I was curious about other red bubblers consensus on taking digital images while using a tripod as opposed to handholding. I’m beginning to see an alarming trend that my personal favorite images all are the ones that had camera and lens mounted on the tripod (of course for HDR and long exposures) there is no option anyway. I used to think that I was very good at handholding, but I am beginning to question this. What do you guys do? How are you getting your Keepers?

At the end, when the male otter returns and takes hold of his mate’s hand, he kisses it. Oh me oh my. Enjoy. Well at last. It gives me great pleasure to announce (virtual drum roll…) that as a result of selling cards, prints, t-shirts, photos, caps etc etc etc I have raised and just officially donated 1,320 smackas to HEAL Africa and Hand Up Congo. Many of you guys know I’ve been doing this for the last year after traveling there with an AID Group as a volunteer photographer. I’m stoked that I have been able to pay for 3 fistula operations (did anyone see the doco on the ABC last night?) – this will directly affect three women whose lives have been shattered by war rape. If the operations work they will be able to return to their villages an ‘equal’ citizen (well equal for a woman). The money will also go to restoring sight to a Congolese woman with severe cataracts and there was enough left over to buy 4 mosquito nets and associated mozzie destroyers! I just want to thank all those on RB who’ve supported the cause. There are too many names to mention… But I will mention…Jo O’Brien who regularly highlighted my pleas in the community page (hey how about this one too O’Brien!!) John Robb who invented ‘The world’s most expensive card’ campaign, all the Melbourne crew who encouraged me at meetups (those few I’ve gone too…) Bec Zachariah my room mate in Africa…all the people from OS who have bought stuff without knowing me (probably because they don’t know me!!) Anyway thanks from my heart. And their hearts. They have them you know. That’s why we need to keep fighting the good fight. Peace. xx healafrica.org

  • I’m not into Christmas but I do like an opportunity to design and build things. I made and embellished these boxes to give to Nick’s family in Melbourne. For more photos come over here to my blog. On the topic of Melbourne, I will have access to internet, but the best way to contact me is via email. If you have a lazy afternoon in a cafe planned or something drop me a line and we might be able to catch up. My email is definatalie at gmail.

  • New Unrestricted Stock

This is regards to my Deviant Art account where I post my own stock for others to use. I hope that you enjoy the new range and find it useful. I would love to hear your thoughts on this: I have always looked sideways at people who went out of their way to do something for you and wondered “Whats the catch?”. / It is in this day and age where the saying “No one dose anything, unless they are getting something out of it” seems more true than anything, and I wondered when I had become so jaded. When had I started looking at gifts like they had hidden rows of teeth waiting to take a chunk out of me? I am starting to think that an artist community should be one of mutual support, learning and sharing. So why was I asking people who were using my stock to curb their artistic licences to create by my need for recognition? I guess it goes back to the idea that, I got off my backside and spent time taking photographs so I should get something out of it. Now I am sure that there are going to be a lot of people who are going to read this and think that I am taking a stab at them, Im not. This is just a personal revelation on what I believe concerning my own stock. I still belive that as an artist you have the right to ask for recognition for the time and effort that you have taken in creating your stock, I dont dispute that right. I respect your rights and follow your guidelines, respecting you and thanking you for your stock. For it is with your help that I have been able to create the artworks that I have. But I was thinking to myself “If someone uses my stock and creates a completely new artwork from my stock, is it my right to tell them that they can or cant create a print or add them to their other artist accounts, when the resulting artwork is from their own imagination?” / It just makes it hard for them to be able to follow their creative voices when they are following about eight sets of different rules. So I have gone though my gallery and made a majority of it UNRESTRICTED STOCK, so that it is easier for all of you out there who would like to create and cant afford ot purchase stock. So use it as you will, post it where you want, sell it as a print without my permission…Because the finished artwork is the result of your own ideas, and I do not claim any rights over them. WHAT IS UNRESTRICTED STOCK? / Unrestricted stock can be used for both personal and commercial projects, but it cannot be redistributed as stock. You are not required to obtain permission prior to using the stock off site or in DA prints. The only requirements are that the stock provider be notified and credited. / New Folder The only rules that apply are to my MODEL STOCK (as with any model stock that is out there) and because they are of people you do need to follow the rules: 1. FOR DEVIANTART USE ONLY. ASK PERMISSION BEFORE POSTING ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE NET!!! THE MODEL HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE YOUR REQUEST IF SHE/HE BELIEVES THAT THE SITE IS INAPROPRIATE OR THE ARTWORK IS UNACCEPTABLE. 2. NO RACIAL, HATE OR PRONOGRAPHIC WORKS OF ART ARE TO BE CREATED FROM THESE SHOTS. IT CAN BE DAMAGING TO THE MODELS REPUTATION AND LEAD TO LOSS OF A JOB OR LAW SUIT. 3. YOU NEED TO ASK PERMISSION BEFORE CREATING A PRINT. YOU ARE INITIALLY ASKING PERMISSION TO SELL THE PERSONS BODY/IMAGE. 4. YOU MUST CREDIT AND LINK THE ARTWORK BACK TO THIS WEBACCOUNT ON DEVIANTART, AND SEND A LINK VIA NOTE TO ME SO THAT I CAN VIEW THE ARTWORK AND SEE IF IT IS ACCEPTABLE FOR PUBLICATION. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE FOLLOWED UP BY SERVIER CONSIQUENCES – LIKE ME SUEING YOU FOR DEFFIMATION!! If you are unsure of an image in my Gallery send me a note and ask. I do not require you to do this, but it would be nice if you took the time to fave the stock images that you use in your artworks as a thank you.

