Arlington West is an ongoing display of the casualties in Iraq on East Beach in Santa Barbara, to protest against the war in Iraq, and increase the public awareness regarding the military and political fallout of staying there. Each Sunday morning thousands of crosses, as the number of the fallen, for that day, are placed in the sand and volunteers are providing the public with up to the moment information on casualties plus individual stories on the fallen. Mark, an American soldier, gave his life for his fellow countrymen in the war in Iraq. The only one of his unit to survive the initial blast, he battled for life as he was flown back to the United States for medical care. His family flocked to his side and surrounded him with love in his final hours. Not long after his arrival in America, he died on home soil in the arms of his loved ones. His mother Kim, my husband’s first cousin, wrote this poem, “Is it you?” as she struggled with grief and loneliness for her young son. She asked me if I had a dragonfly photo to accompany her poem which relates the tale of the dragonflies that seem to hover near her in a show of consolation. This image is our collaboration, our joint effort, in memory of Mark Graham who defended the cause of freedom with steadfast determination and a valiant heart. May he rest in peace and may the angels surround him and his family now and forever. (100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation; see another image, “Is it you?” in this portfolio if you’d like a green dragonfly. It will print better in the card size). Taken from the Mark W. This beautiful flower is a gift to Flipteez, one of the members of our group, the healing journey who recently lost her mother and is appreciative of all the support she has received from the redbubble community. Although we all go through the grief cycle when a loved one passes away, there is a time to let go that has been expressed in many literary forms. The book Grieve Not is one example, a poem left by a British Soldier killed by an IRA landmine in 1989. It is apparently his adaptation of a poem written by Mary Frye in 1932. It is spoken from beyond the grave, and offers an extended consolation based on the idea that the dead have continuous life in nature’s various manifestations-the wind, rain, snow, flowers, trees, stars, and so on. / “Do not stand at my grave and weep. / I am not there, / I do not sleep. / I am the thousand winds that blow. / I am the diamond glints on snow. / I am the sunlight on ripened grain. / I am gentle autumnal rain. / When you waken in the morning hush, / I am the soft uplifting rush / of quiet birds in circled flight / I am the soft stars that shine at night. / Do not stand at my grave and cry. / I am not there / I did not die.”

Original is, cast-iron statue of Aboriginal woman on rock; at Colebrook Reconciliation Park on Shepherds Hill Road, Eden Hills, Sth Australia. It is part of a tribute monument (31 May 1998), on the site of the original Colebrook Home for Aboriginal Children 1943-1972, commissioned by Colebrook Tji Tji Tjuta Dreaming Committee, with assistance from the Blackwood Reconciliation Group. [I have applied texture and tonal effects to my original photograph, for emphasis and effect.]

A bit of a story with this one… bear with me as I tell the tale…. Indian Myna birds mate for life. We’ve been watching this bird & it’s mate living in our garden for the past month. Myna’s are considered pests in Australia, but they’ve been no concern to us, & they’ve become noisy but welcome guests at our home. / Early this morning my 2 yr old son approached me very distressed, taking me by the hand & leading me to our back fence, where he showed me one of the Myna birds stuck in the fence. It had caught it’s leg between the palings & being unable to free itself, had unfortunately died overnight. / Under the watchful eye of my son, I removed the bird, & began to wrap it with the intention of putting it in the bin. / This made my son quite distressed & left me with a small dilemma… Do I casually dispose of the dead bird & continue my day, or do I attempt to explain death to a 2 yr old in the face of his first experience of it? / I took a deep breath & chose the latter option… albeit an abridged version of death. / Instead of throwing the bird in the bin, i asked my son if he wanted to bury it instead. He had no idea what burial was, but somehow understood that this was a nicer option for the bird. / So, spade in hand, we dug a decent hole, placed the bird in, my son waved goodbye, then we covered the bird…. burial complete, & my son content . Which brings me to the bird in this image. As I previously mentioned, this is the mate of the dead bird. For the whole time that we were burying it’s mate, this bird stood on the ground 10 feet from me & watched the entire process. / Upon completion of the burial, this bird flew to the place on the fence where it’s mate died, & spent the rest of the morning sitting there alone, calling mournfully. A sad & sorrowful sound, I can assure you. / I was able to snap this photo during it’s grieving vigil. SOLD

First Memorial Day after my cousin was killed in Iraq when the helicopter he was riding in (on his way to the air base to come home for leave) was shot down. / First Leave his buddy had after returning himself. I took this picture very hurridly…it felt like I was doing something wrong…intruding on his grief even thought it was a perfect outward display of the grief I had inside me. It was such a private moment, how dare I thrust myslef into it? However, it was a powerful moment. I wanted to remember how he honored Dan, how he felt, how it made me hurt, how it made me proud, how it made me feel a little closer to my cousin. / I’m glad I took the shot. It isn’t the best color, angle, or framing, but it’s one of the most important shots I’ve ever taken. / It will always remind me…and him…of that sorrow.
