This is a type of atmospheric halo, shot during the early afternoon almost directly overhead. There were no clouds, just airliner contrails. The dark colors were created by high contrast in photo software. 300 mm lens.

This was taken at Swansea, Newcastle NSW, Australia. The water around this place is absolutley amazing – the most beautiful blues I have ever seen…unfortunately not so good for capturing in IR…but I managed to get the sky to turn out like the colour of the water. Honestly, that’s the colour of the water. / / / / / / / / / / /

It was at about this moment that the snow started to come down in earnest and we feared we wouldn’t make it down the perilous road. Well, in a controlled manner that is… I’m sure we’d have made it down if we let gravity, near zero visibility, slippery white substance under wheels and hands trembling erraticly on the steering wheel have their way… sobs
