Gaudi’s Barcelona. / A view from the magnificent Parc Guell in Barcelona, looking out across the city to the Mediterranean. A masterpiece of Antoni Gaudi’s mind, a man before his time. This is just a part of this park, it’s not really showing anything in great detail at all, but gives you an impression maybe. It abounds with wonderful mosaic work and fairytale-like structures, really impressive. I flew from Venice to Barcelona, spent exactly 36 hours there, then flew to Rome…an expensive add on to my trip that I could hardly squeeze in timewise…or moneywise! but oh was it so worth it….I knew I couldn’t come home before seeing some of his magnificent architecture and I wasn’t at all disappointed!! / Go see it if you can, read about him if you don’t know about him…fascinating man, exciting unique buildings, real works of art, they abound in Barcelona, it breathes him. / I think you guess that I love his work!! /
Antoni Gaudi’s famous Park Guell, Barcelona.
One of the entrance buildings to this fascinating park created by Antoni Gaudi. It was originally conceived as a housing project, which flopped. It was later given to the city by Gaudi’s patron and is now a great place to see a variety of Gaudi’s / structures.
These are amongst my favourite Gaudi structures. The Park entrance is made up of a number of levels with these covered walkways almost forgotten in the rush to see the more famous structures. My feeling is that the Sagreda Familia has been somewhat compromised by work since Gaudi’s death, but in Park Guell you get to see a real variety of his work as he intended it.
These are some of my favourite Gaudi works. They are naturalistic in form but clearly mathematical. In this age of computers complex forms are almost always rendered in precise smooth forms, but Gaudi is quite happy to use quite rough unfinished stone to produce convincing geometrical forms. And not a broken tile or smashed plate in sight !
This was taken inside Gaudi’s masterpiece the Sagreda Famillia in Barcelona. The exterior is known to most people but the interior is also quite extraordinary, with the supporting columns creating complex shapes. Before visiting I tended to to think of Gaudi’s architecture as overly decorative, but I have admit I was impressed by his use of new geometrical forms which looks as modern today as when he designed them. I often use these photo’s to help stimulate the memory for artworks based on place

Gaudi’s house (and museum) within the famous Parc Guell in Barcelona
Another one of the works of Antoni Gaudi, one of the most eccentric architects of the 20th Century. It was developed and built from 1900 to 1914. This building is part of Parc Guell, a concept park Gaudi set to work on for a colleague in Barcelona. The park ended up failing to attract the visitors it was intended to and was sold to aristocratic higher powers. It is one of a pair of buildings located at the parks entrance gates. The rooftops are decorated in mosaic tiling, in a unique and interesting design, repeated throughout the entire park area. It instantly reminded me of the gingerbread house from Hansel & Gretel. Just makes you want to break off a piece and eat it! This was the very first Gaudi site I visited in Barcelona, which I had waited to get to for many years. The man’s vision must have been so different from that of the world we live in today. He really was a master of his craft. Featured in Statues & Such Canon SX100IS MCN: CAFBC-7223A-CB6A3