  • “Steady that shot” how to shoot slow shutter speeds

Do those available light photos sometimes come out a little fuzzy? Maybe you won’t even try a low light photo. Let’s look at some techniques for shooting in low light that may help. We are not discussing time exposures here just slower shutter speeds. Some of the first steps are to adjust the shutter speed/aperture combination for low light shooting. Generally speaking try to open up the aperture to allow shooting at a higher shutter speed. You can also change the EI value on the camera. If you normally shoot photos at EI200 and the camera indicates this photo will be shot at 1/15sec then increasing to EI800 will allow you to shoot at 1/60sec. And of course the higher the shutter speed the less camera movement is visible in the image. Now get a grip. Extend your hand, palm upright, with the thumb pointing away from you. Lay your camera in your hand with the thumb and forefinger wrapping around the lens. This distributes the weight of the camera down your arm. Place your other hand in the shooting position with your finger over the shutter release button. Now bring your elbows into your body and snug the camera top against your forehead. You now have a mini tripod made from your upper body. Much of the camera movement will now be absorbed by your upper body. All you have to do now is Frame+ Focus+ Hold your breath+ Squeeze the shutter release. Now lean against a wall, sign or lamppost. Spread your feet apart and slightly forward. When in this position and holding your camera as above you can shoot at 2-3 slower shutter speeds than normal. When shooting with long lenses many photographers choose to use a monopod. A long multi sectioned tube with a 1/4×20tpi stud on top that screws into the tripod mount on your camera or long lens itself. Sandbags can be placed on a wall, the ground or an open car window to cushion and stabilize your camera. Emergency sandbags can be made from a pair of socks or small plastic bag. Tripods are three legged structures with a provision for mounting the camera at the top providing a rigid but adjustable platform for stabilizing the camera and lens. Many photographers will also use a remote shutter release and some will lock up the mirror to further reduce vibrations when using a tripod. Of course, for hand holding your camera, a well toned set of muscles help. So occasionally doing some upper body strengthening exercises will also help. In a quick shooting situation you might try wrapping the camera strap around your arm to tighten up your grip on the camera. Or with the strap over your shoulder extend the camera until the strap tightens up for a little more support. Plan your stance and stand your plan Frame+ Focus+ Hold your breath+ Squeeze the shutter release. / Have fun shoot lots of pictures-Larry Grayam

  • Born From The Cell; step by step
    by Mui-Ling Teh

Some of you may have come across this journal...

