Taken on the trail to “The Basin” on Friday October 3/08. Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-55mm lens. / The Basin is a naturally occuring granite bowl in the White Mountains range and is part of the Franconia Notch State Park, located in the heart of the popular White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire USA / On this trail are cascades and waterfalls leading to The Basin, which is believed to have been eroded 15,000 years ago while the North American ice sheet was melting. The Basin has been smoothed by small stones and sand, whirled around by the Pemigewasset River. / I didn’t make it as far as The Basin this time (have been there in the past), because I was caught by surprise in an unexpected downpour. I quickly shoved my camera into the case and wrapped my sweater around it. Then looked for my friend Wanda who was nowhere to be found. She had made it all the way to The Basin ahead of me. I was lucky to find cover under the roof of an outhouse at the beginning of the trail. It rained and hailed for about 20 minutes. When my friend Wanda made it back, she was soaking wet. This is one of two shots I managed to get. ! PROUD WINNER OF THE COVERED BRIDGES CHALLENGE IN THE HAPPY HAVEN PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP, OCTOBER 7, 2009 Fourth in my series New Hampshirie Foliage 2008. Photographed October 8, 2008 at Powder Mill Pond, Greenfield & Hancock, NH. Enjoy! Len (Below are some interesting facts about this historic ‘County Bridge’) In 1852, a Long truss covered bridge was built on this site by Charles Gray of Hancock. In March 1936, a disastrous flood damaged the bridge beyond repair. The current bridge was designed by Henry Pratt of Antrim and constructed as a Federal Emergency Relief Administration project by the Hagan-Thibodeau Construction Company of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. When it was rebuilt in 1937, the structure was set on concrete abutments and was reinforced using steel TECO timber connectors, bolts, and gusset plates. The TECO connectors gave the timber joints added strength and allowed the bridge to be rated at a twenty ton carrying capacity. Three tons of steel were used in the construction of the bridge. Asphalt shingles were replaced with wooden ones in September of 1981 at a cost of $77,000. The County Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. /

/ Burley`s most infamous inhabitant lived there during the 1950s – a white witch named Sybil Leek. She wandered through the village with her pet jackdaw and was an authority on New Forest life, having spent much of her time living with Forest gypsies. /

This is one of the many wonderful view from the top of Mt Avalon. It was quite a spectacular day too – no rain! Cool and just right temperature-wise the hike was adventurous and fun. The reward at the top made this worth it! Here we’re looking down Crawford Notch and of the other almost countless mountains that subside here. That cliff in front of us is one heck of a drop!
