Scarification is a means of permanently marking the skin by cutting alone, without the use of pigments. The scars may be lighter or darker than your original skin tone and may raise up (keloid scarring). There are many ways to produce a scar but the cut must always penetrate the dermis if a scar is to be produced. The result depends as much on your skin as the method used. Black skin in particular is very good at producing pronounced keloid scars and this is a popular alternative to tattooing for people with very dark skin, for whom a tattoo might not show up very well. In many parts of Africa these scars are marks of beauty and a way to identify someone belonging to a particular group. Scarification also may mark one’s status as a civilized being, adult, or member of a specific ethnic group or initiation association. I spend a day in his school in a remote village of Benin to work on the Art in All of Us activities (www.artinallofus.org). I had really a great time thanks to the kids creativity. A portrait of a relaxed woman, head tilted back, afro freshly fluffed with beautiful ornaments called paisley. This portrait is framed by a lacey oval shape topped with a paisley flower, stylized stem shapes, 2 more paisleys and crowned with a 3D wireframe object enclosed in a round of flowers. This is a piece further inspired by other original paisley pen sketches I have made and a deeper experiment of the most recent “Paisley Tresses”. One major idea behind this is the substitution of the main object and it being replaced with a different object of choice. Not a brand new idea but another interpretation of those great ideas that other artists have used for many years in some POP art pieces. 3-9-2008

It took me a while to figure out where this little guy’s eyes were, they were hidden by a spikey fringe… If you have trouble spotting them, they are the black globe like structures either side of his little jaw. Best viewed large.
The last time I had a holiday in my native Scotland, in an adjoining field to our accommodation, were a herd of Scottish Highland cattle. The bull was called Hamish and with his wilder than normal hairdo became a regular photo subject for me during my holiday. The breed are well known for their long hair but this one seemed to be having a particularly bad hair day when I took this shot. Nikon D100 / 18 – 70 zoom @ 60mm / F5 for 1/90sec.

This new series is about beauty… about women and what their beauty says about them…their stories….more than anything else hair is a woman’s crowning glory and says a lot about her…we women many times hide behind our hair…it is an emblem of our strength….we spend eons of time and money on our hair, we mourn it’s loss when we are ill, and rejoice on our good hair days… / Each painting has a story attached…Jane’s hair, though one might think so, is not indicative of a messy person, but an expression of who she is…..clever, thoughtful, sensitive…she’s complicated….she is an adored woman, revered almost, which is almost too much for her…an icon in her world, here she is caught at a moment of vulnerability, eyes turned to the painter…almost at a disadvantage (in her mind), as this is not the face generally seen by the public…though her hair is always seen massed as it is, or falling around her face… The keen stars were twinkling, / And the fair moon was rising among them, / Dear Jane. / The guitar was tinkling, / But the notes were not sweet till you sung them / Again. As the moon’s soft splendour / O’er the faint cold starlight of Heaven / Is thrown, / So your voice most tender / To the strings without soul had then given / Its own. The stars will awaken, / Though the moon sleep a full hour later / To-night; / No leaf will be shaken / Whilst the dews of your melody scatter / Delight. Though the sound overpowers, / Sing again, with your dear voice revealing / A tone / Of some world far from ours, / Where music and moonlight and feeling / Are one...Percy Bysshe Shelley The entire Portrait Collection can be viewed by clickingHERE / Delia

I painted a bit of myself in “Lilah”....she is the closest I have come to a self portrait…her mouth is like mine when I’m not smiling, but my eyes are less slanted…I used to have my hair like that…in fact it’s like that in my avatar, but now it’s really short…masses of hair was just too much work… / Lilah is a dancer that has just been promoted to principal dancer from the corps de ballet..she lives with two other dancers near the studio, and plans to get her own place as soon as she can…next year the company will be touring Europe and Lilah has been given several important roles…it’s a liitle scary, but she can handle it...