Some of you may have come across this journal announcing a challenge in which we present the process behind our work. So I decided to present the process of how I did Born From the Cell. / / / / The Secret is… / / / / / / / I cast myself a really big hand then place a piece of origami on it! / / / / I’m kidding :P / / / Here are the instructions for the typical paper crane: / / / / To do a small one I first need to cut a perfect tiny square. There may be occasions that the paper will not have a straght edge, so I apply a bit of math and creativity to get the right angles, proportion and size. Here I define the edges of the square through a series of folds. / / / I first create a straight edge by a single fold. / / / To get the perpendicular corner of a perfect square I make another fold by overlapping one side of the first fold with the other and making sure they line up. / / / / / / / Along one edge, I mark with a needle how far in parrallel with the other edge I want my next fold to be (in this case 3mm), and fold along the edge again. / / / / / / Now I want to make sure those parrallel edges will also be 3mm like the first. I can use a ruler, but suppose none is available, and the first edge was done without measuring, here is a way to be precise: / / / / I make a perfectly diagonal fold by overlapping folded edges on both sides. One end of the folded diagonal will go through the intersection of a pair of perpendicular folds while the other bisects the other fold to define the third corner of the square. / / / / The diagonal fold is not only a measuring device, but a head start with the crane folding prior to cutting the paper. So essentially I’ve already done step one in the instructions above. / / There are severals way I can proceed from here. I choose to make another diagonal going the other way by overlapping the folds; this time I have a third guide from the previously folded diagonal. / / / / / / Using the two parralles lines bisected by the diagonal ones, I can fold the last edge / / / / The parrellel lines should be perfectly overlapping themselves. Meanwhile the last fold should go through the intersection of the diagonal lines with the parrallel lines. This means everything was done precisely. / / / / From here I can cut the square, but there is still more I can do to make the folding process easier. / / / / I divide the 3×3mm square into four, which is easier to do now then when the paper is small. Now I cut the square / / / / / / It is now time to proceed with folded the crane (following the instructions above): Step one, fold in half into a triagle / / / / Step two, fold that triangle in half. This is more easily accomplished thanks to the second folded diagonal line prior to cutting. / / / / Step three and four, open the triangle and press flat, and repeat on the other side. This is where the folds for creating the divided squares come in handy. / / / / From here on things are trickier so I have to create a special set-up. Here a magnifying glass holds down a piece of tape from which I will proceed with the rest of the folding while looking through the glass. If the tape is too sticky that can ruin the paper, so earlier on I stuck it to my pants a few times to collect some lint and not be as adhesive. / / / / Now I’m taking pictures through the magnifying glass… / / / / Step five and six, fold edges to the centre and unfold. / / / / / / / / / / These folds just act as a guide for the next step. I omitted folding the top corner; it doesn’t do much here. / / Step 7, open an press flat. / / / / / / Repeat on the other side. / / / / Finally I fold the head and the tail. / / / / / / After I finish folding the crane, I position it on my hand and shoot it through a magnifying glass. Since this is so close that my hand will take up the background, it didn’t matter to me how messy my workspace is :P / / / /

My new EOS 7D arrived today and now I’m sitting here waiting patiently for the battery to charge up so I can try it out. I can’t wait to get out and test it out! I also got the new EF-S 18-135 IS lens which will be my walkabout lens on this camera. I chose this lens because of it’s nice zoom range and should be a nice light weight lens for me to replace the 18-55 IS I had with my 500D. (Much lighter then the 35-350!) and I got the kit for a bit more then the body only. The new lens feels great paired up with the 7D! It feels like this lens was made for the camera! The lens has a decent build quality and has a metal lens mount. I haven’t had a chance to try it out on the 7D yet (Still waiting for the battery to charge) but I shot a couple test shots using my old 300D and the lens seems sharp, and the AF performs good for a non Ultrasonic motor lens. The IS seems to work well, and it’s pretty silent (You don’t really notice it when it’s engaged) Colours and contrast and sharpness look good from the test shots I’ve taken so far. The camera feels really solid, and the viewfinder is massive! It’s allot bigger then the 500D’s viewfinder for sure! it’s also noticeably larger then the viewfinder on the 40D/50D, I would say it’s about the same as the Nikon D300’s viewfinder. You now don’t get the Etched AF points when you look through the viewfinder though (It’s all electronic like on the Nikon’s) so the view though the viewfinder is totally clear. It’s also dim when there is no battery installed because the new viewfinder is battery dependent (Just like the Nikon viewfinders) so I haven’t had a chance to see how bright the viewfinder is because I’m waiting for the battery to charge, but I will write up a mini review after I’ve had the chance to use the camera properly. Anyway, I can’t wait to get out and try out the new camera, I will write up a 7D Review once I’ve had the chance to get use to the new camera, and shot with it for a while, in the meantime keep a eye out on my folio for some photos taken with the new camera and lens. Here’s the camera:
