I was wrapping a gift and pulled a page out of an old calendar and used YELLOW ribbon to tighten the packaging. I thought it had a nice ARTSY feel, so I decided to share the concept here as I thought it would make an ideal ‘greeting card’ or ‘print’ too. A yellow ribbon is a symbol with various meanings, mostly associated with those waiting for the return of a loved one or of military troops who are temporarily unable to come home.

[ Tayrona National Park ] One of Colombia’s most popular national beaches, set in deep bays and shaded with coconut palms, are among the loveliest in Colombia. Hammocks were plentiful, and the nights were spent drinking rum and playing cards by candlelight. Glimpsing Taganga for the first time as you come around the rocky promontory and leave the decaying suburbs of Santa Marta behind is a breathtaking scene. From above the setting is paradisiacal, the sun’s beams hitting the rippling Caribbean, palms lining the beachfront and swaying gently in a cooling breeze, colourfully painted fishing boats anchored in the bay, well…what more could you ask for?

When my family and I were in Ireland last September, we visited the James Joyce Tower in Sandycove, Dublin. Joyce spent a week there in 1904. The hammock and trunk is a photograph I had taken at the tower. When we we reading to leave Sandycove, I looked up and saw this man in the window and quickly made another photo. He reminded me of Joyce. I knew I wanted to combine the images in some manner. This is the first attempt. The title is the opening line of Ulysses. The quote is from “The Dead,” the closing story in Dubliners. / Finally, the texture is from a free download that was mentioned on JPG Cast_off forum (Wedding Textures). ! My image “Sunrise over Oak Hammock Marsh” was featured in the Mangroves, Marshes and Mudflats group on 25 May 2009… I arrived at 5:39AM on 17 May 2009, to catch the early morning sunrise on the marsh. But what amazed me was the melodious sound of the marsh birds at that time in the morning. The announcements from Mother Nature were a real pleasure to hear, as the nature came alive. Location: Oak Hammock marsh some 50 kms north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi F stop: F/5.0 Exposure: 1/640 sec. Focal length: 80.0 mm Flash: flash did not fire, Shutter speed (Tv): 9.3
I spent some time on this hammock last July 2007 while on the island of Anguilla. It sure looks like a nice spot right now…during the Winter season. :(

This is a pen and ink sketch of Treeman relaxing in a hammock, reading Leaves of Grass while being held by men made of wood. Treeman will soon be a series. Oddly when I work with this particular pen, I have an alter-ego that is whimsical instead of gothic. In another world, trees will rule the earth. Inspired by Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. 9×12”

I TOOK THE LIBERTY TO LIVE IN ABJECT POVERTY WHEN i DIDN;T HAVE TO WHILE A YOUNGER MAN. I LIVED IN A PALAPA ON THE BEACH AND COOKED OVER A FIRE IN THE CORNER OF MY SAND FLOORED ROOM.
