  • the castle known as “de haar”, located near the dutch city of utrecht. the castle is mostly a 19th century romantic interpretation of what a medieval castle ought to look like and said to be the largest in the netherlands (although Bergh house is also a serious contender for that title). the original 14th century castle fell to ruin centuries ago, after the owners were forced to flee the netherlands in the 17th century. only in the nineteenth century did the family who owned the ruin have the money and the oppertunity to come back and rebuild the castle (mostly by a marriage with a member of the rich Rothshield family). and rebuild it they did! the building incorporates the original ruin in it’s entirety and a completely new massive tower and wing in the place of the old curtain wall and gate. The old inner courtyard is covered by a massive cast iron and glass roof. unfortunately the medieval foundations cannot support the massive weight of all that new neo-gothic splendour and the castle is literally tearing itself apart (hence the scaffolding so cleverly hidden behind the pergola). it is now open to the public, but the baron and his family still use it as a summer home and live here every september.

  • De Haar Castle is one the most visited castles in the Netherlands. This Gothic fairy-tale castle we see today however was built from 1892 till 1912 with incorporation of the large 15th century ruins of the original castle. De Haar Castle was founded in the 14th century on sediment deposits along a blind arm of the river Rhine. It was first mentioned in 1391. Originally the owner of De Haar Castle was a member of the Van de Haar family, who as a manservant of the Prince-bishop of Utrecht, had enough prestige to have a fortified residence built for himself and his family. In 1449 the castle became property of the Van Zuylen family through the marriage between Josyna van de Haar and Dirk van Zuylen. It probably got its pentagonal shape after the castle was destroyed in 1482 as a result of the quarrels between the bishop and the city of Utrecht. http://www.kasteeldehaar.nl/History/186/The_Castle.html

  • Originally a medieval stronghold, the castle is now mostly a 19th century romantic interpretation of what a medieval castle ought to be. The original 14th century castle fell to ruin centuries ago, after the owners were forced to flee the netherlands in the 17th century due to th prosecution of catholics following the war of independance against Spain. Only in the nineteenth century did the baron who then owned the ruin have the money and the oppertunity to come back and rebuild the castle. This money came mostly from marrying the french-jewish barones Hélène de Rothschild. Because of her marriage to a non-jew, her mother promptly disowned her and refused to ever speak to her again. Nevertheless, she brought with her a massive sum that easily enabled the baron and baroness to rebuild and enlarge the old castle to a massive scale. What we see here is the main castle in the centre. Most of the walls and the two round towers are still medieval. Due to its remote loction, the ruin never fell prey to people scavenging for building materials and the walls and towers of the building were still in good condition, eventhough floors, windows and roofs were missing. Cuypers (the architect basically the dutch version of Violet-le-Duc Added a massive new wing and tower where there used to be only a curtain wall and a gatehouse. He also installed an enormous cast-iron and glass cover over the inner courtyard. To the left is the ‘chalet’, basically service buildings on the site of the original bailey of the castle. Unfortunately the medieval foundations cannot support the massive weight of all that neo-gothic splendour and the castle is literally tearing itself apart. Currently work is being done to repair the damage and strengthen the foundations (hence the scaffolding so cleverly hidden behind the pergola). It is open to the public, but the baron and his family still use it as a summer home and live here every september.

  • The medieval residence De Haar was founded in the course of the fourteenth century, on sediment deposits along a blind arm of the river Rhine. The first references to the castle date back to 1391. De Haar, however, is really special because – more than 100 years ago now – it was entirely restored and partially rebuilt, resulting in a restoration unparalleled in Europe. This involves not only the architecture, but also the interior and the gardens. Even the church and the village were involved in this project so that, without exaggeration, one could say it is a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ (integrated work of art): this is the creation of a unique, special, world in which all aspects of man’s creative talents could flourish. A reworked photo which I took about a year ago.

  • Looking down Hanover Street towards the Royal Scottish Academy Building, on a haar-thick winter morning in December: where the shadow falls, the pavements are still wet enough with the water from the air to reflect back the light, but in direct sunlight the moisture evaporates fast and the pavements begin to look dry within minutes. A classic Edinburgh day. See other photographs of buildings around Edinburgh

  • Hugo the roommate Another picture from my roommate. It is interesting how they look in detail. Hugo for example looks like he has a clear surface. But in detail there are thousands of little hairs. It’s weird, but i will miss him over the summerbreak. HDR out of one RAW. It was a hard decision what i will show. The whole spider, or only the body. I hope you like it.
