it is now!!” / He looked at the book and looked back at me and said / “Great” in dull tones. / I leaned over and said “Yep, and that’s my Artwork on the cover, my very first Book Cover!!” / Then the three staff that worked there all came over and started congratulating me LOL including the man with the knowing smile and told me how awesome it looked. / I felt so much better that they knew it wasn’t porn!! :)) / And just a little bit proud :) / So…......just wanted to share my Book Cover / They only used half the original image but I don’t mind…. / I’m a little bit excited!!! :)) / Not one to miss out, Ash decided to jump on the table as I was shooting, the mannequin wasn’t having all the limelight… / (Excuse the blur, I was laughing at Ash)

One of the joys of RedBubble is sharing the artistic journey. The book “Nude” is now available (see below) and we are thrilled to launch a collaboration with Stefan Sagmeister, one of the world’s most creative and inspiring designers. Sagmeister is producing a Happy Film that will look at the wellbeing of people around the world. I met Stefan in Oxford and we talked about how RedBubble artists could participate (I love the potential of global art projects). The project is simple, RedBubble artists are asked to rate themselves on a scale from 1-10 (1 being seriously depressed, 10 being overjoyed) and then create a self-portrait expressing that state. Any artistic medium/technique is allowed. Stefan and team will be animating the best of these results into a sequence. The works should use this template, including its 16:9 landscape format. For the animation to work the face needs to essentially fit within the line of the template. Stefan will select works to go into the documentary and it is possible that works will also be exhibited in a New York Gallery. + Prizes. We will be giving away two signed copies of Sagmeister’s amazing book Made You Look. So get the crayons, plasticine, canons, cannons out over the next week and then add your work to the challenge. Nude Revealed (& Breathtaking) After a teasing build-up, the latest RedBubble publication Nude is now available and is quite frankly breathtaking. In the words of one reviewer it highlights the impressive quality of art to be found among Redbubble members.. It was launched on a wet and woolly night, but that didn’t deter the nudists from braving the elements and huddling together to bathe in the afterglow of their handiwork. Bottles were uncorked, goon was quaffed, and literary goodness digested. Some of the most exciting work on RedBubble was entered into challenge from which the final works were chosen. We, and everybody else who has seen the final book, is delighted with the result. To purchase, please email aboutmyorder@redbubble.com with “Nude Book Order” in the title and your postal address in the body. We’ll then request a payment using PayPal. Prices are as below. - AUD$33 / - US$27 / - CAN$30 / - GBP16.50 / - EUR19 / + shipping Melbourne Bubblers can also purchase a copy from the Readings, Carlton Bookshop. Pilgrim

