Lil Dead Riding Hood…A lighter Side of Dark Fable / by Paul Rees Jones Deep in the darkest part of the Forest of Shadows, a little girl walks along a faint path. In her hand is a basket of goodies, all meant for grandma. She wore the familiar red cloak and hood and hummed as she skipped through the grasping old trees, weathered and twisted from age and horror. Evil sounds chattered through dead branches at the girl in the red hood. None of these sounds bothered her. She kept following the path to grandma’s house. Intent on reaching the small cottage before light. She wondered if granny would like the goodies that she prepared? Arsenic Tarts, Venom Cakes, Wormy Turnovers and other gooey treats. This was not your average Riding Hood. As she turned on a twisty path, she heard the familiar rustling from the brush. She pretended to ignore it as she happily skipped through the dark. As if on queue, a large furry critter jumped out of the brush. Snarling and growling in a wolfy wail. “Where are you off to little girl?” The wolf asked in a rough tone. “To grandmas house with these…oh poo…can we skip this part?” She asked the drooling dog. “What?” he replied? A little confused. “Well, you are going to make some small talk, try and figure out a way to my grandma’s where you will break in, lock up granny, or eat her, then disguise yourself as her and hope to get my goodies.” The wolf relaxed a bit, “well that is a good plan. I really hadn’t gotten that far. I am a little knew to this wood and to be honest, there ain’t that many wolves. In fact I haven’t run into a one.” “I know, such a pity…wolves are such delicious company.” The girl replied absent-mindedly. “Um…delicious?” asked the wolf. “You know…fun,” she corrected herself. “So where is this grandma’s house?” The girl in the red hood went into her basket and pulled out a piece of paper. “Here is the pamphlet,” she said handing it to the wolf. The wolf looked at the shiny parchment. He was rather impressed that the girl would go to so much trouble to help out a hungry wolf. On this paper was a detailed map of a shortcut to a little cottage and the whereabouts of the spare key under the front bench. It isn’t everyday a wolf runs into a Red so helpful. Wolves were not the brightest creatures in the forest, but something was off. “Thanks Red!” he replied warily. “Oh no bother, and please call me Dead.” The wolf had a pang of memory. Something he was taught as a pup. He racked his brain trying to remember it. “Dead, strange name for a girl,” the wolf said still trying to remember. “Well I don’t go by my full name much. Lil Dead Riding Hood is a mouthful in quick conversation.” The wolf happened to remember the warnings about little girls in Red Hoods offering pamphlets. Unfortunately he felt a bop on his head before he could really act on the warning. She skipped through the forest, a little happier than before. Not only did she have a lovely basket of goodies, but she also dragged a wolf by the tail. And here she thought that there were no wolves left. Her smile was as big as her appetite. Venom cakes were delicious after Wolf steak. Lil Dead Riding Hood hummed her happy tune.

You will laugh your head off when you read this, but….. ...this design, when it was first doodled, started off being a tomboy looking girl in a baseball uniform…..I doodled it late at night and really wasnt paying too much attention to what I was doing…. The next morning I woke up and picked up my tablet off the living room floor and was like ‘Um..okay, baseball…where the hell did that come from?!’ so I erased all but the head (hair and all! No kidding!) and redrew her body….. ...now she’s a nakey mermaid! Enjoy!
I couldn’t help myself…it just…happened! lol
