On the road south, this woman loomed larger than life ahead of us, beaming away for several kms. It felt like she was our travelling companion for a short time, and we couldn’t help smiling back! It talks! It dances! it will even sing a Christmas song for you (but you wouldn’t really want)... The Dancing Christmas Bug.
Wilbur is an old, pet, potbelly pig, he belongs to a good friend, he is almost blind, he doesn’t do much getting around, but he is still a friendly little cuss. I walked up and he stood up and grinned for me. Yup, actually grinned! He is a character for sure!!
An illustration from my MAD magazine days.
a grump of blister-bodied Grinners swim past the good natured sea creature… I liked this bit of my larger “Sea Creature” pic, so while I am finishing that, I thought this section might make a cool card. I’ll upload it and see :)
I am occasionally asked how I start the crazy pics :) This is my concept sketch for “Sea Creature” / The good-natured sea creature gazes benignly at the nervous Grinners as they swim past, in their usual backwards style. The poison blisters on the Grinners’ backs were fully inflated, as though they expected trouble. Observers in the underwater viewing deck, were making notes. Temperatures had risen alarmingly in the Nglishoop sea and creatures like the Blister-bodied Grinners were stressed as a result of these changes and their response was to remain in defence mode. This was costing them valuable energy though, as it was usually reserved for short fight or flight occasions. They were aware, in their remarkably evolved brains, that something was not right, but nothing in their evolutionary coding had prepared them for anything like this. These brightly coloured underwater imps, were a critical part of the reef biome and the researchers were worried. Although they were terrestrial beings, the observers knew that their lives were inextricably bound to events that occurred in this underwater world. Time was running out…
You know you want to! / . / / . /

Sue and Jeff are our very best friends. And while some people are dog people and some are cat people, Sue and Jeff are bear people. They even have a sign on their fridge that says “Don’t Feed the Bears!” Of course, people do feed them anyway. Thank God. So it wasn’t surprising that as we were visiting them in their new home in Kent, UK for their house warming party, the conversation eventually turned to bears. That was after my 7th bottle of imported Belgian beer which I think they brew stronger for export… Anyway, I knew that Sue had an amazing collection of bears, some dating back to before I was born (well, at least one of ‘em), so I thought, “Jeeze, wouldn’t it be cool to round them all up for a group picture!” And Sue said, “Well now that you mention it, two of them just got married (NOT of the same parents like Tassie Devils have been known to be…) so it would def be fitting to mark the occasion with a family photo!”. Well, that was all the encouragement I needed. So here’s the final picture… taken the next morning which is why it’s sharp… That’s the happy couple in the center. And what an amazing mixture this family is… / The koala is actually 70 years old, and the guy sitting next to him who looks kind of stiff (oops!) is 50. Hey, the old bastard’s younger than ME!! / One of them snores (as do both Sue & Jeff)… / One comes from Harrods but doesn’t have two pennies to rub together… / One coaches an all bear team of… jeeze, I dunno what they play… will ask Sue tomorrow… / One of them has “issues” about whether or not he’s the father of the little guy in the front… / Two of them spit, and three of them say very naughty things to girls. / Oh, and the cute guy ayt the top with the eye patch works for the BBC!! So there you have it. The most amazing bear family, possibly in the world. And they are all Sue’s. Bless her. I’m off to bed now. Seems I snore a bit myself…

“One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. Which road do I take? she asked. Where do you want to go? was his response. I don’t know, Alice answered. Then, said the cat, it doesn’t matter.” / -Lewis Carroll, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” Second artwork in my new series based off of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. This is the my take on the Cheshire Cat, who though a smiling and logical entity, is also a bit unnerving. I chose to portray the cat as something a bit unsettling and ambiguous. “’But I don’t want to go among mad people,’ Alice remarked. / ‘Oh, you can’t help that,’ said the Cat. ‘We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.’ / ‘How do you know I’m mad?’ said Alice. / ‘You must be,” said the Cat. ‘or you wouldn’t have come here.’” The original artwork measures 12.5×19”, and was created with mostly colored pencils and art pens and markers on burgundy Canson paper.
