  • The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a bear native to the Arctic Ocean and its surrounding seas. The world’s largest predator found on land, an adult male weighs around 400–680 kg (880–1,500 lb). The polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species, with 5 of the 19 polar bear subpopulations in decline. For decades, unrestricted hunting raised international concern for the future of the species; populations have rebounded after controls and quotas began to take effect. For thousands of years, the polar bear has been a key figure in the material, spiritual, and cultural life of Arctic indigenous peoples, and the hunting of polar bears remains important in their cultures. / / The IUCN now lists global warming as the most significant threat to the polar bear, primarily because the melting of its sea ice habitat reduces its ability to find sufficient food. The IUCN states, “If climatic trends continue polar bears may become extirpated from most of their range within 100 years.” On May 14, 2008, the United States Department of the Interior listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. • “The light of the sun, the moon, and the stars shines bright: The melody of love swells forth, / and the rhythm of love’s detachment beats the time. / Day and night, the chorus of music fills the heavens; / and Kabir says / “My Beloved One gleams like the lightning flash in the sky…. There the whole sky is filled with sound, / and there that music is made without fingers and without strings; / There the game of pleasure and pain does not cease. / Kabir says: / “If you merge your life in the Ocean of Life, / you will find your life in the Supreme Land of Bliss.” ~ Excerpts of Poetry by Kabir Christmas Day on Maui / Hawaiian Islands Featured in the Safe Haven group 31 December 2008 Featured in Hawai’i ~ Aloha Na’au group 31 December 2008 Featured in _Your Magic Place 29 December 2008 Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi / Shooting Date/Time 25 December 2008 19:36:06 / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/500 / Av( Aperture Value ) 16 / ISO Speed 100 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved

  • Loch Etive is at the end of Glen Etive (Scottish Gaelic: Gleann Eite), a glen in the Highlands of Scotland. The River Etive rises on the peaks surrounding Rannoch Moor, with several tributary streams coming together at the Kings House Hotel, an old inn on the A82 road at the head of Glen Coe. From the Kings House, the Etive flows for about 18 km, reaching the sea at the sea loch of Loch Etive. At the north end of Glen Etive lie the two mountains known as the shepherds of Etive: Buachaille Etive Mòr and Buachaille Etive Beag. • Dunsapie Loch lies within Holyrood Park in Edinburgh. Holyrood Park (also called Queen’s Park, and formerly King’s Park) is a royal park in central Edinburgh, Scotland. It has an array of hills, lochs, glens, ridges, basalt cliffs, and patches of whin (gorse) within its 650-acre area. The park is associated with the royal palace of Holyroodhouse, and was formerly a 12th-century royal hunting estate, although it is now publicly accessible. Arthur’s Seat, the highest point in Edinburgh, is at the centre of the park, with the cliffs of Salisbury Crags to the west. There are three lochs; St Margaret’s Loch, Dunsapie Loch, and Duddingston Loch. The ruined St Anthony’s Chapel stands above St Margaret’s Loch. Queen’s Drive is the main route through the Park. Holyrood Park is located to the south-east of the Old Town, at the edge of the city centre. Abbeyhill is to the north, and Duddingston village to the east. • The Scottish Parliament is the devolved national, unicameral legislature of Scotland, located in the Holyrood area of the capital Edinburgh. The Parliament, informally referred to as “Holyrood”, is a democratically elected body comprising 129 members known as Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs). Members are elected for four-year terms under the mixed member proportional representation system. The original Parliament of Scotland (or “Estates of Scotland”) was the national legislature of the independent Kingdom of Scotland, and existed from the early 13th century until the Kingdom of Scotland merged with the Kingdom of England under the Acts of Union 1707 to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. As a consequence, the Parliament of Scotland merged with the Parliament of England to form the Parliament of Great Britain, which sat at Westminster in London. Following a referendum in 1997 in which the Scottish people gave their consent, the current Parliament was established by the Scotland Act 1998, which sets out its powers as a devolved legislature. The Act delineates the legislative competence of the Parliament – the areas in which it can make laws – by explicitly specifying powers that are “reserved” to the Parliament of the United Kingdom: all matters that are not explicitly reserved are automatically the responsibility of the Scottish Parliament. The UK Parliament retains the ability to amend the terms of reference of the Scottish Parliament, / and can extend or reduce the areas in which it can make laws. The first meeting of the new Parliament took place on 12 May 1999. If you would like to buy a card, print or poster just go to ‘buy/preview’

  • I came across these two shells on the lonely beach. It’s so unusual to find such intact shells and it was so perfect on the desolate beach this day, I thought this was the perfect time to catch a memory of a beautiful day. I set the white balance on shade so I could get a warm color to the photo. The sand here is snow white normally. I used my 50mm lense, 100 iso and 7 apeture for a shallow depth of field.

  • This shell was broken but I think it still has beauty. Shot this at Pensacola Beach about 7 am. I love the beach at this time of day, there was no one around and it was such a perfect day! Used my Canon Rebel XSI and the kit lens 18-55mm.

  • We arrived at 7 am and it was another beautiful quiet morning on Pensacola Beach. Taken with my Rebel XSi and 50mm lens, ISO set on 100 and Apeture 7 for a bit of shallow depth.

  • Ho’okipa is quite famous as one of the wind surfing capitols of the world. It is here you will also the beautiful Honu feeding nearby and Hawaiian Monk Seals occasionally basking in the sun. If you do see them, please maintain a good safe distance as these beautiful creatures are endangered and are protected. On a bright sunny day with good clear atmospheric conditions, the ocean on this side of the island is a glorious aquamarine blue. I also enjoy watching and photographing the sunsets from Ho’okipa in summer as the sun is setting over West Maui and Kahakuloa. During winter the sun is setting on the opposite side of the island over Kaho’olawe. In winter you may also see the magnificent Humpback Whales from Ho’okipa, that is always a thrill. There are strong currents and rip tides here in this channel so if you plan on swimming I do hope you are experienced. And of course there is a long bench of coral reef called a Papa and many volcanic lava rocks, some smooth and some quite sharp, so you must know where you going to enter the water. Here in this area along Maui’s beautiful North Shore the ocean is clean and clear and absolutely delicious. I much prefer to swim in the tide pools on the opposite end of the beach. It is much safer there. I only need to remember to wear shoes as there are many sea urchins. • Ho’okipa Beach is world renowned as one of the international surfing capitals of the world. It is here you may see professionals from many countries around the world as well as many talented locals competing and enjoying this wonderful watersport. With a slight adjustment in Curves, I reset the White Balance to reveal the brilliant cloudless blue sky and a slight adjustment in Contrast. No Saturation. This is true colour on a bright and shiny summer day here on the island.
