Lately I’ve been drawn to taking photos of old barns and sheds. I think of all the years those building were of great service to their owners. They were once strong and purposeful, housing the animals, supplies and equipment. The joy and pride of the owner of a newly built barn or shed, signifies growth and prosperity. A sign to others, the owner’s hard work and persistence to succeed was achieved. With each landowner that achieved these markers of prosperity, a community grew in strength. As time moved on and growth excelled, the condition of the barns and sheds weakened. The purpose of these buildings was abandoned for lives of ease and speed. Now the barns lye in ruin, covered in vines, the wood rotted and unstable. They sit without need or purpose. Ah, but their purpose is to remind us of what they once were and how they contributed to the future. I appreciate them and enjoy their character with the layers of dried and cracking paint, roofs overly repaired and their frames crippled and falling.
