  • Guatemala is heartbreaking for a lot of reasons. Volcanoes, cathedrals and ruins dot the landscape making it both dramatic and nostalgic. This photograph was taken from the ruins of grand old cathedral. To me, this fallen cathedral, which must have been amazing in its day, is a symbol of how Guatemala could be, but isn’t. As I write this, half of the population of this extremelt fertile land suffers from malnutrition and illiteracy is very high. A great many people have pychological scars from the CIA sponsored terrorism during the 1980’s – remember Reagan’s Contra group? Poor Guatemala.

  • These retired school buses buses are everywhere in Guatemala, usually packed to the ceiling with people and livestock. I snapped this one as it overtook us at high speed around a blind corner.

  • I tried to imagine how the the view of this volcano must have been when the cathedral was still new.

  • We drove in to Guatemala, to Tikal, where the Mayan civilisation had 130 000 Mayans in this one area. Known just now is that the civilisation lived from around 700BC to about 650 AD. This is one of the 6 temples and many houses that are round the Grand Plaza. It is 47 m in height and has nine layers, which makes it stand out amongst the rest, but it is not the tallest at the Plaza as one temple is 70 m. The body of the leader Jasaw Chan K’awiil was found inside in a tomb. No one knows how or why the Mayans disappeared but there are many theories. The jaguar is the noted animal for Belize and Guatemala.

  • This is a deep underground limestone cave used by the Mayans during the period from approx 650BC to 600AD)- There were thousand of artefacts in it – only uncovered 4 years ago when the owner of the land found spaces round a rock and moved the rock away – We had to descend a ladder he’d made, through a narrow entrance and walk through each cavern , going downhill most of the way. Each area was all set out with the artefacts he had tried to piece together from that section. In the fourth cavern he discovered two bodies – one of a man lying flat on the ground with his arms crossed but he unfortunately touched him and a lot turned to dust. The body of a woman was in pieces about three feet away. He collected all the bones/ jaws ,complete with teeth etc. The two skulls you see are kind of square. Archaeologista have found out that the Mayans bound the heads of their children to produce this shape!! The Mayans also apparently broke their utensils when they left the cave but this one has 4 completely untouched huge jars in various sections of the cave,. there were also spear heads, jade, shells, pots, dishes jewellery, rolling shaped stones for grinding corn – an utterly unbelievable find.

  • The sun-drenched city of Antigua, Guatemala is a paradise of tropical flowers! Here bougainvillea hangs down over a balcony, sharply contrasted against the delicate fronds of the nearby palms. Taken at the Casa Capuchinas B&B.

  • This curving stairway is almost hidden amidst the lush tropical greenery at the Hotel Panza Verde in Antigua, Guatemala.

  • Visiting the Hotel Panza Verde in Antigua, Guatemala was an adventure in discovering beautiful iron scrollwork, winding down curving staircases, and sniffing the fragrance of roses and tropical flowers in abundance.

  • This is the top section of the Ceiba tree as the shared pic was not big enough to make even a card. The info re the Mayan’s calling this ‘The Holy Tree of Life’ is on the double image. Taken in the Guatemala Biosphere area where the majority of Mayan ruins are.The moss in the canopy gives the branches a fuzzy appearance. Best viewed large.

This doorway in Antigua, Guatemala caught my attention because its style was quite different from anything else I had seen around the town. I strongly remember it being an entrance to a home, but since it was a while ago, my memory is a bit foggy. • In Guatemala there is a city that is famous for its spectacular and elaborate religious festivities during Semana Santa (Holy Week). The city is Antigua and they are famous for their detailed beautiful elaboration of the “carpets tradition” (Alfombras de Acerrin) of flowers that adorn the processional route. Unfortunately I wasn’t present for this wonderful tradition but was present for the first day of celebration of Semana Santa.