/ / / The Happy Project collaboration with Stefan Sagmeister has been rocking along and we’ve been impressed by the fantastic portraits are being entered. Some of our artists were ridiculously excited about the chance to collaborate with one of the world’s most creative and inspiring designers, so we gave them the opportunity to quiz Stefan on the Happy project and his own attitude to happiness. / Natalie Perkins: Do you consider yourself a designer even when you’re not being paid to solve problems, and if so, how can you separate that from being an “artist” who solves personal/cultural problems? Stefan: Yes, I consider myself a designer at all times, no matter in what kind of project I’m involved in. I went to design school, run a design office and publish most of our pieces in places and media associated with design. My favorite quote about the difference between art and design comes from Donald Judd, who says that “design has to work, art does not.” So the difference is one of functionality, if I design a chair and push it so hard until I can’t sit on it anymore, it ceases to be a chair and becomes a sculpture. And then I can look at it and see if it’s a good sculpture. Soxy Fleming: When you asked for these self portraits did you consider that the act of making them would alter the artists rating of themselves? Stefan: This is a wonderful question and a good point. No I did not consider this but absolutely should have! Ayarti: While the act of designing is something that makes me very happy, I think some of my best work has been done in times of sadness. How important a role have your feelings played in the production of quality work? Stefan: I myself, when I am down, am normally not good at any work, including design work. The very, very few times in my life when I experienced something like depression, I really was no good to nobody, including myself. I was sad in the beginning of this year about the breakup of a very long relationship, and I consequently worked my ass off, but this was less a function of the sadness itself and more one of my regular coping mechanisms. sjem: Has architecture (or any man made environment) ever played an important role in your own happiness? Stefan: Yes. Peter Zumthor’s Spa in Vals, Switzerland elevated my mood into A levels, Saarinnen’s Arch in St. Louis captured me completely, I now watch the sun rise every morning over the New York skyline from my roof on 14th Street which turns out to be a exhilarating way to start the day. I also remember being a little high after a small water plane trip starting from Rose Bay over Sydney. Of course nature plays a role in all these example (the spa would be much weaker if it would not be overlooking a particular rough parts of the Alps, etc), but not one of the examples would have touched me if it would have been for the man made part. Paul McClintock: Do you intend for the film to make people happy? Stefan: That would be the ultimate goal. But I am very, very aware how difficult this will be to achieve. Brettus: I once heard you talk about how important making lists has been in your life. Do you think your lists have helped in bringing you happiness, and what’s the best list you’ve ever made? Stefan: The best list I’ve ever made was likely the “Things I have learned in my Life” list, not only did it create clarity for myself but it allowed us to create all sorts of projects from it. But I’ve recently met up with Tony Buzan, the inventor of the Mindmaps, and have to agree with him that they are, because they work so much more naturally, in sync with our brain, superior to lists in almost all cases. / / / / / There are 12 days left to get your entries in for the Happy Challenge. Stefan will be selecting self portraits from the challenge for inclusion in his up and coming film so please make sure you use the template when preparing your artworks. Good luck! / / If you’re on Twitter, please feel free to share this interview.
final piece Damien posted a journal...
final piece Damien posted a journal detailing the process for his entry into the happy challenge. So, being the bandwagon type – I thought I’d do what he did. I realised I’ve still got all my working files – I can actually go back and piece them together into a little animation. So here it is. / (It might take a moment to load, as it is about 2mb – but unless you’re on some 14.4k modem, you should be fine.) Obviously I didn’t save it every five seconds, so this will only have major iterations. This was done fairly straight forward. I always tend to work on sections when I’m painting (getting the detail for one area before moving on to the next) but I normally work in layers and go back and forth between them. With this one, I pretty much painted on a single layer (with a few exceptions – mostly being hair). It was basically a matter of getting the shape down, then refining the details… and repeating. When I’m painting, I use the colour picker frequently. So I’ve mapped it to my wacom. This allows me to pick up the colour from the canvas quickly and push it around, and then switch to another colour (again, taking it directly from the canvas) and go back and forth and blend colours efficiently. If you were to watch me do this, you might even miss that I’m doing it at all. At first I started off using a digital oil bush, but found that it wasn’t fast enough and I decided to stick with the airbrush tool (modified a little to suit my purposes) It’s basically flat colour that is applied at about 25% transparency with a low flow rate. When I’m working between light colours and dark colours, with the colour picker and airbrush tool, I can create gradients without ever having to stop and think about how I’m going to do it. I just put down the two extremes and gradually blend them together. I use a large brush to create the basic shape, and as I refine the details I’ll gradually shrink the brush and zoom in closer until I’m working at up to 400%. Shadows and highlights are pretty important. Shadows will create depth and highlights will bring the image forward (or something along those lines). All I know is after you add shadows and highlights, your previous version will look flat and boring in comparison. Another thing I focused on, that I think helps a lot, is texture. I spent some time detailing inconsistencies in the skin, adding red spots (pores and/or freckles) and some sickly yellow in parts. I’m discovering that our skin is a whole myriad of colours at times… so simple pink flesh won’t do. There are greens, browns, reds and yellows in there. Even after hours of pushing colours around, I decided I wasn’t happy with the overall tone so I took the whole thing into photoshop to tweak the it by pushing the vibrancy and desaturating it and upping the contrast until I was happy. Also, I added a noise layer to further enhance the tone. Hair is simple and quick to do. But surprisingly hard to perfect. You might notice the beard is pretty much finished within the first couple of frames here. It took maybe two or three minutes to get that almost complete. Although, as always, I came back later and spent a while adding stray hairs all over the place. So there. I can’t think of anything else to add just now. Perhaps I will write more if I think of something. Let me know if this has been illuminating, or just boring. Any questions?

