Someday Someday… on a clear, still, moonlit night; / To the beach, is where we’ll go. / With a blanket and hot chocolate already packed; / Walk, hand in hand, on soft, warm sand; / Down to the water’s edge, where we’ll dance awhile; / Oh, to hold you close and whisper in your ear; / Those three words you’ve longed to hear. / Brush aside the hair which hides your face; / See a smile grow and laughter kiss your lips; / Then sit with you ‘til dawn‘s early light; / Your hand in my left, hot chocolate in my right. / Precious moments, dreams and memories; / Someday… with you, I want to share.

Good news! I’ve just been booked to do my first wedding in February. This is exciting. My shoulder should be pretty much back in action by then. For those who don’t know … I’m having shoulder surgery on Dec 13 and will be out of action for a while until it heals enough for me to pick up a camera again and work on the computer. I might have to try clicking with my left hand .. should make for some interesting shots. mmm yes I might do that … ‘Left hand photography’ .... has potential. Thanks to all of you who support me and encourage me in my work. You are all truly a wonderful group of people who actually care! x x x

Star light / Star bright / First star I see tonight / I wish I may / I wish I might / Have this wish / I wish tonight… / / Lying on my back / Looking up at the stars / Connecting the specks of glitter / To form unicorns, fairies / And ice cream cones / The things I dreamt of a decade ago / / But I close my eyelids / Not completely but just enough / That everything is a blur / And the specks all squish together / To make one sparkling blob / / I open my eyes wide / And the light from one star / Twinkles like the diamond on my left ring finger / / Why won’t my wish come true? / I squeeze my eyes shut / Clench my hands into tight balls / My whole body shakes / With my valiant effort of making a wish / / I shake until I feel your fingers intertwine with mine / And your lips on mine / The connection we share is ten times stronger / Than that of the gravity of Saturn / / I open my eyes to look directly into yours / And see the reflection of the night sky in your pupils / To see your soul dance / Like the shooting star that flies across the sky / The ever-so-bright star stands out against the ink black that hangs above us / / Don’t be scared of a meteorite crashing down on our love / Don’t be scared of my wish / Don’t be scared to take my hand…

Reflection….. To reflect, think and wonder… I sit here and I think over and over what I have seen in the last few months. Now I know that the mind works the way it does for a reason. The mind is kind and will only let you remember what you can handle. Then why is it my mind shows me my mother dying over and over? Maybe it is because I am trying to grasp an aspect of it. Is what I believe I saw and heard real? The patchiness of the hand as she starts to leave. The light tinge of blue that takes over. The death rattle. That final moment of her trying to get her last breathe, and her eyes….. her eyes…. Something happens in that final moment that I cannot grasp that has something to do with the eyes. Its almost like that startled look you get when you are suprised, or even as if you saw something amazing, or frightening? The eyes suddenly dialate and then go back to normal in that last breathe. But I know there is more to what I saw than just the body dying. I felt it. The words of the Lords Prayer flowed out of my mouth like real words not as if you are just saying a prayer… no… I meant every word, no one else in the room except my mother and myself and I was not aware until after I had spoken these words that a male voice said the prayer with me. Many would say it was shock, or I am even insane. I really do not care, I know that that truly happened for whatever reason but I feel the reason is becoming clear…. The reason, I believe, is almost like a cleansing before she passed on. That last prayer, that renewing the heart as is spoken in the bible. Our father, who art in heaven. / Hallowed be thy name. / Thy Kingdom come. / Thy will be done. / On Earth as it is in Heaven. / Give us this day our daily bread. / And forgive us our trespasses. / As we forgive those who trespass against us / And lead us not into temptation / But deliver us from evil. / For thine is the power and the glory forever and ever. / Amen. I am not a religious person, not at all, but the power for the first time of prayer was evident to me on this day. I find it hard to know my mother has gone but I have to live and have to keep breathing for now. I pray with all my heart that I will see her again one day. The thought of never hearing her voice again terrifies me. I will hold onto the hope I will see her again, and I will remember her forever.

