Prompted by JuileeP and her Antarctic pinhole endeavours, and spurred on by the response to my initial uploads here, I finally got around to bulding a 35mm pinhole camera. Now, I’ve dismantled the first one and set up a 2nd. The first was an old rangefinder job, which I decided to sacrifice: pulled the lens off but kept most of the rest intact, then fitted with a shiny new pinhole. It was around 21mm focal distance, so nice & wide. After testing that, and deciding that the images could be sharper (yes, it’s a pinhole, but I like it to best the best pinhole I can manage), I spotted a more modern autowind plastic cheapo in a charity (thrift) shop for $2, and snapped it up. I took that apart more carefully, and transplanted the pinhole, this time about 27mm from the film. As soon as I’ve got some worthy results, I’ll upload. Dismantling the cheapo camera was a fascinating exercise in itself, and I can recommend it for anyone curious about what goes on inside a camera. I’ve done a few more mechanical cameras in my time, but I was surprised to see what they packed inside this case, for something that had no autofocus or exposure, just flash and winder. The challenge is always discovering the trick to opening the body up, which in this case was fairly simple, but it involved a bit of scary brute force to pull off the front. Snapping it back on was easier. Happily, I managed to remove the shutter assembly – itself a delightfully simple piece of thin-metal engineering – and keep everything else intact, including exposure counter & winder. I decided to disable the flash, partly to save the batteries, but also because It would likely be of little use with the pinhole. Besides, with the flash capacitor disconnected, there would be no chance of shock later on, if I accidentally touched the terminals. For anyone not aware, and who wants to poke around inside a camera with flash, there is a big fat capacitor to store charge for the flash, which can give you a hefty electric shock. The best thing, unless you understand enough about electronics, is to avoid anything with a flash in it. The 35mm pin-cams are convenient, so that I can take more than one shot before having to reload; however, I still want to load up some of my other one-shot pin-cams that use large film or paper, and take some slightly more interesting images. Before I do that though, I’ll need to conjure up a passable darkroom space – and that’s a bit more tricky…

Did you hear about poor little peanut the puppy? If not then please read this article and i urge you to PLEASE sign the petition… HARDENED police officers have been shocked by the horrifying torture, mutilation and brutal slaying of a seven-month-old fox terrier pup “PEANUT” at Moranbah. Jonathon (Jon) Connor Blake, 20, and Trent William Cunniffe 24, (the accused) did not apply for bail. Police have obtained video footage from a mobile phone that shows graphic images of the puppy yelping and howling in terrible pain as it is hacked to pieces. Animal rights experts have described the case as one of the worst and most horrific in Australian history. Police allege that a pair of garden shears and a pocket knife were used to torture and kill the little puppy. Moranbah police said the dog was a family pet and the owners were too distressed and upset to talk to anyone about it. The pup’s nose was cut off, its front right leg and rear left leg were cut off and it was decapitated. His stomach was cut open from neck to tail. Police will say the dog was stolen from a residence in Railway Parade in Moranbah and was taken to a lookout in the town. Congealed blood and dog hairs were found on picnic tables at the lookout. A three-part video series on a mobile phone shows the dog being tortured. The final stages of the video show the dog’s mutilated body parts. The dog’s body was found about 3.50am on Monday near the town’s campdraft ground. It was dumped beside a road. Police were attending a car accident when they discovered the dog’s body. After seizing the mobile phone, police recovered a set of garden shears which had dog hair and blood on them. Police also took possession of the clothes worn by two men in the car, for scientific testing. Senior police officers were visibly shaken after viewing the footage. Police and the RSPCA say that if the allegations are true this could well be the worst case of animal cruelty ever brought before the courts in Australia,” RSPCA’s Queensland Chief Inspector Michael Pecic said. This is very, very disturbing,” Mr Pecic said. / For legal reasons this is really all I can say at the moment. But when you talk to senior police officers who have seen a lot of carnage in their time and they say it shocked even them, then you begin to get the picture. Footage from the attack has been suppressed by police until the outcome of the court case. The maximum penalty under the Animal Care and Protection Act for such an offence is $75,000 or two years in jail; however, the maximum penalty ever handed out has been a four-month jail term. Both men were charged in the Mackay Magistrate’s Court with stealing a dog, wilfully and unlawfully killing it, wilfully damaging a gate, and unlawful possession of marijuana, all at Moranbah on Monday. I have been told by another concerned animal lover this little dog tried to escape on the bloodied stumps away from these people who slaughtered it in the end. THESE SADISTIC LOSERS ARE TRYING TO PLEAD MENTAL ILLNESS TO REDUCE THE SENTENCE! One the monsters, Trent Cunniffe has just been admitted to the Mackay Base Hospital’s mental health unit, the Magistrate’s Court was told yesterday.” Daily Mercury . Leet or eleet (Leet: l337, 3l337 or l33t, 3l33t ), also known as “leetspeak”, is an alphabet used primarily on the Internet for the English language. It uses various combinations of ASCII characters to replace Latinate letters. The term is derived from the word “elite”, and the usage it describes is a specialized form of symbolic writing. Different “dialects” or varieties of leet are found on different online forums. Initially, the word l33t was used as an adjective, to primarily describe the behavior or accomplishments of others in the community, with “lame” being its antonym. In that usage leet generally carries the same meaning when referring to either the game prowess, n00b ownage, or, in original usage, hacking expertise of another person. From adjective form its use then expanded to include use as an expletive or interjection in reaction to a demonstration of the former qualities. With the mass proliferation of Internet use in the 1990s into the 21st century, Leet has since become a part of Internet culture and slang.[1] Leet may also be considered a substitution cipher, albeit with much variation from user to user. Thanks to Wikipedia for me not having to regurgetate the meaning… :-)
