  • 4th in the Gritty City series – self explanatory really. / / Or is it? / / Obviously this piece is a commentary on the lack of compassion exhibited by people standing around and walking by, totally ignoring the girl on the ground. Is she sick? Has she been attacked? It’s hard to know. Journalists often encounter situations where they could (some say should) step in and help, but just shoot instead. Really, that’s usually the best thing they could do – often one person can’t make a difference, but one photograph of the situation can have enormous impact. It’s a hard thing to do – steel yourself against pain to record an event. I don’t know how they do it. / / / Thankfully, that is not the situation here. I don’t think I’d have the stomach to ignore her – in fact I know I wouldn’t. This photo was actually taken on Bridge Day 2007 (same day as my “Bridge Colours” photos). With Sydney Harbour Bridge closed to traffic, all kinds of people were taking the chance to sit down, make out – do all sorts of wacky things on the bridge. This girl just decided to have a little rest – she’s OK. Odd, but OK. / / © Sara Lamond 2007. All rights reserved. / /                 / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • With a little grain and tonal tweaking, this accurately represents the grey claustrophobic gritty urban life of the street corner in central Aberdeen. Got to love cobbled-stone roads… A long exposure taken on the Shen Hao using Ilford Delta-100 film.

  • A walk in Budapest, Hungary.

  • Another image from the Tilba Grocery Store. / I couldn’t resist it’s grungy look, & loved how the paint was peeling from sitting in the sun for so many years. I suspect it’s a fairly old ice-box, but it’s still in use today. I’ve chosen to upload this one today because it’s currently 36C outside & blowing a hot wind that feels like someone opened an oven door….. Bushfire weather. / So I thought something a little cool….. • My husband and I went for a walk in the Old Port of Montreal, not very far from home, last Sunday. We eventually wandered away from the water, and into the neighbouring streets. We found some overpasses with a lot of character. Not only had they interesting graffitis on their posts and walls, but some homeless people had built small shelters within their arches, with whatever materials they could find. I thought that it was sad and fascinating at the same. Sad, because being homeless in a country with winters as cold as we have is a terrible plight. However, I was fascinated to see how resourceful these people might be to improve a bit on their daily lives. Focal length 55mm / ISO-400 / Aperture f/9 / Shutter 1/160 sec. • Most of the time, I would do everything I could to take a photo and omit the power lines. But in Mexico, they are such a part of the atmosphere that it feels necessary to include the in the city shots. This is a scene from the streets of Mérida in the Yucatan state of Mexico.

  • This mansion is a little worn around the edges but still gorgeous. This was either on or near the Paseo Montejo, a 19th century boulevard built to mimic the grand boulevards of Paris. Today it’s lined with a mixture of old stately houses and businesses. The neighboring streets have more of these beauties, often a bit worn by the weather or otherwise stark white – Mérida is known as the “white city” because of these stately buildings.

  • “Night wolves moan / Winter hills are black / Im all alone / Sitting in the back / Of a long white cadillac Train whistle cries / Lost on its own track / I close my eyes / Sitting in the back / Of a long white cadillac Chorus: / Sometimes I blame it on a woman / The one that made my poor heart bleed / Sometimes I blame it on the money / Sometimes I blame it all on me Headlights shine / Highway fades to black / Its my last ride / Sitting in the back / Of a long white cadillac Train whistle cries / Lost on its own track / I close my eyes / I aint never coming back / In a long white cadillac” -“Long White Cadillac”/Dwight Yoakam With lyrics like that I figured this one better be a dirty, gritty, scratched-up black and white photo. This car is WAYYY cooler than any of those tacky Escalades you see out on the road today!

  • Inspired by Tegan and Sara’s song I Hear Noises I am disappointed / Every morning that I wake up / And I am disappointed by the feeling / Of waking up next to you / You call me up, let me know that / That my sick guilt’s / So unwelcome / It’s so unwelcome yeah / I hear noises in the darkness / I hear sadness in your voice / I hear noises in the darkness / I hear sadness inside you / My health is failing me / So I flip on the television / And watch sad movies / And look for sad sick people like me / Call me up, and let me know that / That my sick guilt is so unwelcome / I’m so unwelcome I’m so unwelcome / I hear noises in the darkness / I hear sadness in your voice / I hear noises in the darkness / I hear sadness inside you / You could go / We could go / Through the front door / You coould go / We go in through the front door / We could go / We go in through the front door / We could go / I come in through the front door / Through the front door / And the pills they will not / Will not will not will not let me go / And I will not will not / Will not let you drink yourself alone / Call me up and let me know that / That my sick guilt is so unwelcome / You’re so unwelcome you’re so unwelcome / I hear noises in the darkness / I hear sadness in your voice / I hear noises in the darkness / I hear sadness inside you / I hear noises in the darkness / I hear sadness inside you / I hear sadness inside you