Several weeks ago, I have entered five photographs into a photo contest “People” of the Czech photography magazine PhotoLife . Last week, I have got a print of PhotoLife #64 (April/May 2008), and found that my photograph Illuminated is one of 49 published entries! Except of that, With love… was stamped as Chosen, which means it was also one of the finalists chosen for publication, only did not fit into the page layout (considering harmony of all photographs to be published at one page…) as desired by the publisher. Considering it was my very first contest entry since I have started to take photography really seriously, I’m happy :)

Well at last. It gives me great pleasure to announce (virtual drum roll…) that as a result of selling cards, prints, t-shirts, photos, caps etc etc etc I have raised and just officially donated 1,320 smackas to HEAL Africa and Hand Up Congo. Many of you guys know I’ve been doing this for the last year after traveling there with an AID Group as a volunteer photographer. I’m stoked that I have been able to pay for 3 fistula operations (did anyone see the doco on the ABC last night?) – this will directly affect three women whose lives have been shattered by war rape. If the operations work they will be able to return to their villages an ‘equal’ citizen (well equal for a woman). The money will also go to restoring sight to a Congolese woman with severe cataracts and there was enough left over to buy 4 mosquito nets and associated mozzie destroyers! I just want to thank all those on RB who’ve supported the cause. There are too many names to mention… But I will mention…Jo O’Brien who regularly highlighted my pleas in the community page (hey how about this one too O’Brien!!) John Robb who invented ‘The world’s most expensive card’ campaign, all the Melbourne crew who encouraged me at meetups (those few I’ve gone too…) Bec Zachariah my room mate in Africa…all the people from OS who have bought stuff without knowing me (probably because they don’t know me!!) Anyway thanks from my heart. And their hearts. They have them you know. That’s why we need to keep fighting the good fight. Peace. xx healafrica.org

  • Touch Me Calendar
    by Alexander Edwards

Here it is. My first ever exhibit will happen in Janua…

Here it is. My first ever exhibit will happen in January 09. I’ll be exhibiting the Touch Me series. This is part of the reason why so far none of the images have been for sale in any form until now. Partly because I need help funding the prints for the exhibit. Each calendar will pay for one print to be hung on the wall. But please don’t think I will be charging a heap for the prints and rolling around in the profits. This whole project is non-profit and I will be pricing the prints to recover costs and provide some money to my very helpful models – who so far have worked for nothing. So please know that if you buy one of these you’re getting art on your wall that was made with much love. And that in buying one you have made more than one person very happy to be able to continue doing what they love.

I have just finished a piece for the American Heart Association and it is going to be auctioned off to raise money for research. I was honored to be chosen as one of the five artists in the Central Valley to create a piece at their annual Heart Ball. I was also agonizing over what the theme meant to me, which was “what does heart mean to you?” I had a lot of ideas of what it means to me but translating into art was a challenge. I would love some constructive criticism on if i achieved the goal. Thank you / hands

  • I Love Sketchbooks
    by Richard Sunderland

Recent projects that I am working on. This one is linked to a visit to The Fenlands, Cambridgeshire. !http://images-0.redbubble.net/im…

Recent projects that I am working on. This one is linked to a visit to The Fenlands, Cambridgeshire. If there are better ways of putting a slideshow on to my Journal please let me know I’m sure there are, I just haven’t found it yet. I hope to keep adding to this Journal, it seems for me to be an appropriate place. In recent years my sketchbook has been an increasingly growing practical activity, I carry one all the time now and either have pens or the occasional pencil alongside my watercolours and a bottle of water. Pencils although I enjoy using need to be sharpened and I don’t like carrying a knife and pencil sharpeners ruin my pencils. Preparing this has been really good to analyze my own practice, the function of the sketchbook and persona journal, how i keep a record of my research and the use of a sketchbooks. Mine usually has collage in there and postcards, bus tickets, gallery notes, art historical links. Ideas for future projects. Sketchbooking for my work has evolved into quick capture technique, memory prompts alongside my “happy snapping” with my camera or phone camera, first-hand experiences, my visual eye in my mind has to be fed. I gather and take back as much as I can to the studio, where `i can work as freely or as tightly as I desire. I have other sketchbooks that serve other purposes, I’m still a bit of a scrapbooker and I have adapted this approach to resourcing my artwork. I try and re-cycle everything so pieces that don’t work automatically become collage materials great to paint on top of. I like to pre-paint pages so I can work over the top of colour, texture and tone. Sometimes a blank page can be intimidating, getting something on it quickly opens up the page for use. Water-soluble pens are great for adding a wet brush to the ink, it bleeds an gives instant tone. I would be interested in seeing and hearing of any other sketchbook fanatics, and I hope to beable to get over the image technicalities eventually to share the images more effectively Richard Sunderland / August 26 2009
