This is a picture of a huge storm that came in suddenly over the beach in Cape May New Jersey…while everyone else ran for cover…i ran for my camera. I got soaked, but it was worth it.
An exhilarating day of sunshine on the water, on the Gulf of Mexico at Longboat Beach, near Sarasota, Florida. A lone gull stands on the sugary sand at the water’s edge, perhaps enjoying the breeze, perhaps waiting for something tasty to wash ashore. My little corner of the world has to be represented by a beautiful shot of sand and sunshine backed by the beautiful blue of the Gulf of Mexico. This is where I grew up and, throughout several decades of living in the north (Virginia is about as far “north” as I could allow myself to go), it was the Gulf that I continued to feel connected to. I grew up with it and, wherever I go, I still feel oriented to it; I learned to tell directions from my relative position to the beach and the Gulf. I cannot imagine being happy again living too far away from it. I look at this picture and can just smell the sunshine—how can it not be my happy haven?

BLACK & WHITE | BUILDINGS & ARCHITECTURE | FLOWERS | IRELAND | LONDON | MALLORCA | PLAYING with PICTURES | RED The Virgin rock from the Nuns Strand Caves, Ballybunion, County Kerry, Ireland. the Nuns Strand is a small secluded beach with golden sands. It is surrounded on all sides by cliffs. The only access these days is gained by climbing down the cliff face. / Many years ago, St Joseph’s Convent was built on the cliffs, affording the nuns a wonderous view. A wooden stirway was built so that they could access the beach and it was theirs to use exclusively. / The Virgin Rock is all that remains of what was once another small promontory cliff that has been eroded by the sea. Before the arrival of the nuns, the rock was known as Carraig Na Faoileán (Rock of !the Gulls). /

Three seagulls in flight – composite image
Painted from a very old photo (1857) of a collier brig. Taken from my wonderful book of North East sailing ships on the coast. / And the ship, background and quay, are painted from the fenland port of Wisbech, on the Lincolnshire coast. The rest of the painting is from my imagination. Watercolour on two rivers, hand-made 140lb paper. / 14” x 21”
Another in the Masters series. / This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895. I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb. I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.
My version of a Thomas Bush Hardy (1842-97). From an 1895 watercolour of Ramsgate Harbour. A panoramic shaped painting, 23” x 10”. / Hand-made, 140lb rough paper. Over 20 hours work. Multiple layers of semi-transparent and opaque watercolour, and white zinc gouache for highlights. Viewing in larger size is necessary.

But more wonderful than the lore of old men and the lore of books is the secret lore of ocean. Blue, green, gray, white or black; smooth, ruffled, or mountainous; that ocean is not silent. All my days have I watched it and listened to it, and I know it well. At first it told to me only the plain little tales of calm beaches and near ports, but with the years it grew more friendly and spoke of other things; of things more strange and more distant in space and time. Sometimes at twilight the gray vapors of the horizon have parted to grant me glimpses of the ways beyond; and sometimes at night the deep waters of the sea have grown clear and phosphorescent, to grant me glimpses of the ways beneath. And these glimpses have been as often of the ways that were and the ways that might be, as of the ways that are; for ocean is more ancient than the mountains, and freighted with the memories and the dreams of Time. (H. P. Lovecraft)

Digital art in an abstract realism style. In my very large file, this art work shows more cloud texture. The print should too because there’s a layer of cloudy sky behind the red. VIEW IT LARGE to get a somewhat better idea of what the print will look like. This artwork has been FEATURED in “The Great Outdoors” group. :)
