The Japanese have a concept they call wabi-sabi that speaks to the art of imperfection and the willingness to accept things as they are. Wabi-sabi is really about process, / not the end result. Wabi-sabi requires that we take time to pay attention to imperfections, hidden treasures, and to slow down. To practice wabi-sabi means to accept nature’s process, including impermanence. Some of the materials in my paintings include an old scarf, a broken guitar neck without strings and an unattached violin neck. These things could be dismissed as ugly and without value, but wabi-sabi has taught me that we are in a constant state of change, and to value the moment/the now. / Completion Date: 3/2005 / Dimensions: 28”Wx32”H / Media: / Scarf, guitar neck, violin neck / *Certificate of Authenticity / accompanies sale

My thoughts and documentation of this series of work has changed and continues to change as I create new pieces. Keep looking!

Like this design? Vote for me in the Music Machines challenge on RedBubble! The story behind the shirt: / I’ve started playing classical guitar when I was 8 years old. I did many concerts and exams, but I realized after a couple of years that what I really liked was playing popular songs. At 11, I’d take out my sunglasses and play the first notes of Smoke on the water. (Not too cool on a classical guitar, but I had fun.) Then, I got Guitar Hero and when I was able to play on expert, I thought it was time for me to play those songs for real. I got a shiny red electric guitar, which has the power to obscure the shy girl and unleash my inner rock star! Dare to dream :)
