The sunlight through the petals and leaves looked lovely against the backdrop of the snow outside. Our short days make sunshine seem all the more precious, even indoors. artisandelimage kindly suggested that I crop the line of the wall to the right, as well as a bit off the top. Watercolor and pencil on illustration board, / 10×8 / 2009 Model: Adhara Batul One of the Greek myths I adore the most, for its incredible strength, poetry and significance, is the myth of Persephone. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the goddess of the underworld and of the Spring growth. Daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, she was abducted by Hades and taken to the land of the dead. By a determination of the Fates, she was forced to stay for two seasons each year after eating pomegranates seeds, thus becoming consort of Hades and queen of the underworld. This time I opted by depicting her sorrow and solitude after having the seeds, although there’s quite an air of resignation with her destiny.

Under the sight of the planets, life continues on the wheel of evolution. This is a picture from my day job. The red balls are grass pollen, and the tubes from them are growing down into the flower to fertilise the ovary. To get ready for the photo took some serious effort to get the timing right, then use of chemicals to stain the pollen red, then actually get to the microscope to take the photo. After reading in the forums about the paths people have taken to become artists, and thinking of my desire to be one (as in, to be able to spend all my time on creative pursuits), I began to think about what skills I have already from my current path. My challenge was to find a creative application of those skills, because I’m not in a position to give up work. Yet :) I’ve been using photography to record my work for many years, so that was the first and most obvious answer. I just thought I’d throw that up for interest, as it’s not the sort of thing that you would want framed in your living room I’m sure LOL!

East opens the day at dawn, / Releasing the Sun / From night’s ebony box. / The mind awakes / with childlike delight. / Spring fills the breeze / with sweet flowers and the / shimmery sound of bells. / Here the birds unfurl their wings / and all the world takes flight. Elizabeth Barrette Ostara brings an optimistic energy as we celebrate the beginning of Spring and a turning point as the Northern Hemisphere once again tilts back towards the Sun. Until this tilt takes place, now is the time of balance – equal day and night – yet also a time of anticipation, as from this night forward, the light once again conquers the darkness. I wanted to do an image that symbolizes the Victorian bushfires that started on Saturday the 7th of February 2009, but I didn’t want this image to be sad (although we all know how devastating it has been), I wanted this image to be about the loss, the lives saved, how Australians came together and the growth to come. The Bird symbolizes all the lives that were saved, but this bird has no nest, so it also symbolizes all the homes that were lost and the nothingness some of these people now feel. The Birds claw clinging onto the tree branch is there to symbolize the fire fighters thoughts of hanging in there, and putting all these fires out. The Heart is there to symbolize all the heart ache and love, which us Australians have felt and will never forget. The Flower is there to symbolize all the help, support, donations and everything that us Australians have given to those affected, just to let them know that they have got support, and us Aussies are all here to help. The Music symbols are there to symbolize (all the lives lost) all the spirits flying up into the sky. The Leafs symbolize the growth to come, with rebuilding these affected communities. And I did not want an actual image of a fire in my design, so the swirls of the bird’s tail are there to symbolize the raging fire that affected so many. Any Money made from these images and designs I will be donating to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
