There are a great number of abandoned houses in the village, these are slowly being rebuilt and turned into tourist appartments and villas. Chorio, the old capital of the island of Halki, with 4,000 inhabitants in its heyday, was gradually abandoned and is now quite deserted and mostly in ruins, although it was once the only settlement on Halki. Chorio is built around the hill upon which the remains of the fortress stands (the Kastro, the castle of the medieval Knights of St John), and has some interesting old style stone houses. The town was built in a position concealed from view from the sea, and high above the initial maraudings of pirates. We had a dramatic thunderstorm and torrential rain during the previous evening. Next morning, we found this little boat sunk in the crystal clear waters in the bay of Nimborio on the Greek Island of Halki. It had filled with water during the storm.
