On my way to Salt Spring Island (by power boat), the fog was beginning to clear. The fog didn’t seem to bother the sailer, but I was pleased it cleared as I had to navigate through the rocky coast line.

Moss that grows on west coast pines … doesn’t look like this from afar … you got to be at “one” with the tree.

The Robertson II took a shoal at 2 am, July 1, 2007. It was a sad day as the owners were not exactly avid sailers (enough said). This was taken soon (days) after the grounding waiting for it to be returned to the sea.

Navy Channel separates Mayne, Saturna, and Pender Islands – three of BC’s Gulf Islands. It is normally turbulent … but this evening it’s calm surface provided a beautify mirror for the evening sky.

Foggy day on the ocean and all I can see is Edith point – my beacon to home.

Many have asked me what ever happened to the Robertson II (See below). Well, now you know. She sits close to the rocks that claimed her … between Mayne and Saturna Island, BC, Canada. I imagine it will take many years before she decomposes. For now, she is a “marker” at the end of the reef. July 1, 2007 / March 15, 2008 /

One of the Gulf Island’s jewels: A marine park 10 miles south of Mayne Island, BC, Canada. Wonderful tidal pools and at least 5 different eco systems. The home of at least one eagle’s nest.

It was late. Past midnight the morning on July 1, 2007. Canada Day. A day to celebrate the creation of Canada. Later that day hundreds would gather in Winter Bay, Saturn Island for the annual Lamb Barbecue. The Robertson II was arriving late: ebb tide on a dark night. On a southerly heading, probably not realizing that the 4 knot tide was drifting them to starboard, the Robertson II was on a collision course with death. It hit close to high tide … the worst tide condition for any grounding. If it was a low (rising) tide, patience would have been all that was required. The nautical rule: enter port on a rising tide. If you ground, the tide will free you soon. The tide was not only high, but it was starring to ebb thus the current. Who knows why they made the choice they did, but the plan, or lack of one, resulted in losing her. No one was injured … just egos, I presume. The skull and crossbones flag she was flying was an ominous sign. As it turned out, they were the “bounty” and the sea it’s captor. Five attempts to raise her failed. Her clock had run out. The hundreds of young Canadians (and others too) who learned to sail on her (she was a training vessel for many years), grieved her loss as did the thousands who toured her when tied up in Victoria Harbor. Every December 24th, hundreds of Mayne Island residents (population 900) join together to celebrate the season around the community Christmas tree. This year there was a clear sky and a timely moon rise. / Fifteen second exposure.

Sorry for the re-loads … I had to correct spelling errors … a chronic problem with me The Entrance to Mount Park, Mayne Island. A succulent park filled with fauna and flora elevating some 500 feet above Georgia Strait. Some years ago, a DC 3 crashed near the summit enoute to Victoria BC. It is a park of great personal significants.

This Arbutus point towards Saturna Island located 1 mile south of Mayne Island and home of the grounded Robertson II. She lies just behind the trunk of the Arbutus.

Transformed into a park, this lighthouse is not manned. In fact, the main light does not work .. there is a smaller, high powered, automatic light. I was checking it out today preparing for a wedding shoot in 4 weeks and could no resist taking a few pics.

A tradition on Mayne Island – a community gathering around the colourfully lit pine tree adjacent to the bonfire – the evening air filled with christmas carols sang out of sink, as usual. (I know Christmas has passec, but I am getting images ready for next season)

It is that time of year when the new growth appears … spring in BC … bright green tendrils … the harbingers of season … This would look good on your wall …. /

A peninsula on Mayne Island, BC, containing 100 acres of wooded forrest all surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Though private property, the owners permit locals to hike this prime real estate as long as they stay away from the homestead at the point … and they do. An example of the generosity of folks on Mayne Island.

Morning mist rises on Campbell Bay as dear friend takes the plunge. Gulf Island water is cold – averaging 56 degrees in the summer. However, a rising tide in Campbell Bay increases the temperature to over 60 … rather hot for we islanders.
