The We’re a bit different in Australia calendar features the travel photography of Australian journalist and photographer, Darren Stones. “G’day folks. The We’re a bit different in Australia calendar features humourous images of places and people I’ve encountered on my travels. Weddin Mountains National Park is situated on 8,361 hectares 390kms west of Sydney and 19kms south west of the township of Grenfell / This striking crescent of cliffs and ridged gullies is reputed to be a bushrangers’ haunt Ben Hall cave is named for one of the area’s most infamous rogues. / Weddin Mountains National Park was gazetted as a Wildlife Reserve in 1962 and a National Park in 1970. As Lyster Holland wrote, in an excellent publication for the Young Historical Society: ‘The southern side consists of a series of large and small valleys with rugged spurs between them. All the water sheds travel south and some of these valleys wind their way through the mountain to the northern summit with their floors carpeted in mountain grass, beautiful ferns and wild flowers. Some thirty different varieties of orchids have been identified, tall iron and stringy barks and giant gums spread an evergreen umbrella overhead and in some valleys, sheer sandstone cliffs rise from the valleys up hundreds of feet.’ / Certainly a place worthy of a visit. A farmers dam catching the sunset near Grenfell NSW Australia
In the Weddin Mountains National Park 19kms south west of the township of Grenfell / Seaton’s Farm is a fine example of bush ingenuity and life in the middle of the last century and a fascinating part of the park. / The farm began with a small house built from local materials in 1939 near Basin’s Gully by the Seaton family, the ruins of which can still be seen. / The buildings were all constructed using timber from the property and second hand corrugated iron, beaten flat to cover a larger area. The Seatons grew their own vegetables and killed their own meat, running up to 100 sheep, chickens and pigs on the property. Practically self-sufficient, Jim Seaton supplemented their existence with work on various stations and farms in the area. / Worthy of a visit there.

Came across this gathering near a sheep carcase near Grenfell NSW Australia. I think the crows are a little worried about the odd one out, an Australian Wedge Tailed Eagle.
The naked earth is warm with Spring, / And with green grass and bursting trees / Leans to the sun’s gaze glorying, / And quivers in the sunny breeze; And life is colour and warmth and light, / And a striving evermore for these; / And he is dead who will not fight; / And who dies fighting has increase. The fighting man shall from the sun / Take warmth, and life from the glowing earth; / Speed with the light-foot winds to run, / And with the trees to newer birth; / And find, when fighting shall be done, / Great rest, and fullness after dearth. Poem written Julian Grenfell, Into Battle, April, 1915 Julian Grenfell, the son of Lord Desborough, was born in 1888.
