Snow at the Old Mill of Guilford in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. The Old Mill of Guilford was founded in North Carolina on Beaver Creek in 1767 to grind grain for the early settlers of what is now Guilford County. Today, the mill continues to produce all-natural, stone-ground, whole grain foods.

Early morning light bathes the face of the Miller’s House at Rock Run Grist Mill in Susquehanna State Park, Havre de Grace, Maryland. It is interesting to note that the second story has no windows facing East! This series of pictures was taken in early August several years ago.

The original grist mill was built in 1816 on Beaver Creek (now known as Laurel Creek) by Abraham Erb, Waterloo’s first settler. The grist mill was an important economical and social centre for the region, it helped encourage settlement that eventually grew into the Waterloo we know today. The original grist mill was demolished in 1927, but a replica was built in 1998 on Silver Lake in Waterloo Park. The replica features a timber frame constructed using local materials including 300 year old hand hewn oak, elm, cherry and pine beams as well as a 12 foot water wheel. Years ago, the grist mill was used to grind up grains into flour for the farmers. Being a miller was a very prosperous job and before long the miller would be a very rich man. The best locations for grist mills were either beside a fast-flowing, shallow river or on a waterfall because a year-round flowing water supply was important. Source

A grist mill has existed on or near this site in Wye Mills, Maryland since 1682. The mill along with two other Eastern Shore grist Mills provided wheat, flour and bread to the Continental Army in 1779.

This little mill is in south west Marion county, GA. It is still in operation, but only at certain times. I have bought both cornmeal and grits from this mill, and the owner said we could call him and he would come in and we could watch while they do some grinding. I have watched them do this before and there is nothing better than fresh ground grits…. hummm except maybe chocolate.