After consultation with Stefan Sagmeister we now have four winners of signed copies of his book “Made You Look” from the Happy Challenge. Before naming names, I want to say what a pleasing project this is. I know it was difficult for many to fit things to the template but the overall result was that we got a wonderful look behind the pencil, paintbrush, camera. Stefan commented on how remarkable the entries were and the overall impact was startling. For me it was a simple delight to see how so many of you see yourselves. And I thank you for your courage. I wish we had more books to give away. But all the entries will be heading to New York where Stefan will be animating them for inclusion in his Happy film. Now … any of you who have anything to do with movies know that filmmaking can be a lengthy process. We will let you know when it is done but unless you have VERY, VERY, VERY big lungs do not hold your breath. The following entries get a book. Paul McClintock’s 3.14159 / ‘ Natalie Perkins’ five / Naf4d’s 5 / and Karin Taylor’s affirmation / There really are too many other remarkable images to try and pick out any for specific mention. But please feel free to post your favourite (maybe even yours with a comment) in the thread below. Pilgrim

This past weekend we experienced the most lovely and temperate weather. I decided to take Malcolm out to play. Of course I have to take my camera and my tripod. I am gathering up my stuff and Malcolm is growing impatient. “C’mon Mom! Let’s go! Let’s go!” he insists. “I’m coming Malcolm,” I tell him. “Hold on.” Finally I get my stuff together and as I open the door I tell him, “You must learn patience Malcolm. It only took about 3 minutes for me to get ready.” “Yeah,” he says. “But it was the longest 3 minutes of my life!” Ah, to be age 4 years again. :-) My beautiful Obvious Child

I used to wish for a lot of things…especially when the new year arrived. I set goals, made plans, wished…but never really accomplished much of it. I guess you could say…although those dreams were implanted in my heart…and I had full intensions of succeeding…life just sorta got in the way and my wants slowly diminished. I was blind. I have come to realization…that we need to be thankful for what we have…not what we want. 2009 has been a very hard year fighting cancer…and as unusual as it sounds…I am so thankful for it, as it reminds me how precious our lives really are. Our greatest gifts…are the day that we are born. That first breath of air, our first loving hug, and that first moment we open our eyes to the world. We are given paths from those first baby steps we take…and into adulthood, those paths remain in front of us. I know sometimes we can take that wrong path…but it’s ok. We have to get off course from time to time to remind us to open our hearts just a little bit wider…and the more you open your heart…the more the truth will be revealed. There is no greater gift than that! Everyone dreams…and everyone wishes…especially at the beginning of a brand new year. This year my wish is for everyone to take a single moment out of each day…and remind yourselves of the gift God has given you…and in return, help someone who is less fortunate than yourself. Because if everyone were to help at least one person in their lifetime…than we would have a world of no sorrow. Happy Holidays to you and yours…and here is to a New Year of unconditional love!! Love always, / Kellie Imagine

Happy New Year everyone!! Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged me in 2009, for those that were there in the hard times I’ve really appreciated it guys and to show that appreciation, in 2010 I’ve started a new blog: / / Please bmail or email me (karintaylor@exemail.com.au) if you suffer from anxiety, depression, stress or other illness and you find drawing relieves the symptoms. I’d like to feature people on my blog, but i need you to answer the following questions, along with links to your drawings or small file attachments (your work will only be used for the purpose of the feature and for no other profitable means) The questions are as follows and I’ve included my own (sample) answers to give an idea of what I’m looking for: 1. Why do you love drawing? / eg I love drawing because it takes me into another dimension where I am weightless, buoyant and lifted from all earthly and wordly troubles and i get to express myself in a very special way, I feel fulfilled and whole after I complete a drawing, much like swimming laps or completing an exercise routine, there is a feeling of achievement. / 2. Has drawing helped to relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress or illness? / Yes, whilst I’m drawing I’m on a different plane, and rarely think of or notice physical symptoms, headaches disappear, stress is gone, depression disappears for the moment, I am unaware of my anxiety and it’s a very good feeling….once I’m back from the drawing, symptoms return, but somewhat less….and I do feel much better. / 3. Where is your favourite drawing place? / I like to get cosy on my bed to draw, legs crossed or use my legs as a balance for the drawing board…i have a pile of pencils, erasers, etc…in an old cellophane fruit container….and my big pad of paper….and that’s where i feel most comfy and happy drawing ..... / My own drawings are being uploaded to the blog also as this year I will have an excess of drawings and probably not upload all of them here to the bubble, as I’m only uploading one artwork per week here, as is my New Year’s Resolution to take life easier, and I will use the blog as a way of finding wholeness and wellbeing through focussing on what works and helps keep depression at bay, according to you and according to whatever i learn through experience or research, that may include comedy, music, cognitive behavioural therapy and other things that i find helpful, or things you bring to my notice….i want to be able to tell your stories, in order to encourage myself and others in 2010 / ..... Thank you for listening! I look forward to hearing from you…Happy New Year !!! / ps…there is a link to my new blog on the front of my portfolio here at redbubble, so if you can’t find where to go or lose sight of this journal…don’t forget to look on my front page! :)
