Daniel 5. You’ll find this story in the bible. A history and theological professor I had in university helped to bring this story alive for me in class with his passion for historical detail. I hoped to bring it alive for you in the way that I am able. This is how this account of history plays out in my mind’s eye. From a writer’s perspective I would love to hear any constructive feedback that anyone has to offer. I have a fear of being a storyteller who ‘tells’ rather than ‘shows’. I’ve been playing around with how to use more descriptors and the five senses in my story writing (it seems to come more naturally to me in poetry). Let me know your thoughts!

  • One hand
    by Jan Stead JEMproductions

One hand / one touch / gentle / soft / sweet

For more years than we were told or realised, my husband’s father had been having small, mild strokes, often accompanied by severe nose bleeds. My mother in law, ever faithful and protective and abiding by his wishes, kept the secret. Until the effects became obvious and cumulative we did not know, although I suspected and often rang at the ‘right’ time. It was uncanny the number of times we would ring, and ask the usual ‘how are you’ question to have it answered with ‘better now’. After a long slow decline, during which he refused any and all medical intervention or help, he had to be admitted to hospital. / I wrote this after visiting him in hospital one day ~ an emotional experience to say the least. I gave this poem to my mother in law and, at her request, read it at his funeral.
